Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.
The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.
But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.
One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

Hey I think this is huge news and I think this story should be in “Breaking News”. Just my opinion.
Good. Mcqueary is still there though.
It was coming. You can’t finish your season with the people in place.
Why didn’t the witness call the cops instead of going to Paterno?
This will be like a death in my family. Rural PA took much of their identity from JoePa and Penn State. They always held their heads up because they might be never-graduated coal miners but they were also Penn State.
A sad day for Penn State - but it pales in comparison to the lives of the children who will continue to suffer.
I’m not a college football fan so I don’t know anything about these people. All I know is that if the allegations are true it means Paterno has his priorities all messed up and needed to be fired.
And yet, McPussy is still going to stay? I get the feeling the Penn State student body won’t let him near the stadium.
Same question could be asked of Paterno
I feel bad for the players, especially the seniors. This is not how they want their last season to end.
I know it does not begin to measure up to what those young boys went through, but it has to be tough on them just the same.
Why didn’t the parents of those young boys go to the cops?
I wonder if the cheering supporters will still be outside of Paternos house tonight???
This had to be done. I like Paterno, but he failed to live up to his own code by not reporting what he knew to the police.
And, why didn’t he stop the sodomite?
one of the reporters just asked “are you aware students are rioting downtown right now because of your decision?”
a lot of angry reporters and a lot of support still for JoePa...
Students are saying they are going to “burn the town down”.
Will wait to see what happens. Hopefully all remains peaceful.
It’s tough on everybody.
Why didnt the parents of those young boys go to the cops?
I have many questions about the whole mess...something is fundamentaly wrong.
