Penn State trustees fire football coach Joe Paterno and PSU president Spanier

Penn State trustees fired football coach Joe Paterno and university president Graham Spanier (SPAN-yer) amid the growing furor over how the school handled sex abuse allegations against an assistant coach.

The massive shakeup Wednesday night came hours after Paterno announced that he planned to retire at the end of his 46th season.

But the outcry following the arrest of former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky on molestation charges proved too much for the board to ignore.

One key question has been why Paterno and other top school officials didn't go to police in 2002 after being told a graduate assistant saw Sandusky assaulting a boy in a school shower...

A guy rumored to replace him as coach up and leaves in middle age and what...Paterno never knew why?

His story is that he asked Sandusky to consider whether he(S) wanted to devote his time to Second Mile or what was really important(College footsball). Paterna was either totally oblivious to what was going on or was in fact a key part of the cover-up which allow Sandusky to retire (with privileges).

I report - You decide.

True, and the guy who actually COMMITTED the act should get one heck of a punishment... But few here are talking about him. They're lashing out at an entire university, an entire sport, and beyond. That is the story of this thread, and this event, that few seem to notice.

IF JoPa enabled this guy, intentionally, and it can be proven, THEN he can gets tossed. We are a long long way from those proceedings, but few here seem to care. They've convicted him already, knowing close to nothing. Tats what bugs the bejesus out of me.

(And The only thing I like about PSU is their logo, LOL.)

As of today, Joe Paterno is an honorary member of the board of directors of the charity in question.

I personally feel that this goes much deeper than just Paterno. Based on nothing but ‘gut’, I suspect that this behavior was not just with Paterno alone, which would partly explain the lack of proper reporting.

Children being raped ! How anyone could even look at , or be in the same ‘space’ with him, after these charges were made, is nothing short of mind boggling.

Time will tell.

I read the entire sordid report. I’m aware of the facts. Continue in your state of denial.

“Homosexuals are a protected species. You cannot look upon their actions and declare, “That is wrong”. It is risky to condemn them.”

ESPECIALLY in an environment where the King of the Valley, the University President:

Is trying to create the most gay-friendly college campus in America;

fired it’s 27-yr Womens’s basketball coach for DARING to say that homosexuality would not be tolerated in her program;

approved the creation of an all-gay fraternity (I’ll bet they have an interesting “Hell Week”);

Approves of the yearly “QUEERFEST”, and “C#ntFest”;

and wrote his dissertation on Wife-Swapping....

What I'm getting is tired... Tired of foolish people ho do not see that their knee-jerk reactionism leads our nation down a horrifying path. Read a history book someday. We are not treading new territory here.

yes, I get that several children were hurt, and had their lives disrupted far beyond anything I've ever had to deal with. (the fact that their parents did little for a decade doesn't seem to mean anything to anyone here, either. Where is the anger at THEIR failure to act?) That still does not change the fact that the mob mentality and overreactions that are already happening set a bad precedent, and lead us all down a bad path. I'll join in a prayer for the boys... And still know that my points here are correct. Intense emotions do NOT change Truth or Justice. I care too much about our grandchildrens future Freedoms to fall in line with the Five Minute Hate crowds.

Death Penalty will be coming around for PSU.

Ben, I've seen this said several times. What does it mean? I'm not familiar with the term as it applies to a college.

What a contrast as to how Sandusky’s known abuse was ignored by the DA, and covered-up by higher-ups at Penn State, and Duke University labeled the innocent Lacrosse players as rapists, and the DA pursued charges that never happened.

WHAT did Sandusky have on whom such that he was allowed to play with boys for years and nobody could touch him?

Willful blindness. People didn't want to believe that "royalty" would do that. Sandusky was royalty at PSU. If he went down for that in 98, there probably would have been a house cleaning and "retirement" for Paterno just because he hired Sandusky.

That's not to mention the black eye for "their team"

Yet you avoid answering my question in post #261. That tells me a lot about your idea of right and wrong.

A report is insufficient for conviction. You see, we used to have these funny things called courts and juries and due process and other assorted inconveniences. Thankfully, we got rid of them in the early 21st century, so we don’t have to wait before punishing hundreds and hundreds of tangentially associated folk who may or may not have known a thing. Welcome to our Brave New World! Yeehaw!

Ben, I've seen this said several times. What does it mean? I'm not familiar with the term as it applies to a college.

The death penalty is the popular term for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)'s power to ban a school from competing in a sport for at least one year. It is the harshest penalty that an NCAA member school can receive.

It has been implemented only five times:

The University of Kentucky basketball program for the 1952–53 season.

The basketball program at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette) for the 1973–74 and 1974–75 seasons

The Southern Methodist University football program for the 1987 and 1988 seasons.

The Division II men's soccer program at Morehouse College for the 2004 and 2005 seasons.

The Division III men's tennis program at MacMurray College for the 2005–06 and 2006–07 seasons.

“I just don’t see how that game can go on now.”

Me neither. I don’t see how their season can go on. I think the admin at PSU made a move in the right direction tonite but this is so much more than that. This isn’t kids cheating academically or getting free cars or even hookers and blow. This is a revered group of coaches, led by an icon who won more games than any coach in history, covering up for and allowing continued access to a child rapist. For over a decade.
I talked to alot of friends at work and to my buddies, all college football nuts like myself, and we all pretty much agreed that PSU continuing on this year would only ultimately make things worse. The taint from this deal is not gonna get washed away by firing JoePa and a bunch of admins. Shut it down now, fire the staff and bring in a straight shooter head coach and bunch of likewise assistants.
Can you imagine going out to recruit if you are an assistant coach associated with this? I would not want to sit down in a living room with parents trying to sell them on Penn State if I was there when this happened even if I had nothing to do with it. What a horrible deal this is.
