Perry Commits to Flat Tax, Reforming Entitlements
The Weekly Standard ^ | October 19, 2011 | Daniel Halper

Posted on 10/19/2011 11:05:30 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

Las Vegas - In a brief speech this morning at the Western Republican Conference, Texas governor Rick Perry announced that in six days he would reveal an “economic pro-growth package that will create growth” and encourage investment in America. The plan will involve major tax reform, entitlement reform, a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution, an abolishment of earmarks, and a recommitment to energy exploration in the United States.

“Our long term growth requires a fundamental tax reform,” Perry said. Therefore, his plan “starts with scrapping the three million words of the current tax code—starting over with something simple: a flat tax.”

“I want to make the tax code so simple that even Timothy Geithner can file his taxes on time,” the Texas governor said, taking a jab at the treasury secretary who had major errors in his tax returns that were revealed after he was nominated by President Barack Obama for his present job.

“The second part of my plan involves the serious commitment to spending, realizing alternatives” to the path taken by Europe, Perry said. In this vein, the Texas governor went on to affirm his commitment to “reforming entitlements, preserving those commitments to those who are on Social Security … and those approaching the age of retirement.”

Perry did not give further details on what the new flat tax rate would be (or how it might work) or on how he would reform entitlements.

On the balanced budget amendment, Perry committed to campaigning in all fifty states, if necessary, in order to get the provision added to the Constitution.

And he promised to end earmarks: “My plan is to end earmarks for good.”

In revealing tidbits of his economic plan, Perry played up his anti-establishment credentials.

There is one candidate running now who has written a book espousing conservative principles, and who has shown the ability to take good conservative ideas, get to get them implemented and to govern by them. There is one candidate who has both voiced the sound principles of federalism and a limited federal government, and has also implemented executive policies which enact those conservative principles.

And Newt Gingrich wrote the forward:

"FED UP!" -- Rick Perry [forward by NEWT GINGRICH]

Rick Perry's book "almost came too late"

Um, 9-9-9 and the flat tax are not the same animals.

I’m confused by your claim — why is it that Cain couldn’t say “If I’m elected, I’ll implement Neal Boortz’s copyrighted tax plan”? Is Neal holding his plan hostage for royalties or something? Is it actually a violation of a copyright for government to implement Neal’s plan?

Or are you saying that Cain couldn’t take credit for a plan if it had Neal’s name on it, so Cain had to come up with his own named plan?

And anyway, Cain has said he wants Fairtax, but that he didn’t think that would be poltiically popular, so he picked 9-9-9 because it WOULD be politically popular. Once he gets elected on 9-9-9 and implements it, he wants to then get rid of 9-9-9 and implement the Fairtax.

Is Fairtax the Boortz plan? Because 9-9-9 isn’t much like Fairtax.

Also, if 9-9-9 is Neal’s plan, why does Cain keep saying Richard Lowrie is the primary author of the plan?

And why, if it is Neal’s plan, do news reports keep saying that Arthur Laffer helped design the plan, along with Stephen Moore?

So now the 9-9-9 plan is co-owned by Boortz, Laffer, Moore, AND Lowrie?

And how does a new tax plan which is revenue neutral help “cut the size of government”?

sorry to tell you but if Cain goes down Conservatives will turn to Newt Gingrich to take on Romney

I don't doubt that there is a contingent that will do just that. There are some here that remind me so much of the piece of dust on the Swiffer commercials - they run and attach themselves to the latest candidate that has a knack for putting together pretty words.

Sooner or later, it's going to come down to the two best financed and organized candidates - I hope a lot of people will come around and decide to get behind the most conservative of the two that has the best chance to win. Let's give it a month - and then we'll see who the latest "flavor of the week" is.

The pictures is a self-contradicting mess! How can one claim ‘full-time leader’ when he is out shooting Skeet or birds? How does the posting illustrate fifference? It is aimed at similarities not differences!

I never was a fan of Perry's. I made that clear here in the past.

Romney is a RINO and strikes me as an odd character. I have several Mormon friends. I love them all but I think that Romney's being a Mormon will hurt him. The Mormon Jesus is not the same Jesus most Americans follow. This will be used against him. Cain is great for the campaign but he has little cash and very little campaign structure beneath him. Newt is the most informed person around but he has been uber-flaky over the years. I first met Ron Paul when I was a kid and used to drive around with him from campaign stop to campaign stop, He was saying the same things back then that he does now. But, he is way too long in the tooth and is a little unbalanced. Bachmann is creepy-crazy and seems like she wants to jump on the nuke ala Slim Pickens, scream like a banchee and go for a ride. Santorum is the karaoke singer of the group. He has heard the tune, he knows the lyrics, but does not sound like the real deal. No star quality.

At this point I support Perry. We are a long way off and to go the distance the winner needs three things: Money, Money, Money. Money buys so many things crucial to a campaign for president. Media, people, data, electronics, etc. Perry has that and he is not Romney. It is not likely to happen but a Perry/Rubio ticket would be insane. If Perry is around in 90 days I would not be surprised to see Palin come out for him. It was obvious that they had been talking. Perry knew Palin was not going to run when he jumped in to the race.

*******************************************

You are a smart person. Right down the line, you pretty much get it. You also show some flexibility and reasoning ability to change your support. We need a bunch more like you!!

999 is a hybrid of flat and fair tax and you will be using some the same arguments to defend the flat tax that some Perry supporters have been using against the 999.

You WILL NEVER get my vote unless you RENOUNCE "free" college tuition for ...

The truth is they are NOT getting free tuition. They are paying the same amount for their college as other TX residents.

There is an important distinction. Your premise is a LIE.

The difference between the price paid by a non-Texan US citizen and an illegal alien is certainly free.

It is excellent conservative stuff.

When Perry starts campaigning in primary states, making his own speeches and explaining his own plans, he will do well.

The debates are not his comfort zone, although I think he did as well as anybody last night.

Yeah, the more these squabblefests among rinos are aired, the better Newt looks. Frankly, the Republic is more important to me than the supposed baggage Newt is stamped with.

I’m pleasantly surprised and happy to read your post.

Haven’t a clue who he’d choose for VP but there are several good people. I’m sure it will be given a lot of thought.

I’d heard Sarah Palin was praising Newt Gingrich last night. Maybe both Newt and Sarah will back Perry.

Thanks.

Um, no, I won’t be using, at all. I am committed to understanding the differences, but you’re gonna have to do your own homework to see the differences.

This will not work. This legislation passes the TX legislature by a vote of around 170-4. It passed overwhelmingly. It is extremely popular in TX by Republicans and Democrats alike.

It would be stupid for Perry to call a special session of the legislature under this circumstance.

Not only that, this same legislation is becoming more and more popular all around the country. Even conservative states have passed it.

Good to hear that Perry is taking lessons from Cain!

You mean how Perry is taking the fight to liberal Romney? Just like Cain does? And just like Santorum does?

Oh hang on a second. Scratch Cain from the list. He doesn't go after Romney. He supported Romney in 2008 and would run as his VP. But not for Perry. Yeah nevermind on that.

As Cain is now pulling in about $1 million a week, don’t count him out. Newt seems to be in the most financial trouble at the moment. Regarding cash on hand, Romney may have to write himself another check. Most of Perry’s came right after he announced. Since the people have seen him, the contributions appear to be dwindling.
