Penn State trustees fire football coach Joe Paterno and PSU president Spanier

Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.

The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.

But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.

One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

I don't like using wikipedia as a source, but this time it's accurate.

NCAA Death Penalty

It was made famous from the SMU scandal in the 80's.

The thing is, shutting down SMU’s football program had little to no impact on the Dallas economy.....shutting down PSU’s football program will be absolutely devastating to the local economy there.

Can someone tell me EXACTLY what Mike McQueary told Paterno.
NOT what people think he said, I want verbatim.

I just heard a report that McQueary DID NOT tell Paterno that he saw Sandusky raping a boy in the ass. McQueary was vague and used expressions like he was “fondling” the boy and some other “horsing around” was going on. That was EXACTLY what Paterno told the AD and the others up the chain.

Needless to say, Jerry Sandusky naked in a shower with a young boy at night, should set off the mother of all alarms. I’m just wondering why McQueary told investigators he saw a rape, but told Paterno he saw fondling and horsing around. WTF?

Well dear, in case you hadn’t noticed, I had a few other detractors to reply to on this thread... And actually, I already addressed your point in a previous post to another person (NewinTexas, I think). I’m so sorry that you weren’t on top of my list. Do you need a cookie?

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act
This is where the you-know-what may hit the fan. If this act is enforced by the feds (coming soon) then, yes, all the PSU hierarchy, including Paterno, may be criminally charged.

Yes, good point.

ABC News came out with this today: The U.S. Department of Education is launching an investigation into whether Penn State University officials mishandled the sexual abuse allegations that have rocked the university and are forcing out football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier. Officials are checking to see if the university failed to comply with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the Clery Act), which requires colleges to disclose reported criminal offenses on campus. "If these allegations of sexual abuse are true, then this is a horrible tragedy for those young boys," Education Secretary Arne Duncan said in a news release. "If it turns out that some people at the school knew of the abuse and did nothing or covered it up, that makes it even worse. Schools and school officials have a legal and moral responsibility to protect children and young people from violence and abuse."

The burden of proof for job firings isn’t reasonable doubt, or even preponderance of the evidence.

“Sandusky has been free on bail for at least a day now.

Morbid this is, but it wouldn’t surprise me if he did something drastic.”

Likely a LOT of people in Happy Valley hoping he eats a bullet, VERY SOON...

This obviously runs a WHOLE LOT DEEPER than just what we are seeing, likely with payoffs, favors etc., not too mention others who may be involved in like behavior.

one of the reporters just asked “are you aware students are rioting downtown right now because of your decision?”

a lot of angry reporters and a lot of support still for JoePa...

It just boggles my mind. Heads rolled in the Penn State administration but fans and Paterno expected that he would be able to gracefully retire at season's end. It just proves that if you're perceived as a "winner", you can expect deference reserved for a demi-god as a right.

Pederast refers to an adult who has relations with a post pubescent minor.

Pedophile refers to an adult who has sexual relations with a prepubescent minor.

Both are horrible, but the latter is likely to cause a more severe level of damage than the former.

It would take a retard not to know the difference between the two if one were to participate in a thread on this topic.

Victims that are now known range to boys as young as seven. A seven year old is not going to have entered puberty yet.

Outside of NAMBLA activists and those who desire to gradually erode age of consent laws, the term Pederasty is not generally used in the US. Pretty much the only people who are aware of the term pederast are people involved on one side or the other in opposing or sustaining age of consent laws. The division is usually used to minimise the damage to young people by older sexual predators by creating a division that pretends the sprouting of that first pubic hair means the young person is physically mentally, and emotionally ready to enter into sexual participation.

You just personally did refer to Sandusky as a pederast, which is a false reference and which attempts to minimize the gravity of what he has done, and thus the gravity of the cover up.

Here is your post

Incredibly devastating. Even Ohio State being shut down would have a measurable effect on the metro Columbus (pop. 1.9 million) economy. Think of the same thing in a town of 45,000. It would literally have a staggering impact on employment in the region and destroy a number of businesses.

Nice to see someone else "gets it". Homosexuals corrupt EVERYTHING, but they are protected. WTF!

Ah! Found it. See post 275. So tell me why are the PSU folk getting far worse punishments than most other mandated reporters? And why so quickly?

“...the fact that their parents did little for a decade doesn’t seem to mean anything to anyone here, either.”

You truly are ill informed. The parent in 1998 reported this and obtained a taped admission that Sandusky had been inappropriate with a child. The case ultimately went nowhere despite this. Additionally, the charity he used to lure the kids to him served many kids from broken homes where there was little parental involvement. So lack of parenting was understood. Keep trying to find someone else to blame besides the most powerful man at PSU.

Face it, all you care about is your mediocre football program and it’s soulless coach.

EVERY janitor in the past decade at PSU was individually listed? And you read that report in one day? Impressive! Prove that and I’ll hand over the title to the old beater.. I still need my truck, LOL

What seems to be glaringly absent here, and I think it reflects on the judgment of Penn State’s trustees, is that Mike McQueary was not fired even though he was the sole individual who had the standing and chance to call the police to report the (alleged until proven) rape while it was in progress.
