Why Rick Perry's Brain Freeze Matters
By W. James Antle, III on 11.9.11 @ 10:49PM
Everybody has at some point lost their train of thought. I've set out to make multiple points on television and forgotten one, or forgotten if I had run through them all, before myself. So on one level, Rick Perry's inability to remember the third federal agency he would eliminate is simply part of being human.
Unfortunately, it also seems to be a big part of what it means to be candidate Rick Perry. There are small debate gaffes that seem to sum up what's wrong with an entire campaign -- Bob Dole's "Democrat wars" line in 1976, George Bush looking at his watch in 1992, Al Gore sighing prissily and behaving like a lunatic in 2000. This is one of them.

Paging Anita Perry... Please pick up your husband at the campaign exit lounge.
Isn’t there a reverse mortgage company out there looking for a spokesmodel with good hair?

Yep, this nation cannot survive another Texican that can’t string words together. If you thought GWB was bad, and I did from the get go, as my posts will attest, then this guy is pure poison, I mean with the directions on the heel he couldn’t.
Nice try. Yeah, us older voters, who have been around a bit, are laughing also. Laughing at this illegal lovin’ kid ricarrdo perrynista being so GD dumb he forgets his own states best point. Energy!!
Agreed. Perry needs to bow out now.
Some people are good one on one, and some are good as public speakers....Perry looks to be the former, just like G W Bush was....which makes it difficult for him to garner a large following. Plus, he is from Texas, and his accent is like Bush’s....too many similarities.
Rick Perry was Lt. Governor of Texas when GW Bush was one of those “get the hell out of the way” governors.
I agree, though I don't support him. It is known that when "three" of anything is presented as a question the first two will always come to mind quickly but the third hangs most people up...they have to think and often get it wrong.
Example...
What are the top three cola beverages? ...and there are three. I venture all would be fast to say Coke and Pepsi...but what of the third?
Same with Phone companies....Utilities...Retail Stores...Soap Detergents...Car Manufacturers....and the list goes on
Always the first two can come to mind relatively quickly...the third...never comes as fast.
I can see it now...
Producer: Alright, from the top. Take 27, go!
Perry: Hi, I'm Rick...um Perry.......aw damn!
I assure you, Perry wasn’t laughing inside, nor was he laughing after he left the stage.
I doubt Perry was laughing when he said, “I stepped in it.”
As you say the 'idiot electorate' vote us into corruption.
That is just scary...we cant have that in a debate against Obama...the press would destroy him and paint him as 5 times the dunce the painted Bush......That's the bottom line. We are going up with an exceedingly powerful campaigner in Barak Obama. Not that he's particularly bright (Newt will shred him if he gets the chance) but he is smooth and is extremely well integrated with the DNC spin machine and the MSM... the ENTIRE MSM. They love him and he works well with him.
To put Rick Perry up against all that... it would be unconscionable.
I like Rick Perry, but the future of our country is at stake and I refuse to risk it on his absolute inability to communicate.
We need a communicator.
Newt is one. Cain is another. My personal preference right now is Newt.
Your analogy is flawed.
First of all, I (or Perry, for that matter) didn’t suggest abolishing three of the cola brands, phones, utilities, Retail stores, detergents, car manufacturers.
Furthermore, you’re taking Antle’s article out of context. The author also wrote:
“Perry has bombed every debate since he entered the race. He has generally seemed uniformed and uninterested in matters of substance. His forgetfulness was the only memorable thing about his entire performance. Fairly or not, it has raised questions about his intellect. Perry has also raised questions about his two biggest assets: his conservatism relative to Mitt Romney and his electablity relative to all the non-Romney candidates. Perry’s slip symbolizes both problems. It is hard to imagine him successfully debating President Obama. And what conservative can’t come up with considerably more than three agencies he would like to abolish?”
Producer: Alright, from the top. Take 27, go!
Perry: Hi, I'm Rick...um Perry.......aw damn!
Windflier - you never disappoint. That was funny. Another good post to add your collection.
The only problem with your post #30 is that ENERGY is Perry’s NUMBER ONE ISSUE!
And that’s the department he forgot.
Like I said, anyone else... no big deal.
But for a serial debate-loser... it’s killer. I’m not ready to say “end of the road”... but things are definitely heading in that direction.
There is something wrong with him.
Some sort of chemical imbalance involving neurotransmitters. Hopefully it is not being caused by anything more serious than stress and burn-out. He needs to get physically checked out.
This is of a piece with the over-animated gesturing we saw before.
Maybe the particular pain-killers he has been prescribed for his back surgery have over-taxed his nervous system.
I’ve watched every Bush presidential debate. When it comes to debating, Perry is not like Bush.
You could hear contributors slapping their faces all the way back in Austin.
