Obama dismisses claims of racial slur on ‘slippers’
Not stereotyping, White House says

Facing an uproar from President Obama’s most loyal base of supporters, the White House on Thursday rejected claims that Mr. Obama stereotyped blacks when he told them to “take off your bedroom slippers” and work for his re-election.
“I have heard him make similar comments to all sorts of different groups,” said presidential press secretary Jay Carney, who fielded nearly a dozen questions from the White House press corps about Mr. Obama’s comments and his relationship with black supporters. “He’s certainly used vivid language, similarly vivid language, before a variety of audiences.”
But a search of Mr. Obama’s speeches dating back to mid-May shows that he has used the quip about bedroom slippers only one other time — on Sept. 14 at North Carolina State University, while promoting his jobs bill. About 8 percent of students at N.C. State are black.
The president stirred up the issue when he urged the predominantly black audience at the annual Congressional Black Caucus Foundation awards dinner in Washington on Saturday to stop criticizing him and get to work on his re-election.

At the risk of being labled “racist,” I will confirm that some African Americans do wear slippers in public. I have seen several young African American women wearing slippers, mainly at malls. It is a type of fashion. My wife, a public school teacher, told me that it got to be so common that the schools had to ban the practice. And some in the African American community do not like the fashion - can’t say that I blame them. Maybe that was what Obama was actually refering to and what some took offense to - airing the African Community’s own “problems” in public.
Yes, but liberal media and Obama himself claim that it's impossible for Obama to be accused of stereotyping black Americans since he himself is a black American. My point is that Obama is not of their culture or background. In fact, his ancestors actually owned them.
His black dialect is as fake as Hillary's.

The suggestion from the former CEO of Godfather's Pizza came in an exchange about why the GOP hopeful doesn't consider himself an African American.
"I am an American. Black. Conservative," he said in explaining his view on the matter. "I don’t use African American, because I’m American, I’m black and I’m conservative. I don’t like people trying to label me. African American is socially acceptable for some people, but I am not some people."
Cain said that he considers himself to be "a black man in America" and feels stronger ties to the United States than to Africa. He suggested his perspective has been informed by the fact that he can trace most of his ancestors to the U.S. and it also "goes back to slavery."

In “black speak”, “slippers” means rubbers or condoms.

You must be really young. Of course it us a racist stereotype - remember James Watt, Reagan’s Secretary of the Interior who was hounded from office for saying blacks are fine as long as they have comfortable shoes and a warm place to take a crap.

ROFL - this reminds me of my youth.
1 day I somehow forgot I was still wearing slippers well after I got on the bus. Being a teenage girl, I was majorly embarrassed (in that time, I guess, doing such a thing was no fashion). I was practically hysterical when I got to school and insisted the office call my mother (she happened to head the “special” school affiliated with my high school) to have her take me to get my proper shoes! Well, she wouldn’t do it (I guess she figured as the head admin and a teacher she was not going to disrupt things for stupid slippers), but her secretary did come and take me home!
How pathetic. I probably could’ve lived with it, but being 15 I guess I had to be melodramatic about it!
I don’t remember that controversy.
Years ago, I occasionally visited the office of a woman who was extremely high in a local government agency. Sometimes I had business with her, sometimes I stopped by to say hello after meeting with others in that building. She was black. So was her secretary, who had a cubicle nearby. The secretary invariably wore bedroom slippers at work. I don’t know if she had foot problems or was merely sloppy, but I thought it appropriate — particularly since her boss had many important visitors (infinitely more important than I), not only from outside that agency but also from all over the country and sometimes from other countries.
This same local government agency had a problem with staff (of whatever races/ethnicities) dressing inappropriately. As far as footgear went, they prohibited sandals (which from what I could see, most of the staff seemed to ignore) and also flip-flops (I don’t know if that policy was followed or not). Nothing was ever said about bedroom slippers, and the secretary continued to wear hers at work.

I grew up in the South. This IS racial.
AA’s who worked for ‘white folks’ stood on their feet all day and had to walk home (because of the busing restrictions). Slippers relieved the foot pain when they got home.
Also.....when growing up....going to “the Pig”.....slippers and curlers were worn out in the open when shopping. It almost seemed like the ‘fashion’ at the time.
