Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that he strongly supports a federal mandate requiring citizens to buy health insurance a position that has been rejected by many Republicans, including several who likely will be running against him for the Republican presidential nomination.
Appearing on NBCs Meet the Press, Gingrich told host David Gregory that he continues to advocate for a plan he first called for in the early 1990s as a Congressman, which requires every uninsured citizen to purchase or acquire health insurance.

I am aware of no federal government mandate that requires everyone who resides in this country to purchase automobile insurance or pay a penalty tax to the I.R.S. Newt’s analogy is not a good one.
“Find it odd when Cain was it you had no problem helping smear him”
That is a flat out lie. I have never smeared Herman Cain or any other Republican candidate. In fact I like a lot about Hermans candidacy.
The video is the real John McManus. Does he ever HATE Gingrich! Listening to that video for news is the same as those getting their news from John Stewart. It’s a hit piece.
What, does critical thinking bother you? I’m nowhere close to “getting down to Obama.” I would gladly support Santorum or Cain. If Paul or Bachmann somehow got the nomination, I’d vote for them with reservations.
There's likely not a single candidate in the field who will beat Obama. You are delusional if you think Cain would. He lacks a fundamental command of the issues. He's also needlessly gifted the Dems with fantastic "anti-woman" ad material for the general election which could destroy all hope of GOP congressional majority as a hedge against Obama.
The John Birch Society?
The video did not say Newt was responsible for the birth of the Department of Education. It did however say he had one vote out of 416 votes.
How many other videos did McManus make to castigate the other 209 Congressmen who voted for the Department of Education?
Cato, I used to have democrat friends who were critical thinkers. We do not have a single democrat that we socialize or even deal with if we know of a business that they own.
Relationship with my son’s family is strained and we see them far less than in the past. (libs). If Herman Cain can stay married to a democrat for 43 years, I’d have to question his judgement based on that alone. If your man is the last man standing though, I’ll support him. (unless it’s Obama).
I agree.
A better argument/discussion would be the mandates on hospitals to treat patients that show up in emergency rooms. You will never see a candidate discuss that one because it's a popular give-away with (usually) hidden costs.
Hit piece or not, Newt did give birth to the Federal Department of Education, sat with Peolis on Global Warming and Carbon footprint, favor Romobamacare, among many other liberal moves. I’ve never liked or trusted Gingrich, and I still don’t.
You brought up another one of Newt's faults. He's flip-flopped about a number of things.
The Many Egregious Flip-flops of Newt Gingrich .
Which Newt would be president?
You can’t figure that out? Amazing how few people know how to draw the threads together to make a final product anymore! So I’ll do it for you.
Congress had to be sold on the idea, and guess who the salesman was? He didn’t only cast one vote for it. He lobbied all the votes for the Department of Education! And there went education in America!
No wonder we are nearly a full fledged Communist country now! The brainwashed are allowed to vote!
Everybody has their favorite. No problem there.
But way to many not only have their favorite, but deem every other candidate entirely unacceptable, and feel it is their mission to destroy the other candidates by any means necessary.
That is what gave us McCain in 2008. And it could well give us Romney in 2012.
“...I used to have democrat friends who were critical thinkers. We do not have a single democrat that we socialize or even deal with if we know of a business that they own....”
Damn, you sound like ME...!! Haha!
I lost “friends” over political ideology as well - mainly over the queer issue. Some people I knew had no problem with the homo agenda being taught in the public schools (where their kids went) versus having kids in parochial school (like mine). The one that comes to mind was a conversation over dinner at the other folks house, and they asked why I was spending the money for parochial school, so I flat out told them “Because I don’t want my kids to ever think that queers’ behavior is normal.”
Well...let me tell you, that was throwing a turd in the punchbowl, to be sure...
Another factor was the issue of firearms. I taught my kids at an early age (5 and 6) how to shoot, how to safely handle firearms, etc.
I don’t speak with those folks anymore, nor do I socialize with them.
And my in-laws are idiot dems as well, which, as I’m sure you know, can and does cause problems with the spouse...
The crap never ends, does it...
This is exactly what I've been thinking almost from the beginning. The GOP has a group of uninspiring and perhaps even unqualified candidates all wanting us to elect him/her as our nations next President. I have become so disheartened and in some cases disgusted with our choices on the right side of the aisle.
I was supporting first Palin and then Bachmann but as they were taken out I said okay, let's see, I might be able to get behind Cain even though he was far from my ideal candidate but at least he was palatable. But now? Newt, sorry I can't stomach this all over the road RINO. Sorry but I can no longer believe much anything he is says anymore. Sure he is the smartest guy in the room but one I dare not trust with my dog.
One thing is for certain, I will vote but it will not be for the Demoncrat that's for sure and at this rate it won't be for any of the lackluster, uninspired and non-talented Republican candidates remaining. If Sarah doesn't get back in then I'll be saying hello third party candidates I'm now looking at you all. You ain't got a chance of winning but at least my conscience will be clear.
I think he may have done that all by himself.
how about reigning in the lawyers ??? most CON-gress things are lawyers ??? wait, what???
Excuse me - I NEVER participated in any smear of Herman Cain.
It’s not the “mandated purchase” per see that is the problem. We have many places where we have to buy things — car insurance and a driver’s license and cars that meet specific standards in order to drive, for example (might well be the only example — that’s not a good way to start an argument now, is it....)
The problem here is the requirement to buy something that has nothing to do with a government service you wish to use, and for which the government has no compelling reason or “protection of other people’s rights” interest. With car insurance, you don’t have to drive on the taxpayer roads, and insurance is so that if you harm other people or their property, those people can be made whole.
Health insurance is only for yourself, and is only “needed” because government refuses to let people die if they get sick, and since government likes giving our money away but also likes to pretend otherwise, government is trying to force us to buy insurance simply to save the government money.
Of course, if the government had simply increased the medicare payroll tax by 5%, and then offered people a 5% tax credit if they purchased acceptable insurance, the plan would look just like hundreds of other “tax cuts” that too many conservatives seem to like way too much.
We are just fortunate the democrats were too scared to pass a tax increase. Because they had the votes, probably wouldn’t have lost any more seats than they did anyway, and there’d be NO constitutional question because the SC has long since decided that government is free to tax people and then give that money away to people for doing what government wants.
To show how ingrained THAT philosophy is, look at Cain’s 9-9-9 plan. He has a 9% income tax. But if you and your fellow citizens lobby your local government and make them do what Cain thinks would be best, you can get designated an “entitlement zone” (or whatever he calls it these days) and get 6% of that 9% rebated back to you. And so many people just love that idea — because what Cain wants to force you to do is something they think is good.
