Cain defamation lawyer hired to monitor accusations (It's Go Time!)

Herman Cain, who is seeking the Republican presidential nomination, has hired a high-profile defamation lawyer to keep an eye on the sexual harassment accusations made public by two women this week.

Atlanta attorney Lin Wood told Reuters Thursday he was not hired to scare, intimidate or threaten anyone from making statements, but to monitor the accusations against Cain and respond accordingly.

Wood, a top libel and defamation lawyer, was hired on Monday morning when it became clear that Sharon Bialek was about to become the first of four women alleging inappropriate behavior by Cain to go public with her accusations.

"I would certainly at some point and time give him my legal evaluation of whether any of these particular statements are potentially actionable," Wood said. "But I was not hired to run out and file a lawsuit against anybody."

The two public accusers -- Bialek and Karen Kraushaar -- are planning to hold a joint news conference, but it has not been scheduled. They have accused Cain of inappropriate behavior in the late 1990s when he was head of the National Restaurant Association.

Cain doesn’t have much in the way of positions (he doesn’t know enough to have them, except in the most general of ways).

I don’t care what color Cain is, but as far as I can see, he’s the only one who has played the race card, complaining that he was being “targeted” because he was black. Do you seriously think the Dems wouldn’t have seized on a white GOP candidate with a verifiable paper trail like Cain’s?

He knew about this and he should have been ready for it, but instead he started out by lying (even though Politico had informed him almost 3 weeks earlier that they were going to run this story and had asked him for his comments) and then had to do the Clinton bit-by-bit acknowledgement.

And now, like Clinton, he’s going for the “best defense is a good offense.” He has never explained the details of the first, verified charges, his wife (with whom he was not living at the time, because she did not accompany him to DC) has not supported him, and he is revealing that, like Obama, he has no knowledge and only superficial ideas, and he thinks it’s all about him.

You really are out for blood, aren’t you? Why would he take a week off to take care of his personal problems when he is not guilty of anything? You seem to be of the mind-set that says “I don’t care if he’s not guilty, he should be a man and ‘fess up anyway.” Do you hate him for his gender, his conservative views, his race, what?

Who do you support, anyway?

Generally, you don’t waste money on a high-priced, big name defamation lawyer if you’re guilty. And generally, if you’re making things up against someone who just hired a high-priced, big name defamation lawyer, you might want to come clean.

I'm also hearing the accusers are backing out of their joint press conference.

Yep, I read they've decided not to hold their joint press conference for now. LOL!

Then I heard on the news this afternoon that an attorney (maybe Bennet again?) said two of the so-called anonymous accusers will not be coming forward. (I think that means they don't exist.)

Then I read a statement from that Donna lunch lady who complained that Herman's behavior made her uncomfortable and he stuck her with a $400 wine tab (LOL!). Now she's claiming, paraphrasing "I am NOT an accuser! I never claimed that Herman Cain did anything inappropriate!"

I wonder what "they" are going to try to do to Herman next, and if it will come from the left or the right. I'm sure glad Herman has Lin Wood watching out for him now.

I approve of the way Herman Cain has been spending my money. He's a good steward of his campaign donations. Lin Wood will be worth every penny the campaign pays him, and more.

He is paying for Wood personally.

Seriously? I had not heard that.

This is an assumption! If you do not like Herman Cain - say so. But, you can not rant about an assumption! If this $800 bill was true, then this woman needs to provide proof of it.

I’m sure she didn’t have $800 in her wallet and had to put it on a credit card. I call this false! I bet the women ordered the 2 bottles themselves thinking they could get away with stiffing him with the bill and he slapped them down.

You can make up any story you want and spin it to your liking! I say stop spinning what has not been proven!

Fortunately, I think the Joe Paterno scandal has taken Cain off the front burner. The Paterno scandal-now THAT’s something to talk about. A real scandal vs. a fake .

I think it’s a smart move, what I would do if someone accused me of something I didn’t do, take it for awhile and then start fighting back.
It wouldn’t be to intimidate but to protect myself against any unfounded accusations.

You REALLY, REALLY hit the nail on the head here. And I'm speaking from personal experience. There is only so much sh*t you can take and defend against on your own until you have to hire someone to protect your rights and good name.

The more I hear about these "complainants" the more they do not sound like real victims, either. As it stands, and I wasn't there of course, but it's looking like the odds are that Cain is the victim of a slime campaign.

Sad that all of this scandal is taking away from the bigger picture like Fast and Furious! Oh right - we can’t have anything against Democrats in the papers.

I think I’m losing it!

I call bullshit on this. That's what I like about him, he doesn't pull the racecard and he could because he's fa>r blacker than Obama. You are SO out of arguments. GOP dies and the People win.

It doesn't matter who he supports. Cain is doing his candidate and the GOP a huge favor by fighting back. If Cain folds under baseless attacks, his candidate will be next. The democrats will not let up because someone decides the fight isn't worth it and surrenders. They invented the politics of personal destruction.

To paraphrase the line from the Terminator:

You still don't get it, do you? They'll destroy the Republican! That's what they do! That's ALL they do! You can't stop them! They'll wade through you, reach down the GOPs throat and pull their freakin' hearts out!

He has never explained the details of the first, verified charges

What "verified" charges?

his wife (with whom he was not living at the time, because she did not accompany him to DC) has not supported him,

Do you have proof of your assertion that they were separated? Not that this would prove he harassed anyone, but I'm wondering where that statement comes from.

Libs heads EXPLODING from coast to coast.

Not really. More like libs delighted as the story drags on and on. A lawsuit won't be settled before any election, but every deposition, every motion, every adjustment to the legal team and every hearing will bring the whole thing into the headlines again. If Cain is suing, he'll never put this behind him while it matters. Cain wins the case? Who cares? The damage is done.

Palin didn't lawyer up when accused of all those things she was. How did that work out?

Oh, yeah, they kept after her until she backed out of the limelight, then attacked for a while longer to make sure she stayed out.
