Developer holds off Occupy Oakland crooks with shotgun

About eight men and women dressed in black, faces covered in bandannas and armed with hammers, sticks and poles had just barged down the doors of Oakland's landmark Rotunda Building -- with another dozen behind them -- when they were turned back by a tenant with a shotgun and an attitude.

This wasn't your average building employee, this was Oakland developer and building owner Phil Tagami who provided a one-man sentry for the Frank H. Ogawa Plaza building that he oversaw a $50 million renovation on in years past.

"They took a few steps forward and I racked the shotgun and they left," Tagami said Thursday, still calming from the events of the previous night. "It's sort of the universal 'Don't come any farther' sign."

And the group didn't. They high-tailed back out through the front doors and joined the raucous crowd outside.

The Oakland native and longtime mover and shaker surveyed extensive damage to the building Thursday, estimating hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage, from broken windows to vandalism to destroyed property.

"It's not hyperbole to say we were under siege last night," he said.

Tagami, who worked late Wednesday, brought his shotgun from home before leaving for work -- just in case. About 10:30 p.m., as the situation deteriorated outside his building, he told the janitorial staff to leave the first floor, and pulled the security guard from his desk.

Tagami said he phoned the mayor's office and began communicating with senior staff around 10:45 p.m. voicing his concerns. Yet police were nowhere in sight, he said.

Expect charges to be filed shortly against “The Gunman”. If he’s lucky, if he’s not they’ll use tear gas and flash bangs.

these liberal-run cities

That would include Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Austin. The Occupy Austin bunch was allowed to camp squat overnight where there is normally a curfew. But I don't live in any of those places.. so I'm not too concerned. The closest one is an hour away.

My son finished high school in 02 and was bound to join right away. I told him he would be able to do more for our country as an officer than as an enlisted. He applied for an ROTC scholarship and got it. He is currently a LT being paid by the Navy to get his masters degree in astronautical engineering.

I am such a lucky man!

An armed mob moving toward him - he had a "justified fear for his life". Everyone involved understood that central legal fact, and the losers retreated. Nice outcome. I love the sound of a pump action shotgun!

You might want to shoot at some large paper targets (newspaper!) and see what your spread looks like. At my house an average shot would be 10’ or less. Buckshot in a clump the size of my fist would cause a lot of damage - but it is not the “scattergun” that is portrayed in the movies.

And make sure you have buckshot - I used to have #4 shot or something but have learned that won’t reliably take a bad guy down. Although the #4 or birdshot is great for practice. I practice a few shots once in awhile without hearing protection just so in “real life” the sound might not surprise me too much. Although I suppose in real life that will be the least of our concerns!

And in my house I have it loaded - no sense giving a warning with a racking of the shell. Although in some cases - such as this one - I guess that might be good.

Glad to hear you have a son-in-law that loves you!

My kids have supplied me well with shells. Have sluggers, bird shot, targetloads. It has a pretty good spread, At my daughters home, we shot across the pond and floating stuff in the pond, it has a wide spread at about 80 ft.(just guessing at the 80 ft.) I was shooting a bit down hill to the pond...and could hit the tree aiming at on the other side of the pond. They live in the woods and the pond is about an acre or more in total...Shooting can be fun.

I tell my son in law he is my favorite son in law, but he always says, hey I am your only son in law...to which I reply that doesn't mean I have to like you, but I do...:O). Have 4 son's and all the men get along, go camp hunting every year (bow and arrow) and grandsons go also.. I am not a hunter.

I kept the gun at my daughters until I had enough experience loading and shooting. Figure it wouldn't be good to keep it at my home if I didn't know how to use it...I can get some practice from my deck also...I have 4 1/2 acres with my closest neighbor 1/4 mile away and the other neighbor 1/4 mile in the other direction and he's a vets clinic. Nothing behind me. Christmas and birthday I get more ammo. Its good to have a gun and great if you never have to use it...
