Cold Fusion Experiment: Major Success or Complex Hoax?
Fox News ^ | November 02, 2011 | John Brandon

Posted on 11/02/2011 11:41:45 AM PDT by isaiah55version11_0

A physicist in Italy claims to have demonstrated a new type of power plant that provides safe, cheap and virtually unlimited nuclear power to the world, without fossil fuels or radiation concerns.

The only hitch: Scientists say the method -- cold fusion -- is patently impossible. They say it defies the laws of physics.

Andrea Rossi doesn't seem to care. He told FoxNews.com that his new device takes in nickel and hydrogen and fuses them in a low-grade nuclear reaction that essentially spits out sheer power, validating the strange science.

Allan hinted on his blog that an unnamed “customer” of Rossi's device is a military organization that starts with an N. Rossi said this customer measured and verified the test -- and told FoxNews.com that Paul Swanson with the U.S. Navy’s Space and Naval Warfare Systems unit (SPAWAR) can vouch for the demonstration.

FoxNews.com spoke with a man at SPAWAR who identified himself as Swanson, and who said only that he was "not in a position to talk to the press." Several other sources within the Navy and the Pentagoneither declined to comment or did not return messages.

Looks like Swanson couldn't vouch for it.

How many ping lists are you on? They all have a blurb of some sort.

So, does this mean you’ll spread your focused invective onto every FReeper that has a ping list, or is that only reserved for me?

The heat is initiated by electrical resistance,” Rossi explained, a stage that takes about two hours. The reactors then produce another 479kWh of energy for another 3-4 hours without needing that initial electrical input -- the low-level nuclear reaction continues on its own.

I think this is a scam. If it was genuine nuclear energy it should run for YEARS. Their output sounds like an everyday chemical reaction.

The idea that cold fusion might exist is surely worth exploring

Muon catalyzed cold fusion has been accepted by science for over 50 years. The problem is it requires more energy than it produces. If any other type of cold fusion exists it probably has the same problem. Nickel fusing with hydrogen to create copper absorbs energy, for instance.

So what if it is not technically fusion? If it turns out to be an economical source of power from relatively available and safe fuel(s), I’ll take it.

Let’s say this ends up being a chemical reaction...Because of all the brou-ha-ha about it being cold fusion, would it distract everyone for looking an opportunity for cheap energy being generated by a chemical reaction?

Reportedly one unit has been running for several years. They are supposed to run around 6 months between nickel recharges. The public demos have been sufficient to rule out chemical reactions, though if Rossi was using different techniques to hide wires, or store some kind of battery in some of the shorter demos, it’s possible this is some kind of fraud. But we’ve been tracking it on FR (in scores of threads) since January and no one has figured it out yet if it is bogus.

Too bad you agree, because the "dubiousness" exists only in the eyes of the knee-jerk antis, and arises almost entirely from their FUD suppositions.

But, if the measurements WERE taken with a little forethought; there would be no FUD at all. For example, in the question of wet vs dry steam; let's just heat some water instead of making it steam. Increase the flow rate, heat water 'x' degrees above ambient - log the increase, calculate the power. Straight forward, no Enthalopy losses, no phase-change to p*ss and moan about. Staightforward, inexpensive and reliable.

It seems like Rossi is his own worst enemy. Why make things needlessly complex and uncertain? It does not build confidence.

BTW, work is blocking the LENR/CANR website - using my iPad to hop there now. I hope this is substanciated, this would be a world-changing device. I doubt he's a fraudster - a smart fraudster keeps his name out of the news. Make your pitch, grab the money and run. Short, sweet and quiet. Rossi is not doing any of the above. He's dragging this out (longer than I would have), he's vocal and making as big of splash as he can.

But, the mess he finds himself in, is largely of his own making. With commercial data-loggers having several hundreds of channels, he could easily borrow an Agilent data-logger capable of high resolution, hundreds of channels, and Terabytes of data - at no cost. A sales rep, in the hopes of grabbing future sales - would gladly deliver a freshly calibrated unit to him, free of charge.

Check out the corrosion or deposits after a few hours of operation.

Let’s say this ends up being a chemical reaction...

No chemical reaction involving elemental Hydrogen and Nickel will produce elemental Copper. That's nuclear, by definition.

Sounds good to me. No NRC oversight.

And the chemicals are... Nickel & Hydrogen + whatever the catalyst is? Even the greenieweenies won’t have much to say about that.

The public demos have been sufficient to rule out chemical reactions,

Even Rossi's scientist friend, Levi, said he would like to see it run for more than 24 hours before ruling out a chemical reaction.

And such nuclear reactions absorb energy rather than produce it.
