Could a Russia-US rail tunnel be built?

Russian officials have backed the idea of a rail tunnel linking Russia and the US.

It would run under the Bering Strait for 105km (65 miles) - twice the length of the UK-France Channel Tunnel.

The tunnel itself has been estimated to cost $10-12bn and to take 10-15 years to build.

But an additional 4,000km (2,485 miles) of new track would be needed to link it to Russia's rail network, plus another 2,000km (1,243 miles) to connect to existing services on the US side.

interesting topic for engineers but I can’t imagine the economics working. It would basically link two vast wilderness areas.

Heck, maybe one day someone will invent airplanes or cargo ships and we won't have to build a tunnel.

It is a nice idea. This is the last remaining link that if built would connect by rail everyone from London to South Africa, Asia, and down to the tip of South America. Almost everyone, except Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Ireland, and Iceland would be connected to this rail network.

However, we are in a depression now, and the future is not looking like more integration, but more protectionism and trade wars. We may end up with less trade in the future that we currently have now.

Why? We don’t need easy access to Russia, ever. The longer and more difficult it is to get from there to here, the better.

Finally, a direct commute for all those people that need to transit between the Alaskan wilderness to the Eastern Siberian wilderness! Can Mars be too far off?

Good point there. The Russians cannot be trusted.

Somehow the idea of a tunnel crossing between major tectonic plates doesn’t seem like a very long term idea.

That tunnel WILL eventually be built.
Same for a tunnel under the Strait of Gibralter.

Why would anybody care what Sarah - Michelle Gellar - or Jessica Parker - et ali, thinks 'bout the matter?

Dunno what people are thinkin' anymore these days. Gee! Sarah Jessica Parker offered an easement for a Russian / US tunnel.

Wow! Are people THAT god-damned stupid to be swayed by such insignificnt trivia - as that - to actually vote "like that" on their Face-Butt or Ass-Book page? Holy Crepe's for Buttman, Robin!

RFLOL.

What a hoot Freepers are, eh? Some of the seemingly more lucid ones are actually the greatest hoot, ya know?

I’m glad that I brought joy into somebody’s life today.

I must state that I’m suprised to see how little it takes to amuse you.
