DNC chairwoman joins food stamp challenge By Ariel Katz - 11/08/11 03:13 PM ET

Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) joined at least 10 other Democratic House members on Monday in participating in the food stamp challenge.

“Started #FoodStampChallenge today. 46m Americans subsist on
$31.50/week. Bought 1st 4 days of food for $18. So tough! http://yfrog.com/h2ehabhj”,
 Wasserman Schultz tweeted Monday night.

The food stamp challenge consists of living for a week on the average food stamp budget, which Democratic congressmen are participating in to show the struggles of surviving on food stamps.

Wasserman Schultz tweeted her first meal early on Tuesday: “Lunch:
tuna sandwich & apple w/ tap H20. #FoodStampChallenge shows how hard
surviving on food stamps really is. We must fight hunger in US!”

Like previous Democratic House participants, Wasserman Schultz is
taking suggestions from followers on Twitter.

Wasserman Schultz has heeded some of their advice, buying generic-brand peanut butter and mac and cheese.

Wasserman Schultz has her plate full, also juggling her role
as chairwoman of the Democratic Party.

Maybe she should talk to Obama about letting the private sector make some jobs so we can get the record number of people on food stamps down.

Blabber Mouth Schultz is a tool.

Plus, I thought food stamps were to assist in feeding people, not to be 100% of a persons food allotment.

These are millionaires.

Does anyone really think they will do this when no one is watching??

Does anyone think they won’t send their maid or driver to the nearest 4 star french restaurant when the cameras leave?

So food stamps were meant to supply all of your food needs?

Either way, you can survive on them I am sure, you will not like surviving on them for long. Maybe that is the point of not just giving everyone $800 for food each month in food stamps.

It isn’t supposed to be Easy St. when you are on Government assistance.

She needs to join the “challenged.”

Not the food stamp challenge.

She’s the one that said Obama turned the economy around.

Yep. She’s “challenged” alright.

So she’s going to sell the stamps, buy a couple of bottles of cheap vodka and stay drunk as long as she can?

The reason it's 'average' is because the average food stamp recipient has enough money of their own to 'help' pay for their own groceries.

Dems are either being played for fools - or they're trying to play the public for fools... or both...

Master freeloaders, playing at being Peon freeloaders... Insulting any way you look at it.

If she thinks the food stamps are hard, she should try finding a job to earn the money to pay for her dinner and for others to eat for free too. That is much harder.

My wife helps out a family who has had to apply for food stamps. Hardworking father, out beating the pavement everyday looking for work. Degreed, professional and willing to do just about do anything. However, he is told he is over qualified for most of the positions. Can’t even get a convenience store job.

They get about $350 per month and my wife helps with the budgeting of this. At their request of course. My wife can feed our family of five on about $150 per month through the use of coupons and generic doesn’t necessarily enter our home. She is not one of those extreme types, she buys only what we eat and the staples are always in our home.

They did this stunt before.

Live on it for a couple months, when you would have to replace things like salt & pepper, ketchup, flour, sugar, spices, peanut butter, jams, - things you only have to replace periodically.

Just another phony dog and pony show.

The food stamp challenge WOULD be at least difficult, but not impossible (it’s FREE food, can’t they at least be grateful!!). However, usually people who qualify for food stamps ALSO receive free breakfast/lunch/snacks for their children at school and weekend take home bags of food. This also happens during the summer. Not to mention the free food banks that are available. And WIC, etc.

Seriously, if a person really wanted to be resourceful they could eat VERY WELL on the amount of supplemental food help they receive.
