Critic's Notebook: Abortion a muted matter on 'Grey's Anatomy'
Los Angeles Times / latimes.com ^ | October 9, 2011 | By Mary McNamara, Los Angeles Times Television Critic

Posted on 10/08/2011 6:18:52 PM PDT by thecodont

... During the recent eighth-season premiere of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy," Dr. Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh) had an abortion.

It was not the first abortion for a character on network television — that would be "Maude's" in 1972, just before Roe vs. Wade made abortion legal nationwide — but it was the most culturally significant since then. Because unlike virtually every character who has ever had, or contemplated, an abortion (and on TV, fewer women have abortions than have brain surgery), Cristina is not a teenager, or a rape or an incest victim. She is not poor with eight kids and an abusive husband or suffering from mental illness. She does not have a rare disease that makes pregnancy a physical risk. Unlike Maude, she isn't an "older" woman with mid-life concerns. Cristina is married, healthy, financially stable and of prime childbearing years.

She chose to have an abortion because she did not want to have a child.

[...]

In television, as in life, real change is not big and new and flashy. It's not about how many women are on TV. It's not about the "Bridesmaids" effect or Whitney Cummings having two shows on competing networks.

Real change is slow and persistent, and often overlooked and occasionally irritating. It's about what women are doing on TV, and why they are doing it. It's about Alicia Florrick having great sex and then showing up at work in the morning, dealing with parental issues and getting her daughter a tutor.

And it's about Cristina Yang exercising her legal right to an abortion because she doesn't want to be a mother, and nobody really noticing.

I don't even watch this show.

What the author of the article considers so newsworthy is how culturally mainstream and "ho hum" abortion has become.

Put bluntly: Hearts have become deadened.

This was the television critic!?

This among the many reasons why I LOATHE the MSM. One can’t simply write about the the program or medium but has to pimp for abortion on the entertainment page.

Just what the SS guards must have thought: just another train to Auschwitz.

I now know why my parents absolutely loathed the show ‘Maude.’

With phones, Facebook and the Wii, who has interest in TV?

If I remember correctly, from back in 1999 when I had one, it’s a big, square, heavy thing, and you press buttons and mutter “nothing’s on,” and you press more buttons and mutter “nothing’s on,” and then you press MORE buttons, and mutter “nothing’s on.” Then you go outside.

I don’t think I’ll bother - sounds like it would waste valuable freeping time.

Why would one ever expect a doctor who doesn’t want to get pregnant to be able to avoid pregnancy?

Never mind. In real life, I know a doctor who fathered six children, the first two aborted, the last two unplanned and stressful.

Why don’t people with a scientific and mathematical understanding who really really don’t want pregnancy either use two independent methods, which bring the chances of pregnancy to less than 1 in 1000, or get sterilized, same odds.

Clinton’s “safe legal and rare” speech about his daughter who wanted to design space stations so she needed abortion available - wouldn’t redundancy be second nature to an aerospace engineer? Nah, the cognitive elite get carried away like the hoi polloi and they NEED abortion.

As a general rule, anything with Gothic script and the word “Times” belongs in the garbage.

Let’s not overgeneralize - it can come in handy when it’s time to housebreak a pet.

The article isn't about abortion becoming "ho-hum".

It's about the writer's view that abortion should occur for any reason that the mother of the pre-born baby to be killed wants the abortion to happen, without requiring any justification by circumstances or anything else.

The writer of the article has that view, as most abortion advocates do, and has been eager to say it, as most abortion advocates are.

The stupid TV show she references is her vehicle for doing so.

Don’t want to be a mother? Don’t have sex or use protection. There are plenty of options pertaining to birth control.
