New Poll Shows Obama Approval Slips to Historic Low (36%)
The Hill ^ | Saturday, September 24, 2011 | Justin Sink

President Barack Obama's approval ratings have fallen to a new low, with only 36 percent of Americans saying that they approve of the way he is handling his job overall, according to a new poll from the Economist/YouGov. A majority of Americans - 56 percent - disapprove of the president's performance.

Even more concerning for the president may be the news that top Republican candidates have moved within striking distance in head-to-head matchups. Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney trails Obama by just a 44 percent to 43 percent margin, while Texas governor Rick Perry trails 46 percent to 42 percent.

As has been the case in previous polls showing the president's slipping approval, Americans seem frustrated primarily in a souring economy. Only 30 percent of Americans strongly or somewhat approve of the president's handling of the issue. 50 percent of Americans believe that the policies of the Obama Administration have hurt the economy, and 53 percent say that they have hurt the middle class.

The Economist/YouGov poll surveyed 1000 respondents with a margin of error of 3.7 percent.

He can retreat to Martha’s Vinyard and work on plans for his presidential library there.

The 36% is astounding, considering the MSM is STILL 100% behind him in all their reporting.

These are unusual times and to judge from the people I talk to they are not happy. Go to get food or gas and talk, the discontent is apparent.

Believe it or not GW Bush had a 22% approval rating from Gallup just prior to leaving office.

I wonder what a GWB Gallup approval rating would be today.

Cain/Rubio IMHO are UNBEATABLE. Both come from humble beginnings. Both have little to no baggage. Both are amazingly articulate honest focused and speak from their heart. We have got to stop the MSM train of Romney Perry. All Cain needs is face time and money. Heaven equals an Obama Cain debate. Can you imagine a debate between Biden and Rubio ?

On the really critical issues the President can quickly act on - Biden as President would be much more willing to pull back the regulatory agencies and take some of the economic pressure off, and very likely won’t be such a roadblock on the budget compromise in 2012.

Based on what? Are you totally oblivious to Biden's own statements and voting record? Do you think he was voted VP because that was the name drawn out of a DNC hat?

Are you really going to try to sell the idea that Barry was a micro-manager given all of the vacations, trips and golf outings?

Empirical evidence is quite opposite of your imagined hopes and dreams of Biden as Reagan II.

...and he richly deserved it!

Whenever Big Gov’t liberal Republicans (Bushes, Nixon) get labeled “Conservative” it does incalculable damage to the Libertarian-Conservative, small government movement.

Given that Bush had all the opposite of this, it's a wonder Obama is actually as low as 36%.

That's a VERY good point, AB. And considering the source, a 36% disapproval rate in "The Hill" would likely be equivalent to a 26% approval rate in any conservative source on the Internet.

...and if that’s the case, I sure hope the GOP has the right people running and a plan to match with that opportunity. If their plan is to repeat the Dubya years, they will soon find themselves in Obama’s position now.

I don’t think this poll artificially inflates the approval of Obama. There really are that many people that don’t understand how he has destroyed this country from foreign policy to economics to culture, to the military, to intelligence, to the environment to everything else. They don’t understand how anything works, to they still believe what they believe.

The sadness of this poll is that so many approve of this destructive force, and all in his administration who view their role in life as taking from some to give to themselves, rather than producing something of their own.

You are absolutely right! It’s disgusting and disturbing.

0bama will not run for re-election.

Big Government can be likened to a theater for politicians who, in order to keep their lucrative parts in the ongoing performances, will make sure that the theater stays in business so they have a stage to perform on. Many Republicans are creatures of this system and they love performing before an audience. If they didn’t perpetuate this play, what else would those politicians be doing? That is the dirty little secret in Washington: politicians hate the thought of having to work real jobs so they will do or say anything to stay in DC. Unfortunately for the rest of us, Big Government fosters little citizens.

I don’t see why people constantly shy away from comparing Obama to Hitler: He’s for killing just as many people. If Obama had his way, there would be at least twice as many abortions as there are now.

I agree with you 100%!!! As a student of the history of tyrants, dictators throughout, Obama ranks with the worst of them. First he is a Jew hater. Second, he is standing by, keeping that African Muslim yap of his silent, while thousands of North African Black Christians are jailed, tortured and murdered in Libya and through North Africa by “his” “Muslim Brotherhood” brethren!!! Third, he is putting America in harms ways by destroying the USA economy, defunding the military and making the USA and our office of POTUS, the laughing stock of the entire world!!! Hate to say it, but.....Americans are really not too bright!!! Washington, Lincoln and Reagan must be turning in their graves crying!!!

He’s lower than Dubya on the worst day of his political life. He’s lower than Nixon after Watergate. He’s not low enough yet, though.
