Senate Democrats will hold vote Friday on $35 billion jobs bill
By Alexander Bolton - 10/19/11 03:07 PM ET

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said he will schedule a vote to proceed to a $35 billion jobs bill on Friday.

"We're going to make sure there's a vote on our bill this week," Reid said.

The $35 billion measure would direct federal funds to states to prevent layoffs of teachers, police officers and firefighters.

Democrats estimate the legislation will save or create 400,000 jobs. Most of the funding, $30 billion, would go to teachers. First responders would get $5 billion.

It would be paid for by a 0.5 percent tax increase on income over $1 million.

The American taxpayer will just have to contribute a little more to keep those teacher unions in the clover. After all, it's for the children /s

I was under the impression this was a one year deal, and yet the tax will continue forever?

The way they have doing this lately, they will spend all the money this year but will be paying it off over 10 years.

Can anyone give me a clue as to how much money the school systems need? Will they be satisfied once they get every last penny of money there is? Turn over every dime earned in this country, all the trust fund money from the rich, the value of all goods and services amd my guess they would still be asking for more.

Wow, 380,000 teachers and 20,000 firemen each getting a $90K salary. Dems love to spend other peoples’ money. This will do more to the choke the economy because more government jobs mean fewer private sector jobs.

Obviously we need better (not more) math teachers.

I thought all spending bills originate in the House? When did they pass this bill? The senate can pass this but doesn’t the house have to vote on it too or have we just thrown the constitution out the window?

I really do not mind spending more money on teachers and police. I just hate sending the money to Washington. Is there anyplace else we could send the money and get better value?

“Will the Republicans cave?”

Is there anyone who believes that Boehner or McConnell have backbones? These lilly-livered, spineless, globs of quivering Jell-O? Nope.

They do. For show the Senate will try to pass that bill.
