Herman Cain leaving the campaign trail: Why now?
Herman Cain is surging in popularity in a number of polls. So why is Herman Cain putting his campaign on hold for the next month?
The Hermantor Experience is, by almost any measure, the hottest thing going in the GOP presidential primary (not named Chris Christie).
< snip>
But Cain seems destined to squander it. And heres why.
As NBCs thoughtful First Read points out this morning, Cain's promoting a book - and appears to be taking himself off the campaign trail for almost a month.
Cain wont be back in the key state of Iowa until November. With all of the jiggering of the Republican primary calendar, that means hell have six weeks (at best) to pound the trail before the Iowa caucuses in early January.
Perhaps equally telling, Cain's well-regarded communications director and her deputy are both leaving the campaign, with the director headed to run press operations for Louisiana Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne in a tough primary election. Thats not exactly a vote of confidence in Cains presidential prospects.

When you peel off the campaign trail for four weeks in the heat of the fight, it raises questions about just what the heck a candidate is doing in the race anyway. ....
< snip>
When you take yourself off the campaign trail just to flog a book, it raises the question: Why are you still around, Herman Cain? And whats the real motive behind this run?

Which also means don’t rule out a Sarah Palin bid, even though Polly thinks Palin is only a tease.
We would be in the same boat with Perry. We have got to stop all of the political insiders this year or we are finished. Someone like SP or Cain is what we need right now.
Business as usual is going to be the end of this fine nation of ours. We are on the brink and unless we change course hard right now were done for. The country is ready to elect a strong conservative leader. We may not have another chance like this...why settle for Perry or Romney or Christie types? Why?
The thing is, promoting a book gets him on the tv and radio stations. It gets him interviews. It brings money into his campaign. Promoting a book about him as a president, would be part of a campaign, not leaving the campaign.
They act like he’s just putting the whole campaign on the back burner. And THAT is a bald-faced lie.
Because Rick Perry's people are getting desperate.
Someone very near and dear to me works for the Cain campaign here in Tennessee.
I can assure you he is not leaving the campaign trail. In fact, he has a bus Tour across Tennessee scheduled for Oct. 14-15.
These are rallies, not book signings.

His campaign calendar is full and he is not, as this article erroneously suggests, leaving the campaign trail.
Look at the source.. The Christian Science Monitor (liberal rag) quoting NBC, citing a blog that is speculating...
I thought we had more media discernment than this here?
Agreed, I see nothing from Cain saying this, shenanigans, I declare shenanigans!
Nobama has the entire nation up in arms. Free Republic is no different. I don’t know what to expect at this point.
Romney is the winner, right?

WTH are you talking about? The truth of the next 24 hours will show the absolute idiocy of this article and this post. Just sit back and be shamed.
Don’t give up so quickly... This whole situation stinks to high heaven of political operatives trying to take out both Cain and Perry - and like you said the one who benefits? Romney and the GOP establishment. Is it any wonder why the media is all of a sudden turning against Obama, and is trying so hard to make mountains out of molehills between the other candidates? I also don’t see ANY Romney supporters on any of these threads weighing in with their thoughts on the whole matter...
Like I said, and maybe it’s just me, but this whole thing stinks of a planned attack designed to whittle down the field. I think Cain’s popularity caught them off-guard (because they really are that out of touch w/real Americans - the GOP and the DNC), and now that some of the primary dates are being moved up people are starting to get scared... I wish there were some way to get people to understand this and NOT take the bait!
(end rant — sorry... it’s not directed at you personally hoagy62, I’m just disappointed that this is happening again.)
Exactly.
This is pretty obviously a coordinated effort to create doubt and bring down Cain. It is very “Alinsky”
In the real world he is doing just fine. I assume most people on FR are smart enough to see through this garbage.

I disagree that Iowa is not important. Cain is the unknown underdog and he is picking up momentum. He cannot put himself in position to give it up.
With NH all but guaranteed for Romney, a poor showing by Cain in Iowa might be a blow from which his campaign would not recover.
If that happened, the “chatter” about how “everyone knew Cain couldn’t win” would destroy him.
Of course it’s a ridiculous article but he’s a longshot candidate threatening an establishment that doesn’t fight fair when frightened.
Are you, in fact, “david Grant”?
Big time.
The establishment is going to lose. Credit Obama.
Wow. A complete lie posted as news. The admins should pull this thread.
