Business Insider: Herman Cain Was The Luckiest Guy In America Last Night
Business Insider ^ | 11/10/2011 | Grace Wyler

Herman Cain's presidential campaign had basically been left for dead when the 2012 Republican presidential candidates took the debate stage in Michigan Wednesday. Sexual harassment accusations had plagued his campaign for nearly two weeks, and his deny-to-the-death strategy was not going as planned.

But divine providence stepped in on Cain's behalf tonight, in the form of Rick Perry. The Texas Governor's spectacular meltdown on stage at the debate did what many in the media had believed impossible — divert the spotlight away from the Cain affair and on to the embarrassing shortcomings of a lower-tier candidate, as reporters gleefully hopped off the Cain Train to start writing Perry campaign obits.

Even Cain's reference to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi as "Princess Nancy" — a poor choice considering the circumstances — could detract from the morbid fascination with Perry's epic collapse. By the end of the debate, it was clear that the video of Perry forgetting the name of one of the federal agencies he wants to get rid of — and desperately looking to Ron Paul for help — is going to dominate the news cycle for the next 48 hours or so. That's just long enough for everyone to forget what Cain may or may not have done at the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s.

People were already starting to lose interest in the Cain sexual harassment story, even before tonight's debate. Republican voters don't seem too concerned with the allegations — if anything, support for Cain appears to have coalesced around what many conservatives see as a liberal political hit job to destroy Cain's campaign. The debate audience almost chased CNBC moderator Maria Bartiromo offstage tonight when she so much as mentioned Cain's character.

It doesn’t matter, and the BI is right.

All those things you point out are true - Cain’s innocent. However, the charge attached and as long as there was nothing else to feed the news cycle, that was going to be the story.

On November 3 another story came out on Obama’s gay advances on Harvard Review staff and others at another gig in the late 80’s and 90’s. There is WAY more there, and since the press didn’t do their job last time around the story is probably going to attach somewhat, especially if D insiders want to take Obama down.

Perry spaced and killed himself on national TV. It doesn’t happen every day and while running for office is hard, doing the job is even harder. The press is now on Perry like Clinton on an intern, or on Huma in case your confused which Clinton I’m referring to in the simile.

Perry’s now the news, and that’s the way it happened. It’s why an aspirin factory got bombed during the Lewinski scandal.

Cain is still up in the polls, not because he’s got better ideas, but because he’s NOT ROMNEY. Nobody trusts Romney, and nothing is going to change that. I like the answer Romney gave on the housing mess to Bartiromo though. Ballsy.

Gingrich, to me as a conservative, is unelectable for a lot of different reasons. I think he represents the old GOP, and as far as the old GOP goes, they might as well replace the elephant on the logo with a donkey. Karl Rove is dead as far as being a legitimate conservative voice goes. One of the knives in Cain’s back is Rove’s.

As for Cain, the very weak reed I cling to is that of all the people running, I think Cain could pick the best cabinet. That counts for a great deal. I think if Cain got in there he’d try to run the place like a business, at least to start. It’s a total assumption based on his success running Godfather’s Pizza, but that’s no mean feat.

Pizza is one of the toughest businesses in the economy to run because of the low barriers to entry, the low margins, the high head count, and the high cost of marketing.

He did it. You can’t do it without picking good people to run it for you. Not something that big.

It’s a damn weak field. I really wished that governor down in MS would have run, name slips my mind, ironically.

Anyway, the political discourse is agreeing with you. Perry’s gaffe, however, was better news because it was significant, unforced, and unequivocal. The air has been leaking out of the Cain story for a few days now, and starting actually to backfire. As such, it’ll be there for the general election for any opportunist that wants to wink, nudge, and suggest that Cain’s a groper.

Doesn’t matter whether its true. It made the paper, so there must be something to it, and even though that’s dead wrong, that’s how the mouthbreathers that vote will see it.

Grant also suffered from migraine headaches that caused him to confine himself to his tent. Reporters just assumed he was drunk/hungover.

The left is only miffed that Cain had denegrated Nancy from the status of Queen!

The fact is that the media have painted a very weak portrait of Cain. I have seen many people go from very tenative about Cain to 100% supportive of him after simply LEARNING about him.

For starters:

Commentaries:

Issues:

Also see http://www.hermancain.com/the-issues

For an outstanding discussion of 999 see:

Bio:

He also has 3 or 4 books on Amazon right now, and hundreds of speeches on Youtube.

Here is the speech that made most people sit up and take notice of him on the national stage:

I actually think he’s even better than then...

I'm not a Cain supporter but have been defending him over at C4P...and viciously attacked for doing so.

There's a group that continues to believe the women despite they have no proof/witnesses and some have a history of filing false harassment allegations. That Atlanta/CBS article about the “lying software” was quite interesting and has a 95% accuracy rate.

Add Bill Curtis’ comments that Bialeck had a “history” while at CBS/Chicago.

Yet these C4P simply refuse to acknowledge the above and now attack cain for calling Pelosi “Princess”. To top it off, some have said my posts are offensive to them. So stating factual reality is offensive now? Good grief!!!

I've long been a strong Palin supporter (even before she was picked for VP), but these Cain attackers either are feminazis that hate all men and will support women even when they are scamming an innocent man. Or they are racists that inherently reject a Conservative black American.

I think there are some deep seated issues there - and I’m not sure where they stem from. I wonder if there isn’t some very deep seated distrust of men?

I can relate in a way, if you’d asked me 20 years ago if I believed Cain, I might have had a lot of hesitation because of a pretty bad experience I had. My husband was extremely patient with me as I had to work through my trust issues.

I KNOW men of character and integrity exist now, because I am married to one. All men are NOT cheaters, flirts, womanizers.

And the Perry backers were telling us Cain wasn’t serious and could never win. Now look at their guy.

Thanks for the reply and links. I’ll try to post ‘em at C4P...if they haven’t banned me. :-)

Quick story to reinforce your comments...

I lost my wife (literally the girl next door) to breast cancer at 28. Raising 2 daughters aged 1 and 4 (or they raised me) was not easy yet provided some of the happiest moments of my life.

I never re-married but seemed to find many women who pretended to be Christian, conservative and faithful - yet they all cheated to varying degrees.

I remain hopeful of finding a new Miss Right but I’m now going forward with eyes wide open.

Thanks again, JSNM.

If it was the same article I saw yesterday on FR, it was a VERY poorly written satire ...so bad I had to read it again to discern that the author was straining to make some sort of satirical parallel to the current allegations being made against Mr Cain. It was not funny; and, frankly I have to wonder if it wasn't something put out there as a “dirty trick” by the Left so unsuspecting Conservatives would quote it and then be discredited. (No offense intended towards you or anyone else here; like I said; it was being taken seriously by many on the thread; and it nearly fooled me ...someone even posted that the article was not tagged as "satire" as it should have been.)

The governor of Mississippi you were alluding to is Haley Barbour ...hope I spelled the Governor's name correctly!

“President Lincoln flatly stated,...”

as I recall...he stated “send me barrels of whatever General Grant is drinking that I may send it on for the rest of my command”!!!

Not the first place I’ve seen or heard about Obama’s exploits. I know Larry Sinclair is floating around out there somewhere.

The Penn State story started out as a rumor. In fact, in April a local sportscaster wrote a story about it which earned him not a little bit of enmity. Now he’s ‘scary’ in how ‘prescient’ he was about what Sandusky was up to and about how all of this would go down.

The Cain thing was obviously manufactured. I guess stuff like this is how you know you’re the front runner.

Thanks for the name. Barbour. He did wonders with that state, quietly, after Katrina.

I’d like to see Richard Shelby appointed as Secretary of State if a GOP candidate wins in 2012.
