NEW ORLEANS Chaka Khan is more than angry.
Instead of getting to rest before her show at the Louisiana Superdome, the R&B star has been booked for two speaking engagements. Shes holed up in her hotel suite, fuming. Outside, her assistants are waiting for her to open the door.
Her makeup artist, Derrick Rutledge, is waiting, too. He just flew in to do her after working on Michelle Obama in the East Wing. After New Orleans, hes scheduled to fly out to do Oprah Winfrey before returning home to Washington.
But first Rutledge has to persuade Khan to open the door. Finally, after 15 minutes, she does, and Rutledge distracts her by talking about two of her favorite subjects: tennis and shopping.
Within 30 minutes, Khan emerges, reddish mane flowing, lips sensuous in burgundy, looking glorious in a lace dress and carrying a hand fan.
It wasnt a good day, Khan later admits. I was nervous about speaking, but he calms me. He knows what to say to me.
Rutledge has worked for Khan for 15 years. He knows what his client and close friend needs: a hug and some orange juice. Im more than just makeup, he says. Im there for support as well.
Rutledge is the man behind the look of some of the worlds most famous names. A leading makeup artist, he gets as much as $15,000 for a days work and boasts a coveted client list, including two of the nations most photographed faces, Michelle Obama and Oprah, as well as singers such as Patti LaBelle, Shirley Caesar and CeCe Winans. Just last month, his work was on the covers of Essence and AARP, which featured Obama, and O, which featured, obviously, Oprah.

Isnt she wearing the colors of the African National Movement Red Green and yellow?
You do see some interesting people there, that’s for sure.
That one is image #750, which is on page 653 of the People of Walmart website.
I had a dickens of a time finding it today...
She definitely needs to go to charm school!
Who taught her how to stand, Dick Butkus?
Most of what she wears is so outrageously ugly. The dress would have been fine but then you have the tablecloth effect running down the front. Unreal.
Michelle is wearing a pretty dress this time.
.
She’s wearing couch covers again.
And why is that rag hanging down on her right side, is she trying to hide whatever is in the square box shown underneath the silver dress posted in an earlier photo?
Did she have hip surgery?
Maybe or someone ran out of thread while hemming her dress.
Then there's the "legs apart" deal. Now what culture does that come from...Klingon?
Photos can be retouched, airbrushed, and manipulated to make someone look slimmer.
You need to look at regular photos rather than staged shoots. 25 or so ago, I saw Linda Evans in person and you wouldn’t give her a second look if you saw her on the street.
What is she wearing? And what is hanging down the back of her dress?
I saw a side view of her wearing the grey off the shoulder dress.....omg.
Caboose augmentation...
WTH is that?
From the Vacation Gal FR series.
Well it seems too high for a camel thingy!
That get-up in post #43 isn’t a dress, it looks like they just wrapped material around her. It has absolutely no shape or style. She probably wasted $15,000 for that too. What does she care when money is no object?
Her boob belt fell???
