For more than 60 years, the National Park Service has been trying to reach out to African Americans and Latinos. But its 395 parks, monuments, waterways, historic places and recreational areas remain largely the province of white Americans and tourists from around the world.
In an interview, Park Service Director Jon Jarvis reiterated an old lament: Parks must attract a more diverse slice of the American public or eventually risk losing taxpayer support. Yet only about 1% of the nearly 4 million people who visit Yosemite each year are African Americans.
So officials were elated earlier this month when they learned that two groups of African Americans... were touring the park on the same day.
That meant there were more than 65 black Americans on the valley floor on the same day, an event so rare that ranger Shelton Johnson... called it "possibly unprecedented."

They want you to trade-in your Yosemite trip for two weeks in Detroit to help promote diversity. ........are there any Occupiers there? You would think that a city of over 700,000 and the rank conditions there would be able to generate a good size gathering. Hell Oakland has less than 400,000 people, oh, that’s right they are employed somewhere as opposed to those in Detroit.
How sad that this is the spotless logic that is applied in most Federal and State government decisions regarding diversity.
The "equity in outcome" mentality is alive and well and being applied at an ever increasing rate to the most mundane aspects of our society and culture (what's left of it.)
Don’t forget the crack houses!
Political correctness is mandatory, enforced stupidity.
How about some forced tour busing? That worked out so well to integrate schoolkids, just do it to visitors.
It’s really amazing how our government itself is the biggest race panderer.
interesting.
it would seem to be cultural—black americans have other priorities.
come to think of it, urban blacks are not that patriotic.
small town and rural Christian blacks are more patriotic.
What a dumb ass RAT bastard pig that Jon Jarvis is. Hey Jarvis, you want to turn our national parks into ghetto-type dumps like Detroit or Newark or Oakland? Actually blacks don't really care much for national parks or scenery because the crack & cocaine & pimping opportunities just aren't there, like in "da hoods". Plus the 3 or 4 feet of snow in Yosemite makes it awfully hard to walk in 6 inch stilleto heels or to stand in a 4 ft snowbank pimping yourself for a crack hit.
Actually the average American taxpayers love our national park systems just the way they are...without a bunch of obnoxious ghetto bangers & flash mobs to deal with.
Real diversity would look like this: taxpayers get to trod where the park rangers trod.
They could just take those those Universal Studios tour trams on an unexpected detour.
If I may make a slight change in your statement:
small town and rural Christian Americans are more patriotic

Maybe we should give a free vacation to every latino and black RESIDENT of the US... now thats FAIR </ sarcasm>

Ken Salazar urges more Latino-themed national parks, sites
Less than 3 percent of all the national landmarks that we have the highest designation you can receive as a historic landmark are designated for women, Latinos, African Americans or other members of minority groups, Salazar said in a meeting with reporters last week. That tells you that the score is not even.
Nature cares which skin color visits its beauty?
My family and I went to the Canyonlands and Arches last week. A family member, their first time to see Utah, commented on the lack of blacks in Utah and the National Parks. My theory, in general, is that nature, and the viewing of nature, just isn’t that exciting for most blacks. I like it, but I don’t like rap. Different strokes for different folks.
A lot of “those people” belong to a different culture. They are equal to us before the Law, but they are not like us. It is what it is.
