Ever wonder why candidates rarely have their spouses take the stump? Rick Perry's wife Anita told a South Carolina religious forum yesterday that she and her husband "were being brutalized by our opponents, and our own party. So much of that is, I think they look at him, because of his faith. He is the only true conservative -- well, there are some true conservatives. And they're there for good reasons. And they may feel like God called them too. But I truly feel like we are here for that purpose."
While her speech was intended to improve the Texas Governor's rapport with Christian conservatives after his poor showing in last weekend's Values Voter straw poll, (Mr. Perry came in a distant fourth, following Ron Paul, Herman Cain and Rick Santorum), she may have done more to alienate those voters than to help the cause.
Suggesting that voters who've turned against the Texas governor are religious bigots isn't likely to win them back.

so, his failing to admit Mormons aren’t Christian, won’t gain him any Mormon votes, but WILL lose him evangelical votes. ...poor tactics, and dishonest also.
Perry doesn’t seem to understand who his base was.

the last comments should give good advice to Perry.
They show, that if Perry was MORE evangelical, he’d lose a few “moderate” votes, but would net, GAIN votes.
If he’d act like a strong Texan, who proudly carries a Bible and a gun, he’d gain votes.

ESPECIALLY when evangelical Perry is silent,
about the Christians around the world,
who ARE being brutalized, persecuted, raped, and killed,
for their belief in Jesus.
Actually she is correct about the brutal smears and trash by media, Bachmann, Santorum, Cain, Paul and their supporters. Some of the vicious lies and smears on Free Republic have been beyond the pale.
