The Republican establishment is no longer terrified of the Tea Party, The New York Times' Matt Bai reports. It's now figured out how to absorb them like a slow-moving but powerful star that's swelling into a red giant.

Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol tells Bai that the Republican presidential nominee merely has to be conservative enough.

Kristol told me just after Perry entered the race, a development that essentially ended [the more radical Michele] Bachmann’s brief ascent. Establishment Republicans may prefer Romney to Perry, but their assumption is that either man can be counted on to steer the party back toward the broad center next fall, effectively disarming the Tea Party mutiny.

Bai adds, "George Will recently said there is no such thing as the Republican establishment." George Will wears a bow tie. He wears a bow tie so much he's on Wikipedia's "List of bow tie wearers." He started wearing bow ties as an anti-hippie statement in the 1960s and now, when he doesn't wear one, people ask him where his bow tie is. You can't get away with wearing a bow tie if you're not part of the Republican establishment.

Republican lobbyist Scott Reed tells Bai that the Tea Party's influence is "waning," because Republican leaders have embraced the Tea Partying members of Congress, instead of calling them "those people."

Did he mean to say that the party was slowly co-opting the Tea Partiers?

“Trying to,” Reed said. “And that’s the secret to politics: trying to control a segment of people without those people recognizing that you’re trying to control them.”

“I think I know what they want to accomplish, and I agree with most of it,” [Vin Weber] said. “But if they want to accomplish it, they need to ‘rise to the level of politics.’ I mean, you can’t just stand there and take a stand and say, ‘I’m not going to compromise on my position.’ Because you won’t achieve anything.”

If the Republican Party cannot learn from its mistakes, there is always an option for the Tea Party to become a third party with a President candidate to run to rip Republican Party into pieces. The Tea Party might not win, but at least it can whip the Republican Rinos until its Rinos learn a lesson and stop admiring leftist values.

There is a lot of wet dreaming going on out there. The Tea Party has not even started to throw it’s weight around in this election cycle. The establishment has not a clue at the might that has been built back up, replenished, and the precinct gains we’ve made since the 2010 elections.

As Kristol says, either Romney or Perry is establishment enough to please the GOP elites. They got rid or Palin and Bachmann. Now Cain is the only one standing in their way.

In an interview Friday, U.S. Army private Scott Thomas Beauchamp’s wife Elspeth Reeve, a former reporter-researcher at The New Republic, told the Observer that she was excited when someone at the magazine assigned her to fact-check one of her husband’s dispatches from Iraq.

“I was like, ‘Sweet! I can talk to Scott on TNR’s dime!’” Ms. Reeve said.

Ms. Reeve was working at TNR when Mr. Beauchamp–whose articles described soldiers killing dogs and mocking wounded civilians–was accused by critics of fabricating some of his material.

Mr. Foer has since written and published a 7,000-word piece retracting Mr. Beauchamp’s articles for TNR, noting that assigning Ms. Reeve to fact-check her husband’s work was a mistake.

Sadly, it at least appears that the original Tea Party we know an love has already been co-opted by the ‘establishment’ GOP.

It seemed to go all downhill when Boehner was elected to House Speaker. It’s obvious to me that he’s a defender of the status quo in DC. The Republicans control the House of Representatives, where all spending originates. Why are they still funding HHS, Department of Education, EPA, among various other agencies/programs that the FEDERAL government has no use or business funding? Those could be defunded within a year if they had the will to do so. Instead, not only do they continue to exist, their funding INCREASES due to the baseline increases in the budget, which is something ELSE that needs to be ended.

I’m still willing to be patient for a little longer, realizing the republicans don’t control EVERYTHING. Now, if they end up next year with 63 senatorial votes(need more than 60 to offset RINOS) along with the presidency, I’ll damn well be looking for some SERIOUS results, and if I don’t get them, I’ll never vote for another republican....

I’ve been saying that for a year. If the GOP screws up and loses to Obama in 2012, they are finished just like the Whigs in 1852. A new party will emerge, probably lose on its first time out, but then rally to win in 2020. And after that, we’ll see if 2020 becomes 1860 again.
