Newt is being a realist. He also said that there are millions in the US that would have to go.
Better realize that as a country the immigration and border enforcement crisis goes back many years and over numerous administrations of both parties. He is taking a rational approach of separating those who have been productive and set roots with lifestyles that are compatible with our values as Americans over years from those who come to abuse our system, or worse, commit crimes.
Gingrich is not taking the bait of those (including some on Free Republic) who are just dying to reinforce the false myth that Republicans are racists and separatists. He is creating opportunities for rational alliances with many Latins who want to and may vote Republican. We can win and make real progress, and not throw away our chances to win Florida, which for sure we will lose if he throws meaningless, unrealistic red meat for some to lose the support of many others.
Newt has more brains than most on practical approaches to solving very serious problems and I support him.
Anybody who believes that all we need is to elect a president who promises to come in and simply round up 10 - 15 million people, verify their status and ship them out and we go back to the good old days just like that, needs to think. It ain’t gonna happen like that. Now, if you recognize that the Spanish-speaking people have for the most part a great family culture, are excellent workers and are strong church-goers, you see that there are many points of commonality with maintstream conservatives. Guess what, they detest Obama, too. They detest the failure to defend the border, too. They hate crime, too. They hate the low-lifes, too. They know that when a person with a Spanish-sounding name is arrested for a crime, there are millions of Anglos ready to paint the entire community with the same, bigoted brush. Like it or not, some of the people on this forum do that, too. Think before you judge Newt on this. He is taking the smart path.
But we want purity here at FR, which we never get anyway, and what we're going to end up with is Obama for 4 more years and COMPLETE amnesty. We're a clever sort, aren't we?

The “realistic” view is the Arizona example. Enforce the laws, require employers to check their citizenship, the illegals will deport themselves.
My great-grand parents all came here legally as well. Believe me, I know what you’re saying. I have felt the same way.
I guess I’ve just had to step back and realize that yeah, what they did was probably stupid in trying to get here but their dignity as human beings trumps my feelings that they took a lot of our resources away. If they are criminals-deport them, if they have done nothing but work hard-make them go through all the immigration stuff and then accept them, while tightening up the border.
Oh yeah, he is. I forgot about him though, haha. I refuse to vote for any illegal lover, so that narrows it down to 3 for me. A sad state of affairs when a majority of the REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES support a Democrat position.
I’m Hispanic. My grandparents immigrated to the U.S., thus resulting in me. Not all Latinos are automaatically pro-illegal.

Well FUNG. I live in the belly of the beast of this immigration crap in SW Texas and I am sick to death of what it is doing to our state and country. The money is incalculable into the billions a year just for Texas. I have probably 20-25 natural born hispanic Americans and they are all to the last one against path to citizenship, amnesty or what ever they want to call it.

I asked you not too long ago to provide a link. Cain came out in favor of Arizona’s immigration law tonight. Probably was his best statement.
I have an easier one, CUT OFF THE F'ING $$$$ these ILLEGALS are getting from us tax payers. Not a weening, cut it off country wide with an immediate effective date. The tide on the border will turn overnight. They are here because our Government has become entirely too generous with our treasury while they get dry and grow some roots.
Let’s be realistic here on a few points:
1. Newt has essentially the same position as all but Bachmann. Even Palin, if she were running, has said the same things, more or less.
2. As much as some Freepers drool over the idea of busloads of guys in sambreros handcuffed in a flatbed truck driving south on I-35, it’s just not going to happen.
3. Selective deportation, employer enforcement, and cutting off the goodies will work better than any attempts at “round ‘em up and ship ‘em out” ever could.
4. Outside the conservative movement, ideas like #2 and #3 won’t sell with the public at large.
The bigger problem is nobody has kept their promise to seal the borders and enforce immigration law. Not Reagan, not Bush 41, not Clinton, not Bush 43, not Obama. Not Rick Perry. Arizona and Gov Brewer have come close, and I think more laws like that are needed. These and similar other state laws support deportation at large either, just the ability to ask the question if someone is “caught”.
Wanna get a feel for Newt’s position, or any of the others? Get specifics on how they feel about the AZ law.
In reality, this will hurt Newt just enough to help someone who is slicker, and prettier, but worse overall on the issues than he is. Mitt Romney. Unless Cain can hold on.

Illegal Labor is the Feds out for preserving the status quo regarding Taxes and Regulation. Interestingly, that is WHY the Feds encourage in-state tuition etc for illegals under-the-table -their presence providing disposable labor allows Federal, State and local regulatory and tax excess in the status quo to continue
Immigration is the ultimate litmus test as to the candidates in question commitment to meaningful regulatory and tax reform. If they are wishy-washy on the subject...they have no real intent to disturb the DC status quo...
Real ”leadership” is that which will place Flyover Country’s interest ahead of the Feds....haven’t yet seen anything meaningful anywhere from anybody to indicate that might happen. We have just one more election cycle to make that happen via rule of law. Otherwise its the end of the run for America.

Speaker Gingrich may be able to walk this back and minimize the damage by forcefully demanding a substantial fine be assessed against the illegal aliens that broke our laws long ago but have maintained decades-long family and community roots without a criminal record. There must be some tangible penalty for breaking the law and to avoid deportation, otherwise, how is this not amnesty?
The Gingrich campaign has stepped up to a cliff and may have gone over the edge in the eyes of a huge block of conservative base GOP voters with his position on illegal immigration revealed in tonight's debate.
Illegal immigration is such a hot button issue that directly bears on the survival of our nation's culture, prosperity, and security. I know it certainly caused me to switch the standing of Gingrich versus Cain in my preference.
