Thomas Sowell: Attacks on Perry unwarranted, unwise
Standard Times San Angelo ^ | Sept. 27, 2011 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 09/27/2011 3:14:20 PM PDT by Clairity

The biggest mischaracterization of Perry's position has been on immigration. The fact that he has more confidence in putting "boots on the ground" along the border, instead of relying on a fence that can be climbed over or tunneled under where there is no one around, is a logistical judgment, not a question of being against border control.

Texas Rangers already have been put along the border to guard the places where the federal government has failed to guard it. Former Sen. Rick Santorum's sound-bite attempts to paint Perry as soft on border control have apparently been politically successful, judging by polls.

But his repeated interrupting of Perry's presentation of his case during the recent debate is the kind of cheap political trick that contributes nothing to public understanding and much to public misunderstanding.

I have far more questions about those who would blow this error up into something that it is not. Error-free leaders don't exist — and we don't want to end up settling for a warm body.

Ultimately, this is not about Perry. It is about a process that can destroy any potential leader, even when the country needs a new leader with a character that the "gotcha" attackers demonstrate they do not have.

What the Texas legislature is saying is, they are here, and there is nothing we can do about it, since it is up to the Feds to deport them.
So they made the decision that further education and vaccines to prevent epidemics, was in the general interest of Texas taxpayers at large, because ignoring the matters increased fiscal burdens on the state.

They did not do these thing off the top off there heads or hearts.
Greg Abbott has sued the Feds over many of these cost in an effort to call the Fed to action on what is their responsibility.

LOL!

Did you see where Michael Reagan said that RR wouldn't be conservative enough these days for some Repubs?

Norm, here in Arizona we have one of the most effective sheriffs in the country. He picks up illegals almost every day and the feds just turn them loose. We've tried holding them, we've tried taking them to the border, we've tried everything, and they are back the next day.

Unless and until we get someone in office who will enforce the laws states will continue to be stuck with the costs of these people. Texas isn't educating, they are allowing them to purchase their education at the in-state rate because for 3 years they have been paying property tax (through their rent) and sales tax (on everything they buy). But they STILL have to pay their own tuition.

>> “Gardasil was another of Perry’s mistakes, but I believe it was made with the best of intentions, and not due to corruption.” <<

.
As PT Barnum said, there’s one born every minute.

The Gardasil EO was all corruption. He received $30,000 in direct contributions, and the millions of dollars of political advertising of the Pharma Giants, all of it criminal.

I come across as hardcore on this but I really want people to actually do research into this stuff and educate themselves, not take my word for it.

Most of us here are on the same team at the end of the day, but we ALL have to think critically about these matters. Basic “If A then B” stuff. And the emotional aspects of it cannot be considered if we want a real working solution. Nor can we play favorites with our preferred politicians.

If Palin came out with Perry’s position, I’d rail her just as hard as I am Perry. Because I have done my homework and thought critically about it. I wish all would do likewise, then let the cards fall where they may. But taking any Pol at face value is suicide for the conservative cause. Words and actions have reactions and consequences.

Who is paying for all of this stuff?
You expect Texans to pay for it?
Perry is the Governor of Texas at the moment.

If he were President he could address the Federal matters directly.

Sowell is a life long Libertarian, and all libertarians are dead wrong on immigration.

The TXL can easily write laws stopping benefits to illegals and criminalizing their hire.

Do you disagree? If so why?

Texas is allowing their education and passing laws that make it easier for them. That benefits illegals and their presence in schools costs tax dollars

Do you deny that? If so, how?

If Joe’s methods were employed across the border states, people would understand the depth of the Fed problem far better.

Joe does the job we hired him for. That’s all he can do RIGHT NOW.

Any reason in particular you refuse to answer the many points I have made so far and just keep asking questions of your own?

LOL, that's exactly what we did here in Arizona. They're still coming through by the thousands. Unless and until the FEDERAL legislature does something we're all stuck with them.

A Supreme Court ruling is what started all this trouble. Before that we could simply refuse to educate or medicate them.

And which of those states is right for doing so?

They are helping illegals. If you support that, so are you.

Strongly disagree.

I think people that hate him in the first place are condemning him on the flimsiest of circumstantial evidence.

They can, but they didn’t, and the bill passed with only 4 dissenting votes.
Perry couldn’t veto it if he tried.
