His aides believe that his decade of experience as a border-state governor bolsters his credibility on immigration and border security.
He said he vetoed a Texas bill that would have given illegal immigrants driver's licenses, helped pass a bill requiring voter identification at the polls, spent $400 million on security measures to help secure the stateâs border with Mexico, and strongly opposed granting amnesty to people who illegally entered the United States.
"I'm a governor. I don't have the pleasure of standing on the stage and criticizing," Perry said. "I have to deal with these issues."

This is not a two man race.
Perry is partially if not almost entirely responsible for the illegals in his state for the last 10 years.
The federal government is responsible for border security, but states can make it less hospitable for illegals, and Texas has been a hospitable state for illegals under both Bush and Perry, which is why it has massive amounts of illegals in the state and has turned the demographics of the state upside down.
Texas is more like California than it is like Arizona.
And the reason illegals love California is because California liberals have the welcome mat open for them.
If California was more like Arizona, it wouldn’t be as bad as it is now, same goes for Texas.
I don’t trust Perry on illegals. I think his instincts are to be like Bush and McCain, which is to supplicate to Mexicans and their illegal invasion.
I bet Perry’s first major policy push would be for amnesty.
I don’t say this because I hate Perry, but his record speaks for itself.
If we are going to elect another Bush like candidate for amnesty, we might as well elect Jeb, at least he is smart and can communicate in complete sentences.
I don’t think Slick Rick would enjoy it very much.
Then of course, there's this gem about the number of illegals getting in state tuition in Texas... guess what? It's rising too. Read the details closely and you'll find the are 'eligible for state aid', which is a fancy way of saying supporting illegals with taxpayer money.
You don't get rid of ants by spreading sugar, plain and simple.
Why don’t you ask your boy what the difference is between calling border fences ‘silly’, as he did in October 2009 in a debate with KBH versus his sudden support for ‘strategic border fences’.
You raise an interesting point. I would agree with you that the "patrician class" part of his character stopped him from aggressively pursuing solutions to illegal immigration, social security, and fannie/freddie. He did propose solutions to all these things and then backed off.
There's no reason to believe that Perry will be any different. He's against almost every effective measure to solve the problem, although he does talk a good game, just like Bush.
This is where being a "right fighter" and having absolute litmus tests gets in the way of getting solutions to problems. There are a couple key differences between Perry and Bush. Whereas Bush grew up in an elite environment Perry did not. Bush attended northeast prep schools and then an ivy league college. Perry did not. Environment does play a role in the development of a persons personality. I believe Perry is a bit tougher.
As far as the educating of illegals children I believe Perry did the right thing.
You wont’ believe how many people that ‘heartless’ comment has pissed off. Even the guy who owns the car wash I go to this morning made a sarcastic remark about him being ‘heartless’.
He pamders...as do most Texas pols looks like
I’m done with them for the near future
So am I. This country is in big trouble if it elects another illegal alien enabler. Perry talks a good phony game about "boots on the ground", which is why I pray he does not BS his way into the WH like Bush did.
While Perry has a less then ideal stance on immigration, the issue of illegal border crossings is being demagogue by creeps like Willard and the hordes of malcontents slinking around.
But he'll give you in-state tuition!
helped pass a bill requiring voter identification at the polls,
So you can be college-educated, with no voting rights, and no ability to drive to work... to a job you shouldn't have as an illegal immigrant!
spent $400 million on security measures to help secure the stateâs border with Mexico,
While enticing more illegal immigrants with... in-state tuition!
and strongly opposed granting amnesty to people who illegally entered the United States.
No amnesty, but you can go to college, with in-state tuition!
Perry claims his "Texas Dream Act" is not the same as the "Federal Dream Act" because it's a "states rights issue" for Texas.
Then Perry turns around and says Mitt Romney's "Massachussetts Health Care" is the same as the "Federal Health Care" and has nothing to do with states rights. The Texas two-step us dumb Yankees just don't git?
Heaven help us if he's the nominee. Cain is so happy to be the anti-candidate that he speaks without thinking how his words will be used against him. He's attractive now, but when people start thinking about who our next POTUS will be do they really want someone who says "I don't know a lot about foreign policy", "I support the 2nd Amendment, but states should be able to restrict it", "I'm Pro-Life but I won't sign a pledge stating that".
Cain plays right into obama's hands. He makes obama look like he's experienced and competent.
The reason for the increase in illegal immigrants in Texas is largely due to the fact that there are more jobs in Texas. The decline in illegal aliens in the other states is largely due to the fact that the other states have been losing jobs.
Using your logic you could say that Obama has done more to stem the tide of illegal aliens than any other president since Carter, since he has managed to keep the unemployment levels at near double digit numbers nationwide since he took office.
The guy is almost on par with Romney and Kerry when it comes to flip flops.
Actually in 2010 a study reported by a news outlet posted illegal immigration was down in all states that so border, but Texas.
Texas Moves to Crack Down on Cities Protecting Illegal
Immigrants
Published May 10, 2011
The vote came on the eve of Obama's first trip as president to the U.S.-Mexico border, where he planned to continue his recent push to revive legislative efforts to remake the nation's immigration laws....In the absence of a sweeping national law, many statehouses have taken immigration matters into their own hands.
Other states are not widely effected as the border states will illegal immigraion.
We say no to illegal immigrants, yet we help them stay... Americans want to stop illegal immigration. Yet we happy to benefit from low prices for groceries, cheap yardwork and housecleaning services.
Government interference stops states from acting in their own best interests on immigration [see Arizona] as well as the "wants" and "needs" of the well to do in America.
2003 was a different time in Texas when it came to the problem of Illegal immigration. The Democrats and like thinking politicians on the Right have dangled the carrot, and with the matricular consular card, approval of dual citizenship by Mexico..more and more came.
Bureaucratic red tape.
“You wont believe how many people that heartless comment has pissed off.”
Oh yes I would believe it. I was a Perry supporter. On the ping list and everything. Then he opened his mouth to attack Romney and George W Bush popped out (er...uh... before before....against). Then he opened his mouth again to defend his in-state tuition fiasco. Bush popped out again (vigilantes). Lindsay Graham as well (bigots). And lets not forget John McCain (lazy).
I stopped supporting Perry right then. I hope he loses the nomination so that the big-business, illegal loving bastards in the GOP establishment once again get the memo; WE’RE DONE supporting open-borders, amnesty POS politicians that spend more time attacking (us) the base than attacking the Democrats and illegal aliens.
And to blame the rise of illegals in Texas on more jobs? Wow, way to 'rationalize' criminal behavior. Yet, Perry did nothing to discourage illegals from coming.
I never thought I'd see the day when a freeper would rationalize and excuse illegal immigration.
