Herman Cain would loosen federal marijuana restrictions

At a campaign stop in Urbandale, Iowa, Tuesday, Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain said he supports letting states establish their own laws regarding medical marijuana. "If states want to legalize medical marijuana, I think that's a state's right," Cain said, according to NBC News. "Because one of my overriding approaches to looking at all of these issue --most of them belong at the state, because when you do something federally . . . you try to force one-size-fits-all." The federal government restricts consumption of marijuana under current law, but 16 states and the District of Columbia have passed measures to allow use of the drug in some form, causing friction between federal and state authorities. Despite support in years past from President Obama for reforming federal marijuana laws, the Drug Enforcement Agency continues to raid dispensaries that operate where marijuana use is legal on the state level. A Gallup Poll conducted in October found that half of the population supports legalizing the drug. Cain's fellow GOP presidential candidates Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Texas Gov. Rick Perry have also voiced support for allowing state and local discretion

Are you saying the states don’t have to abide by the Bill of Rights?

I heartily disagree.

The legal status of Marijuana borders on insanity. 41% of Americans have tried it, yet users clog the justice system. It falls into the same class as heroine, yet is less addictive than coffee.

We know prohibition fails, yet we still fund an entire agency just to implement those policies. Policies that (applied to alcohol) proved to increase crime, and burdens society by creating an entire class of criminals who live normal lives.

I agree 100%, definitely a state issue. We have been fighting and losing the war on drugs for 50 years. Time to end it.

About six months ago, George Will (whom I despise) said there are only three people who could be taking the oath of office in January 2013: Obama, Romney, or Huntsman. As much as it hurts to admit, I think he was right (and we can safely cross Huntsman off that list). Sigh. How did this happen again?

What am I missing?

Don't tread on me.

Anything *I* do shouldn't infringe on your rights to Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.

Anything *you* do shouldn't infringe on my rights to the same.

Alcohol and tobacco are both legal drugs. Both of those do FAR more “infringing” on both the users and on others, causing physical, psychological, social, and financial harm to persons, families, innocent bystanders, and taxpayers.

I really, really, don't see why Conservatives have such a hard time with marijuana, and especially for medicinal use.

Do I personally condone it? Absolutely not. I don't smoke or drink alcohol or do any kind of drugs, nor do I condone any of it. But I think it is entirely hypocritical for the U.S. to legalize alcohol and tobacco, but not marijuana. And I think it's incorrect for Conservatives to be against something IF — IF — IF it doesn't infringe on anyone else’s rights.

"Roe v Wade trampled all over states rights."

This bears repeating - Roe is such a flawed decision not only because it legalized abortion, but because it makes a mockery of the 10th Amendment:

"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people."

The only issue I have with marijuana right now is that many people die getting that product to the streets of America. It has blood all over it. If it were legalized and the border with Mexico were closed to traffickers, it would be a different story. Medical is entirely different and should be an issue for the States are Cain, Paul and Perry suggest.

"Herman Cain does not believe the Federal government should meddle in issues which he thinks belongs to the states, and I think he is correct."

Ditto.

I suggest you go back and actually read the Bill of Rights. There is not a word in it that constrains the actions of citizens - its entire purpose was to restrain the power of the federal government, lest it become tyranical.

They need to be loosened.

I have never used marijuana myself and I think anybody who does is making a foolish decision.

I wish it would go away, but it won't.

But extending the War on Drugs to include marijuana makes no sense. It is no more addictive than nicotine or alcohol and the jails are full of people snagged on pot offenses.

The WORST thing about the “drug war” is the insidious erosion of our civil rights under this policy.

Everytime you see a car pulled over to the side of the road and a bunch of cops dumping their possessions on the side of the road over a small amount of marijuana OR SUSPICION of the same - REMEMBER. It could be YOU.

If you are ticked off by having to shread all your personal records before disposing of them, its because some idiot judge somewhere decided your own garbage isn't you're personal property because of a drug bust some narc was trying to make.

Every time you read about a bunch of paramilitary types breaking into the WRONG house, ripping somebody’s home part, killing their dogs and terrorizing their family over a mistaken drug bust tip, remember - it could be YOU next.

Drug abuse is generally a medical problem, unless it involves a vehicle, machinery or sale to kids. But we have made it a big business for law enforcement, the courts, etc. by our well-intentioned, but defective laws on drug abuse, most particularly marijuana.

If we COULD, I would rather take all the druggies and dump them on a tropical island somewhere with all the poppy seeds they want as long as they stay there. But that is not possible and would lead to the kind of abuses I outlined above

You went full retard on your first post. Looks like you aren't slowing down any either.

It isn't so much as being "pro-pot", but pro-Constitution which limits the power exercised by the Republic.

But you knew that. You just can't defend your pro-extra-Constitutional FedGov power by reasonable means, so you toss out the old doper line.

Talking about imbecilic... Don't be the Poster Child.

“It is ironic that the 0bama appointed U.S. Attorneys in California are closing down the pot shops”

Not so sure about that as the 5th “store” within walking distance from my house just opened up last week.

My point was that there are some laws like murder, treason, shouting fire in a crowded theatre are national laws, and they should be. If abortion is murder, I think it should be included, and banned everywhere. Murder is against the will of God, and as people distance themselves from Him and His commandments, the country has lost so many of it’s earlier blessings.

Besides it being an outrageous capital offense on innocent beings, just think of the millions who will not be working, paying taxes, supporting social security, inventing wonderful new ways to do things, if not for the horrible waste of [precious life.
