Could a Russia-US rail tunnel be built?

Russian officials have backed the idea of a rail tunnel linking Russia and the US.

It would run under the Bering Strait for 105km (65 miles) - twice the length of the UK-France Channel Tunnel.

The tunnel itself has been estimated to cost $10-12bn and to take 10-15 years to build.

But an additional 4,000km (2,485 miles) of new track would be needed to link it to Russia's rail network, plus another 2,000km (1,243 miles) to connect to existing services on the US side.

It is a nice idea. This is the last remaining link that if built would connect by rail everyone from London to South Africa, Asia, and down to the tip of South America.

Last time I checked, it's 2011, and you still can't drive from El Paso to Buenos Aires (or anywhere else in South America). Near the border between Panama and Colombia, you encounter the need for a helicopter.

Wouldn’t that be like a tunnel to nowhere?

Whoever made that video has no clue what the heck a sketchboard is.

They are ABSOLUTELY clueless ‘bout any of that. It IS a cool video though. The bugs sort of threw me off though. And the snake, and the lying on the back with the balls exposed (don’t know ‘bout that either), and there’s OTHER things too. But the video’s great as far as that goes...

Next time I’m at an interview and the guy aks me what aminal I am: that’s me (me one of them). Woah, what the heck them be?

They be like skunk-wolverines, right?

How Romantic. Siberian Train ride. It could be like Dr. Zhivago, right?

Maybe that’s because she thinks you won’t be willing to share.

Dig a train tunnel right over a tectonic plate fault with active volcanoes, what could possibly go wrong with that?

Goods transported through this tunnel could have been shipped from anywhere in Asia or even Europe. I’m not sure what the relative costs are between shipping or rail. I assume, however, this is a way of bringing down transport costs so even more cheap Asian crap comes into the country.

Almost everyone, except Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Ireland, and Iceland would be connected to this rail network.

Japan and Korea are in the planning stages for a tunnel that would connect the two countries. It would be twice as long as this one.

bushie 1 made a huge mistake when the wall came down...we should have taken the fledgling democracy under our wings and helped them... instead we ignored the russians, and the distrust started all over again... a tunnel linking our continents would go a long way to right that wrong.....and would be a great thing...imagine driving from new york to moscow, paris, london, etc.....way too cool
