UPDATE - Nov. 9: The Associated Press is reporting that Joe Paterno has decided to retire at the end of the season.
As the amount of alleged victims in the Jerry Sandusky case climbs rapidly, reports are emerging that Penn State head coach Joe Paterno's coaching career will soon come to an end. Official support for Paterno is reportedly "eroding," even as Nittany Lion fans rally in support of the longtime coach.
The New York Times reported Tuesday that Paterno's 46 years as Nittany Lion head coach "will soon be over, perhaps within days or weeks." According to two sources familiar with top administrative discussions who spoke to the Times, talks to determine "how to manage his departure have begun."
"The board of trustees has yet to determine the precise timing of Paternos exit," the Times writes, "but it is clear that the man who has more victories than any other coach at college footballs top level and who made Penn State a prestigious brand will not survive to coach another season."

Well geeze, the guy is 200 years old.
Right. Put out there to try and make it through Saturday. The trustees should can him today.
Sad end to a historic career. Tarnished after 46 years. The team and the university will not be the same. Joe Paterno was to go out on top. This certainly is not a celebration. The team and the school has fallen.
I wonder if the NCAA or the investigators will demand further disciplinary action against Penn State.
Looks like there’s even worse that Spanier and the trustees want to hide. And that in addition to aiding and abetting a pedophile, Paterno’s all for a good ol’ fashioned spot of blackmail.
So, it’s clear he needs to go because of his proximity to these crimes....but HOLDER....no, he should STAY.
Makes e physically ill...the hypocrisy. See my tagline.
Sorry to see you go Joe, but you really should have done the right thing 10 years ago. Now you will have to live with your actions, or inaction as it were.
schu
Can’t fire him before the bowl game. /s
Lots coming outta the woodwork: Gricar, how Portland was treated, Spanier being on, then off Barry’s short list for SecEd....
Morally complicit in the crime of child molestation.
He has to go immediately.
Like he had a choice. I get the feeling if Penn State wasn’t in the thick of the Big Ten race, he would have been gone earlier.
There's a lot of morally-confused students at Penn State. The rally at JoePa's house was about as appropriate as the OWS movement. They don't know what they are celebrating if they chose this particular moment for that rally. Not unique to PSU. Campus speech-codes and a general lack of standards throughout the US education were the fertile ground for this spectacle.
Spanier tried to get rid of Paterno when Spanier got to PSU. Spanier couldn’t do it. Wonder why.....
To say Saturday’s game with Nebraska will be surreal, is the understatement of the year.
I doubt that JoePa will last the week. IMO, No way he lasts to the end of the season
The Huskers might want to be sure they don’t leave any corn cobs behind in ‘Happy Valley’ after the game...
Why wait until the end of the season. He should man up and leave immediately if he feels any remorse for his inaction and lack of follow-up on a heinous crime.
Obama considering ex-UNL chancellor for secretary of education, reports say
Check out the next to the last paragraph.
I’m a little fuzzy on Joe Pa’s role in this.
As far as I know, someone came to Joe with a rumor. Joe immediately went to his superior. Is Joe supposed to be all knowing? Isn’t it possible that Joe thought it was handled and the rumors are false. You know, they’re trying to use the same mentality on Herman Cain. It’s not the truth, but the seriousness of the charges that’s driving things.
As Lawrence, from ‘Office Space’ would say, “Watch your Cornhole, Bud.”
