Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes said that a good catch phrase could stop thinking for 50 years. One of the often-repeated catch phrases of our time -- "It's the economy, stupid!" -- has already stopped thinking in some quarters for a couple of decades.
There is no question that the state of the economy can affect elections. But there is also no iron law that all elections will be decided by the state of the economy.
President Franklin D. Roosevelt was re-elected for an unprecedented third term after two terms in which unemployment was in double digits for eight consecutive years.
We may lament the number of people who are unemployed or who are on food stamps today. But those who give the Obama administration credit for coming to their rescue when they didn't have a job are likely to greatly outnumber those who blame the administration for their not having a job in the first place.

Since mittens fails the purity test, name one that meets it. Herman thinks Cuban is a language and he is the closest thing to a conservative albeit he does not know what a pro-life position is. Newt has no ground game and will have his adultery vetted all over the place. Michelle is my choice but not exactly getting traction. Santorum is tractionless too only worse. Perry won’t take the marbles out of his mouth and will hack sawed in a debate. I am not seeing a solution here.
Yes, they will.
At this point I'm ready to declare for Newt (despite long held antipathy) and pray for some sort of ground swell that might knock the old boys' club off the throne.
Otherwise, we're screwed.
Herman Cain is still in the race. Most people see past the smoke and mirrors of the talking heads.
The only ones I know of who support Romney are the talk show hosts Hugh Hewitt and Michael Medved. I know of no rank-and-file Republican who supports him.
Ann Coulter thinks the sun rises and sets with Milt.
What are we supposed to do? First I liked michelle Bachmann and then she lost my support when she attacked Rick perry like crazy. Then I was in the Bandwagon for Rick perry thinking that, he will be able to articulate his conservative policies from Texas. But, by now we all know that, Obama will clean him in the debate.
Then, I was very excited of Herman Cain and then I was even with thim till the so called sex scandal but lately I have to stop because of his lack of knowledge with foreign policy. So, now I look at Newt and there comes Fannie mae story.
Hope, something will happen between now and Iowa to get some conservative candidate.
What about Rick Sanatorum? Why are we ignoring him? He is strong pro life, family value conservative guy from an important state. He has been in various congressional committees with good experience. All the signs point out to a flip of PA in 2012 and we should may be think about him. Atleast, he will not have lot of hidden issues
If I remember correctly, only last spring she was saying that if Romney were nominated, he would lose.
Well, she’s once again changed her tune.Coulter worship at FR gives her a pass every time though.
The “establishment” can pick whomever they will. What matters will be whom we the voters pick.
I’m with Cain. Let’s just see what happens when people actually start marking ballots.
Boy would it surprise them if Cain wins Iowa. If he does...and I know he can...it would be even greater to go on and sweep New Hampshire and South Carolina.
Should we be blessed to see that happen, I can hardly wait to see the MSM and other pundits and the “establishment” sputtering around trying to explain it to us all.
The Republican Establishment has already picked Romney. Now it is up to the primaries to ratify the choice or reject it. I think Romney will be the Democrats’ Republican candidate as McCain was and possibly Dole.
There are other Romneys out there waiting their turns.
He is not my choice, but he is 10,000 times better than the commie. But, I know we all have to prefer Obama over Romney if he gets the nomination. We all have to stay home if he gets it or vote for some 3rd party (very effective).
See tagline.
The wind kicks up a little breeze around a candidate and people flee based on inaccurate, biased reporting, lies, slander, rumors, innuendos.....
Rick Sanatorum, nice guy, but not a leader in comparison to those you have quickly dismissed.
We need backbone transplants in our Party, not cowards to the sound bites playing around you.
The Left applauds themselves for work well done.
>>>Republican nominee, Romney, will lose to Obama thanks to the rich, the poor, union workers and the media. America hyper inflates away what little wealth remains after 100 years of progressive, Keynesian economic policies and millions of baby-boomers die poor, miserable deaths.<<<
That’s how it looks if you use current trends to make reasonable predictions.
The problem is that the impact of hyperinflation, or the continuing Marxist interregnum, the impending deaths of millions... all of these things would spin off into unpredictable directions. In fact, that kind of unpredictability is actually more frightening than your prediction, which is pretty damn bad.
My best guess is that some places will weather the storm, and some places will be hellholes. I just hope I’m in one of those places that rides out the disaster... assuming, of course, that such a place exists.
God help us.
