After three debates, the consensus among conservative commentators is that GOP frontrunner Rick Perry is getting worse, not better. That's good news for Mitt Romney, who has been closing the gap with Perry in recent days. Intrade now sees the ex-Massachusetts governor as the most likely Republican nominee.
But its also good for Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator. He now may emerge from the long list of second-tier candidates.
Romney should be an easy target.

I wish he'd stop answering the "what Perry's done wrong" questions and say, instead, flat out say what he'd do. Taking the press's premise only helps their choice of Romney; he could learn from Newt or Cain. He also gets more social issue questions, all designed to make him appear "extreme."
Perry needs to get into debate prep or get out now. His in-articulation is baffling and it's only helping Romney.
How did you feel about GW twisting Santorum’s arm in that election? Spector was a liar through and through yet GW made a deal with him.
Ditto for me. I was leaning Perry’s way until last night and he repeated that immigrattion stand one time too many. I cannot get past that. I like Bachmann but I don’t think she can win. A Gingrich/Cain ticket would not be a bad idea.
Well one way is to let a Compassionate Conservative twist your arm until you yell uncle. You know one like GW or Rick.
Of course we do, his position on immigration has no bearing on that, us being Heartless and all.
I will predict now that none of the nine will be on the ballot against Obama, at least not at the top of the ticket.
I said what I said and I am sticking by it.
Besides the border is not private property.
Gee I don't know? Has a giant wall ever been built before, naw probably not. We had just as well try to go to the moon, everyone knows that is impossible.
I doubt it. I don't know exactly what he said because I have seen only paraphrase. I'd like to know too.
Yes we should have just let those Germans alone, after all it was Japan that attacked us.</sarcasm>
So smartass, tell me. Where else in the world has a giant wall been built along 1500 miles of riverbank? Hmm?
She would be gaining debating skills. I have noticed great debating improvements among most of the candidates with each debate. It won't look good to come in so green that the others look better than you because they've been sharpening their debating skills.
If Palin were to be the nominee, I would gladly vote for her. Lord knows that wasn't the case in 2008 with the head of the ticket. If she had not been on that ticket, I probably would have written in somebody.
Perry's performances in the debates has been frustrating at times. I sat and listened to his call with Hannity earlier and kept saying "why couldn't you have talked like this in the debate?" Hannity challenged him, and he did very well. Now, granted, he wasn't limited to 30-60 seconds, but he was very clear in his answers.
He's great at one on one interviews, on the campaign trail, and taking questions from the audience. He just needs some polishing on the debate setting to get the answers to very complex issues (i.e., people wanting to build a wall in the middle of the Rio Grande River) down to 60 seconds.
Not that I really want to argue the point, but Congress did offer up a Declaration of War against Germany and WWII was funded by US War Bonds as well as other revenue measures. I don’t have a problem fighting, especially the Muslim bastards that would see us dead. I just wish we would let the military do their job, get in, kick ass, and get the crap out. Sorry you read way more into my little rant than I put there.
Why, pray-tell, is the federal government threatening eminent domain action against the property owners down there if they don't grant a ROW/Easement for a wall?
Also, what is to happen to the access these ranchers/farmers have to the Rio Grande River?
Noooooooo. I kinda liked Santorum until last night.
What a disaster. Hectoring, hysterical... he did the old Michele Bachman leap into the abyss with his unbecoming rants against Perry.
I began to wonder if someone paid him, like maybe Romney.
And he looked awful too. Omigosh, I can’t even believe the title of this thread.
I totally agree abut Santorum. His performance was cringe-making.
But I did like Huntsman better. Actually agreed with him about troops in the middle east.
You’re exactly right about Perry.
Those dog and pony shows run by the networks for ratings are not favorable to very many candidates... maybe a slickster like Romney who has no problem saying anything he thinks people want to hear.
Perry is a Texan and we talk a little slower. He would shine more in a different forum with more time to explain some of his less popular stands.
He’s still my favorite in the current field.
“But I did like Huntsman better. Actually agreed with him about troops in the middle east.”
I think Cain did just as well and will rise further than Santorum will before this is all over.
