Yes, he’s experienced.

Jimi Hendrix has been proclaimed the “Greatest Guitarist of All Time” by a panel of musicians wrangled by Rolling Stone Magazine.

I’ve heard him several times as Hot Tuna Acoustic. I think he rates up there. The story goes, Clapton was asked “what’s it like to be the world’s greatest guitarist?” And he answered, “Dunno. You’d have to ask Jorma!”

All these lists, top ten movies, guitarists, rock oboist, Celtic drummer, are more intended for entertainment and generating buzz than any sort of objective measure.

How can you really compare Hendrix, Clapton, Jeff Baxter, and Segovia?

>> I guess if it isn’t rock ‘n roll and its not amped, I doesn’t count.<<

You’ve got it! Django, Doc Watson, Charlie Byrd and Andres Segovia never even existed!

(Nor did Charlie Christian, Les Paul, Chet Atkins, Kenny Burrell and Wes Montgomery — even though legend has it that they all used amps!)

Our son used to play off the Hendrix blues album. Some god licks on there and singable tunes. Hendrix music overall was not my style, but his rank seems to be the majority opinion and that’s among many guitar players.

I’ve Been playing for over 40 years. Rating who’s best is subjective, apples and oranges. Hendrix spent 3 months in studio perfecting the guitar break in his version of Dylan’s All Along the Watch Tower. If you catch some of of his live performances of this song and some others, they are not even close to being as captivating in most cases, and in some cases they are less than impressive to me as a player.

There are hundreds of guitarist who nobody knows their names who are much better than Hendrix, but they are not original. Jimmi was one of the first, and as an originator rather than an imitator, he is rated where he is. You do have to give him some points for that.

George Harrison, on the other hand was never too flashy, but it seemed that he had the knack of putting the right notes in the right places at the right time, although I do not consider him at the very top either.

The whole idea of a list determining who is the best is sort of like a Nobel prize. You get some who deserve it but then you get your “Gores” and “Arafats”. Maybe not the best comparison, eah? But you get the idea. It’s all subjective to the judges.

Here’s two of them that weren’t mentioned: John McLaughlin (of Mahavishnu Orchestra) and the late Roy Buchanan.

Can you support the 3 claims (I’m not a musician, I will never ask Metheny the question, his answer is Hendrix) you make? What is your evidence?

Nobody is going to say “I’m the best.” But I’m just sayin’, I heard all three, live, two of them more than once. To me there was no comparison.

Frank Zappa could imitate them all and make it social commentary to boot.

Good call. The album with Chet Atkins and Mark Knopfler is one of my favorites.
