Rasmussen poll shows Gingrich with double-digit lead in Iowa

Rasmussen’s latest poll in Iowa gives Newt Gingrich a big claim to legitimacy in the Republican nomination fight, but it also is pretty good news for Mitt Romney as well. Among likely caucus-goers, Gingrich now leads Romney 32/19, with Herman Cain dropping more than half of his previous support:

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Likely Iowa Republican caucus-goers shows Gingrich with 32% followed by former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney at 19%. Georgia businessman Herman Cain, who led in Iowa last month, drops to third with 13% of the vote. Texas Congressman Ron Paul draws 10% of the vote in Iowa, while Texas Governor Rick Perry and Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann each grab six percent (6%).

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum draws support from five percent (5%) of caucus-goers while former Utah Governor Jon Huntsman picks up two percent (2%). Only one percent (1%) would prefer some other candidate and six percent (6%) more are undecided.

This is the first primary survey conducted entirely after last week’s GOP debate on foreign policy. Cain also recently fumbled a response to the administration’s actions in Libya.

This comes from a sample of 700 respondents, which is larger than the Bloomberg survey released this week showing a four-way tie in Iowa. This survey took place more recently than the Bloomberg poll as well, incorporating the Saturday debate on foreign policy, in which Cain struggled. As far as the Ron Paul surge Bloomberg noted, it seems to have bypassed Rasmussen’s sample. In fact, while Paul continues to hold onto about 10% of the caucus goers in Iowa, he’s not likely to get much more:

Imagine that - a GOP candidate who openly favors ethanol subsidies has a big lead in Iowa. Shocking.

Gingrich or Romney? Are these two ethanol-panderers really the best the GOP is able to offer America as we slide into the financial abyss? The Tea Party movement has done great work, but the 2012 GOP field shows how much is yet to be done - whether in the current GOP or in a new third party, we need fiscal conservatives with the requisite communication skills and charisma positioned for presidential runs.

I think Cain has cost himself too much support with his responses to legitimate questions from the news media over the past two weeks. More and more, it appears that those incidents were not just isolated ones, but part of a pretty consistent pattern. He just doesn’t seem to have the horses to be President. I hope I’m wrong, and he recovers, but I doubt he will.

Gingrich bothers me, even though he’d be good in a debate, but he really has bounced all over the lot ideologically over the years. I really don’t see a lot of difference between Gingrich and Romney, to be honest. Both would probably sign onto the global warming agenda, or would have a year ago...a bad sign.

I guess for now I hope Perry manages to recover. If Cain continues to fade, and Gingrich starts to fade, those votes will probably slide over to Perry as next alternative, and he could start to recover.

Absent that happening, maybe a “Draft Paul Ryan” movement?

I would also add, that Gingrich is not new to the majority of us and his slow but steady rise is the result of us knowing fully, who and what he is, his past is quite well known, but most of us are beyond that.

what we know is what Gingrich has clearly displayed in the debates, as well as his strong participation and activity in his campaign. He is knocking on doors, shaking hands and connecting with people.

More importantly, he displays the strongest ability of how to handle that 3 am call on the crisis hot line, and he certainly knows how to handle the Middle East and China.

Few other candidates are even remotely in his class or have the logical ability to handle the very difficult job ahead. Any candidate who has to rely on other people (experts) in order to make the right decisions has no business even being close to the White House in the coming years.

Christians will be held accountable for staying home by God in this election just as much as they were for pulling the lever for the Won in 2008. There is no copping out as He expects us to show a kind of resolve and courage that is not demonstrated by the world. As a body we still need to go to the polls and still vote for Senators/Congressman who can make a difference. You can always write in the POTUS candidate or leave it blank. The days of moral equivalence spoiled crybaby wimpdom are over.

A decent question. Read where one of Perry’s fundraisers said that he is still raising money for Perry because even if he doesn’t win the nomination, he will have politcal power.... Weird. People must have millions to light a match to when they can pay for not winning, but for power and positioning?

It’s obvious Rita, Newt is steady and solid. His rise is not based on emotional hype. It’s based on his strong ability and vast knowledge. Most of us would rather have someone like him at the helm than another trainee who promises to hire people who will do his job for him, or teach him what to do. (Tried that already, didn’t work)

About ninety local Republicans squeeze into a small meeting room in the back corner of the Greene County Community Center. Supposedly every chair in the building has been hauled in, and late arrivals have to stand against the wall or in the doorway.

“[Gingrich]’s been a college professor, an author and a politician,” John Meyer, co-chair of the Greene County GOP, says before adding, almost off-handedly: “And he’s the leading candidate for the Republican party’s nomination for president.”

The audience greets this with cheers and a standing ovation. Even the usually unflappable Gingrich seems a bit surprised by the assertion—leading candidate for president? The former speaker of the House quickly regains his composure. The look of disbelief morphs into a smile as he approaches the podium.

“That’s the first time anybody, anywhere has introduced me as the leading candidate,” Gingrich says to laughter.

I wonder where that guy is who told Gingrich, months ago in Iowa: “Why don’t you get out of the race before you embarass yourself anymore?” I haven’t seen that guy in news clips lately.
