Russian officials have backed the idea of a rail tunnel linking Russia and the US.
It would run under the Bering Strait for 105km (65 miles) - twice the length of the UK-France Channel Tunnel.
The tunnel itself has been estimated to cost $10-12bn and to take 10-15 years to build.
But an additional 4,000km (2,485 miles) of new track would be needed to link it to Russia's rail network, plus another 2,000km (1,243 miles) to connect to existing services on the US side.

Heck, maybe one day someone will invent airplanes or cargo ships and we won't have to build a tunnel.
That is a loooong ride to anywhere useful
However, we are in a depression now, and the future is not looking like more integration, but more protectionism and trade wars. We may end up with less trade in the future that we currently have now.
Why? We don’t need easy access to Russia, ever. The longer and more difficult it is to get from there to here, the better.
It’s millions and millions of degrees down there. It’s suicide I tell ya!
Why is this needed?
Finally, a direct commute for all those people that need to transit between the Alaskan wilderness to the Eastern Siberian wilderness! Can Mars be too far off?
Good point there. The Russians cannot be trusted.
Somehow the idea of a tunnel crossing between major tectonic plates doesn’t seem like a very long term idea.
That tunnel WILL eventually be built.
Same for a tunnel under the Strait of Gibralter.
Has Sarah offered an easement?
