Herman Cain leaving the campaign trail: Why now?

Herman Cain leaving the campaign trail: Why now?

Herman Cain is surging in popularity in a number of polls. So why is Herman Cain putting his campaign on hold for the next month?

The Hermantor Experience is, by almost any measure, the hottest thing going in the GOP presidential primary (not named Chris Christie).

< snip>

But Cain seems destined to squander it. And here’s why.

As NBC’s thoughtful First Read points out this morning, Cain's promoting a book - and appears to be taking himself off the campaign trail for almost a month.

Cain won’t be back in the key state of Iowa until November. With all of the jiggering of the Republican primary calendar, that means he’ll have six weeks (at best) to pound the trail before the Iowa caucuses in early January.

Perhaps equally telling, Cain's well-regarded communications director and her deputy are both leaving the campaign, with the director headed to… run press operations for Louisiana Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne in a tough primary election. That’s not exactly a vote of confidence in Cain’s presidential prospects.

< snip>

When you peel off the campaign trail for four weeks in the heat of the fight, it raises questions about just what the heck a candidate is doing in the race anyway. ....

< snip>

When you take yourself off the campaign trail just to flog a book, it raises the question: Why are you still around, Herman Cain? And what’s the real motive behind this run?

No apology necessary, but you are certainly showing class by offering one, especially considering my snarky behavior tonight! LOL

Thanks.

More media bias evidenced by this article. Herman was on Hannity earlier tonight and said he was doing a book tour. The man CAN walk and chew gum at the same time. We all know that candidates often time their book coming-out as a campaign aid. He’ll make this a plus all along the way, count on it. Now’s the right time to raise public awareness of who he is - tonight, Sean said he’d known Herman for something like 16 years, and he still learned many things he’d never known about him, from reading the book.

This CSM “reporter” also joined other biased writers in saying HC’s communications director is leaving, in such a way as to suggest mutiny. They parted on mutually cordial terms, she had many nice words to say about him, AND he’s replacing the young lady (who was only a couple of years out of college) with a former press secretary/spokesman of Donald Rumsfeld. In my opinion, a very smart upgrade :-)

Yep, Herman just won a second straw poll (of Republican women), so the media smears are now underway.

“He’s supposed to be on Hannity in a few.... who wrote this crap?”

I know - the CSM used to be a respected publication. But (imho) it’s turned into another rag.

“So did a lot of us when faced with a McQueeg candidacy. At that point, there was no other option.”

Exactly right. I was one as well and I fess up to it.

You put your name on a post that indicates Cain is leaving the campaign to sell a book. That is patently and demonstrably false. The book is about his “RUN TO THE WHITE HOUSE” - therefore it is demonstrably a part of his campaign. Selling a book is a great way to fund raise for a campaign.

It is valid to question this strategy. But it is plain foolish to blindly claim that he is “leaving the campaign” because of some google searches.

Well, I guess it has been confirmed beyond a shadow of a doubt that Herman Cain has officially "suspended his campaign" (sic) and is out there now wasting his time over his book, /sarc/giggle/guffaw:

This just in from CBS News in Georgia today:

"MILTON, GA (CBS ATLANTA) - Herman Cain organizers say more than 3,000 people showed up for his book signing in Milton on Sunday. It was a much larger crowd than they anticipated. Georgia businessman Herman Cain has emerged as a viable candidate in the crowded field of GOP contenders. He spent the day talking to supporters as he signed copies of "This is Herman Cain." Weeks ago many analyst believed Cain would not stand a chance against Gov. Rick Perry and former governor Mitt Romney, but his straw poll victory in Florida last month changed all of that. Cain called his straw poll victory in a game-changer. "We welcome all of this new found support. Welcome aboard the Cain train!" Cain said. Cain spoke about the economic problems facing Americans and pushed his solution, his 9-9-9 plan. "It starts with throwing out the current tax code 9% business flat tax, 9% personal income flat tax and 9% national sales tax," Cain said. He also took jabs at President Obama and his administration. "I have been criticized for not having extensive foreign policy experience, well does the guy we have now have a lot of foreign policy experience?" Cain said. His message resonated with supporters who waited in line for hours for a copy of his book. "I think he's got a really strong message for everyone, everyone is hurting, having such a positive message for us, I think is a wonderful thing," Simone McCleary said. "I'm a big strong Herman Cain supporter because I believe it's time to take back America," Jim Boyd said "

What a joke of a comment.

A majority of FR supported Romney over McCain

Must've been before the purge. FreeRepublic as I recall didn't support Romney.

YEP! When it came down to McCain, Huckabee and Romney back in Jan-Feb 2008, there were some good thread battles between Huckabee and Romney but NO support for McCain.

In the next month, is Cain going to be engaged in serious courting of the major donors required to succeed in a serious campaign or is he going to be courting book buyers to cash in on book sales?

Really? You accuse of offering nothing but emotions and then post this? A book tour can draw up PLENTY OF MEDIA ATTENTION! And what do you need to win an election? MEDIA ATTENTION!

It says he doesn’t support him to become the nominee at this time.

Bingo!!! And furthermore, why would ANY candidate announce support for another candidate when they are running AGAINST them?

You are wasting perfectly good cyber-ink, CEW. IMHO, Poly has no interest in accuracy. His mission appears to be purely one of detraction and demoralization directed at whichever Republican candidate is the current focus of conservative attention. I have tried asking him who he is for, with no response. Something peculiar about the whole thing. IMHO.

You may be right — my interest lies less in people and particular candidates than it does the sheer idiocy of the article and some of this thread. It just grates on me.

The first 9 is corporate tax, and I think that at that rate , it's much higher than their current tax on profits only

Don't think so. Lowest is 15% - Corporate Income Tax Rates

The second 9 is personal flatrate income tax, and that is much higher than what is (or is not) paid by the poorest citizens.

Nope. Lowest Tax Bracket is 10% - Official 2011 US Income Tax Brackets (IRS Tax Rates)

Overall, all three of those taxes add up to about 35.25%.

You may want to calculate your current total tax burden for direct comparison. The 9-9-9 eliminates your current payroll tax burden. So, just adding up the minimums of each category - 10% + 15% + your 8.25% + 4.2% payroll = 37.45%

I think that the lowest bracket is about minus 3%. Forty plus percent of the lowest earneers pay $0, and that's zero percent the way I figure it, with some actually recieving money back, up to negative 3%.

I'm retired, and I don't pay that 4.2% payroll tax.

” It gets him interviews. It brings money into his campaign. Promoting a book about him as a president, would be part of a campaign, not leaving the campaign.”

Exactly. A couple of pundits said that what he does with this new bump will be critical to his future success, that he needs to maximize it in the brief timeframe this wave lasts.

I think his timing of this book tour (with the intense media exposure) is brilliant.

I just saw him do a great interview with Greg on Red Eye. He’s getting better, more confident and polished all the time. Someone earlier today said that success agrees with him - it’s amazing how much he’s now being mentioned and discussed on virtually every show. He was even on the View today - and he handled those b****es masterfully :-)

“Paul typically 2nd best, there’s a large group below those 2 that perform similarly...”

Why the h*** should RP “typically” finish this high? It’s suspect and ludicrous.

“Ron Paul is very strong with Independents, especially young male independents.”

That should read “especially young male DEPENDENTS”.
