Bill Maher bets $1 million Herman Cain won't be Republican nominee
Examiner ^ | 15 October 2011 | Liz Brown

Bill Maher may be anti-religion, but he's got faith in one thing: Herman Cain won't be the the 2012 Republican Presidential nominee.

Maher bet CNBC correspondent Michele Caruso-Cabrera $1 million that Cain won't earn the GOP nomination, and shook hands on the wager during Friday night's taping of his HBO political comedy show Real Time with Bill Maher.

Caruso-Cabrera was arguing that Cain's "incredible likeability factor" could carry him all the way when, Maher snarked back that he'd put a million dollars down against her one dollar that Cain won't win the nomination because Republicans can't deal with a non-white candidate.

What I don't understand is where you see the "guarantee", as this plan is a temporary step toward a flat tax and is more designed to stimulate economic growth in the meantime.

You can't "guarantee" anything in politics. Cain does not know what the composition of Congress will be if he is elected POTUS.

However, his plan clearly states that 9-9-9 is a first step towards the Fair Tax. A Fair Tax is what conservatives have been dreaming for decades.

Cain also wants the Balanced Budget Amendment with this. This will limit gov't spending to a percentage of GDP. Cain also includes a provision that tax increases must be with a 2/3 majority while tax decreases can be done with a simple majority.

There is not one person who can look at 9-9-9 and say it is inferior to our current, corrupt, IRS-laden tax system.

I’m going to mail Maher a crisp $1 bill in a certified letter with a copy to my lawyer stating that I will take him up on that offer.

From the small business owners I have spoken with about this subject, most will use a portion of the 7.5% to lower the prices on their products and services, thereby making them more competitive in the market.

You are forgetting that the corporate tax rate is cut to 9% as well. This is another boost for companies to lower prices and allows them to pass the 7.5% to their employees.

That's why Art Laffer, Steve Forbes and the Club for Growth have endorsed it. They all said it would create an economic boom and fantastic job growth.

Has Steve Forbes endorsed it? I read somewhere that he is advising Perry. Can you show me where Forbes has endorsed it?

I’m wondering that if 9-9-9 goes into effect, can I throw away my filing cabinet? Please?

You have got to be kidding me. What is so offensive to you about someone being asked to elaborate upon a conclusion they stated?

You have no idea what that particular poster’s objection to 999 is, nor do I, nor does the person who asked.

There’s nothing wrong with wanting to engage a particular’s posters arguments, which he brought into play by stating a conclusion.

And why in the world would you accuse people who have reached a different conclusion than you as to 999 of simply “dismissing criticism out of hand” and being lemmings? Do you not think it possible that thoughtful intelligent people can occasionally disagree with you?

From your statement, you seem to believe that anyone who disagrees with your conclusion on 999 is an idiot. That is not sound reasoning.

People can thoughtfully and thoroughly and intelligently research and study an issue and STILL sometimes reach a conclusion that differs from yours! Imagine!

I see something more here. Maher is not the first lib I’ve heard make this claim.

You are over-thinking this.

We understand liberals. We know how they think and what they will do.

Liberals, on the other hand, do not understand us. Why do you think they call the Tea Party racists? Why do you think they claim we cause violence?

Saying that Cain will not be our nominee because we are racists fits with their corrupt view of us. They have not taken the time to really understand us.

Remember, Garrofolo said Cain was paid to run in our primary just so we can say we are not racist.

These people do not think beyond their lips. They never do.

Don't overthink this and believe they want Cain because they already have dirt on him. That is a defeatist attitude.

Trust me, most liberals want Romney because he is Obama-lite and will roll back less of the liberal agenda.

For those liberals that actually think, Cain scares the hell out of them because it does blow-up their worldview and might take some of their grip on the black vote with it.

That’s why people should NOT cool their jets on the 999 plan. The more it is talked about and understood, the more ready and invested voters will be when the real debate on massive tax reform happens on Capitol Hill.

Assuming there is a President Cain. I don’t see any of those other guys staking out a bold position that will force a very needed fight in Washington.

If you think 999 equals more government, sorry, you’ve not done your homework.

Maybe the fact that so many people who have studied the plan, including here on FR, find it a brilliant step in the right direction should give you pause.

Oh, and love the name-calling. That’s the mark of a truly mature analysis.

My mother used to say: if you start to think that everybody but you is wrong on an issue: re-examine your conclusion.

it changes our focus from the real problem: Federal Government size and over-spending

Interesting point, however I see the plan as being 10% revenue negative. This, with obstacles put in place to prevent the government from increasing its revenue, have the net effect of reducing government spending and size.

I never said they might have dirt on him. I think Herman Cain is a fine man & there is no dirt to be found. I am over-thinking it - because this whole meme has just sprung up & I know that they get their talking points from on high. They have come too far with their Messiah Obama to let it slip through their fingers - there’s a plan here. I just can’t figure it out yet.

But they reveal themselves sooner than later.
