The clash between Oakland police and Occupy Wall Street protesters left a Marine veteran who completed two Iraq tours in critical condition Wednesday after he was struck by a police projectile, a veterans' group said.
Scott Olsen, 24, suffered a fractured skull Tuesday as he marched with other protesters toward City Hall, said Dottie Guy, of the Iraq Veterans Against the War. The demonstrators had been making an attempt to re-establish a presence in the area of a disbanded protesters' camp when they were met by police officers in riot gear.
Several small skirmishes broke out and officers cleared the area by firing tear gas.
It's not known exactly what type of object struck Olsen, currently a systems network administrator in Daly City, or whether he'll need surgery, Guy said.
"It's still too early to tell," Guy said. "We're hoping for the best."
Curt Olsen, a spokesman for Highland Hospital in Oakland, confirmed that the veteran was in critical condition but could not release any more information.
The clash Tuesday came as officials complained about what they described as deteriorating safety, sanitation and health issues at the dismantled camp.
Olsen, who completed his service last year, participated in the protest because he felt corporations and banks have too much influence on the government, Guy said.
A vigil for him is scheduled to be held Wednesday evening near the Oakland City Hall, she said. Multiple attempts to reach Oakland police Wednesday by The Associated Press were unsuccessful, but the department was scheduled to take part in a news conference at 4:30 p.m.

Zots are fun, I wish they’d relieve my migraine headache. The only thing that would do that would be a blizzard in Zucchini Park to run the hippies back to their parents houses.
These people are not protesting against government, they are protesting against people who work for a living. They want bigger and more government. They are protesting in favor of tyranny like the Brownshirts of the 30’s.

I am not talking about OWS in particular—we know who they are and what they represent. Earlier, I posed the question, at what point does the citizenry, in their petitioning the government of grievances, no longer obey the government edict to dismiss? Thinking in particular of say the Tea Party or the 53%ers.
For if the government ignores the citizens petition, do the citizens have the right to take the issue further? I say yes, with the caveat that those citizens have to be prepared to take it all the way until the end.
Remember our founding history. The colonials had no more right to continue with their “protest”, than say OWS, or the Tea Party, or whomever. See my point here?

Second ZOT on this thread: FritzG has done rode the lightning.
I agree with that, then.
I’ve had a few dreams toward that end myself lately. lol.
The neo-Nazi’s are protecting OWS with AR-15’s in Phoenix!!
Interesting indeed. The comment section was enlightening too.
I’m afraid that this will be the spark which ignites this whole thing. Until now, all the action has been in New York, where it will begin snowing in a few weeks. Oakland doesn’t get snow, so I predict that this becomes the new epicenter and this poor misguided kid becomes a rallying point for the ignorant. The Marxists have been waiting for a moment like this.
They haven't been "waiting" for this moment, they have been working towards it. Just like Tom Hayden and Abbie Hoffman were coldly and deliberately inserting violent people and tactics into their demonstrations to spur on retaliations by the authorities, so have these people been doing that there.
Again, this injured guy was wearing a "Veterans for Peace" T-Shirt, so he assumed the risk that came with being part of that organization, but as chock full of misguided, dumb people as that organization is, it remains that they are being served up as cannon fodder.
Look at this picture that I found on Jeff Head's website, a picture taken at one of the Occupy Whatever "rallies" going on somewhere:
I have no evidence to support this, it is just a gut feeling, but there was something about the look of this that made me think this guy throwing the beer bottle was acting deliberately on the instructions of someone, and being paid for it. Again, no proof, but that was my gut feeling when I first saw this picture.
And there are people, in this very forum, who justify and approve of this.
Sigh. It is like battling cockroaches and rats. The vermin will be back wearing another skin. But thank you. I was glad to see that one go.
