Hoyer: Republicans would see country fail to defeat Obama's reelection bid By Mike Lillis - 09/20/11 01:31 PM ET
Republicans would rather see the country collapse than President Obama succeed, the second-ranking House Democrat charged Tuesday.
Rep. Steny Hoyer (Md.), the Democratic whip, said the GOP's near-blanket opposition to Obama's policy proposals is evidence that many Republicans have adopted the sentiment articulated most clearly by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) that their top priority is making Obama a one-term president.
"The leader in the Senate said his principal objective is to defeat Barack Obama, and therefore and this is important what follows is that America needs to fail over the next 14 months," Hoyer told reporters at the Capitol.
"Because if America succeeds, if jobs are created, if the economy starts growing, then some would believe that it would be to the political benefit of Barack Obama and the Democrats.
"For those folks, apparently partisanship has been promoted over cooperation or progress," Hoyer added.
Last October, McConnell raised eyebrows when he said his chief goal as Republican leader is not job creation, deficit reduction or strengthening the struggling housing market, but creating a political environment in which a Republican would win the White House next November.
"The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president," McConnell told National Journal.
The remark drew criticism even from some Republicans who accused McConnell and the GOP of "sabotaging" Congress to make it appear dysfunctional in the eyes of voters.
"By sabotaging the reputation of an institution of government, the party that is programmatically against government would come out the relative winner," Mike Lofgren, who served 16 years as a GOP aide to the House and Senate Budget committees before retiring in June, wrote this month in an online essay condemning the Republican tactics.
"Evidently Senator McConnell hates Obama more than he loves his country."
Last year, McConnell drew similar scrutiny when he helped kill a deficit-reduction bill, a proposal he'd previously characterized as the best way to address the [budget] crisis, after Obama endorsed it.
Hoyer on Tuesday took Republicans to task for demanding, as part of their recently issued continuing resolution, that emergency funding for natural disaster aid be offset by cuts to another program in the budget.
"Eight times under [President] George [W.] Bush, we responded to hurricanes, floods, earthquakes, other disasters, fires, and we did so by emergency funding," Hoyer said. "The Republicans supported President Bush's request for that, [and] we think they ought to support President Obama's request for that."
Hoyer also went after Republicans for running up trillions of dollars in debt when they controlled Congress and the White House but suddenly becoming fiscal hawks since the Democrats took over. The Democratic whip suggested the current downturn is a hangover from GOPs policies under Bush.
"Notwithstanding the fact that the economic policy was totally controlled by Republicans in the first ... eight years of the decade, at the end of their economic program over which they had total control, we are faced with the deepest recession since the Great Depression," Hoyer said.
Still, despite all his criticisms of Republicans, Hoyer said he remains optimistic that the two parties can forge an agreement this fall on sweeping legislation to create jobs and rein in deficit spending.
"We are still at a point where we can reach compromise," Hoyer said.
Hoyer is SUCH a putz. Perfect for the People’s Republic of Maryland, though.
As Rush has said over and over, the country wins when 0bama fails.
Let rephrase this correctly: “Rep. Steny Hoyer (Md.), the Democratic whip, would rather Obama take the country down then vote against him”
Too late for that....the Democrats did that in spades from 2008-2011, and now you want to blame the other side?
What a dumbass. Of course, the D constituency (made up of welfare queens and daddies, criminals, faggots and dykes, and tree huggers) don't care about what is the American way of life; we need PROGRESSIVE CHANGE (wealth-redistribution, penalties for success, and equal misery all around).
Guess this will be their excuse for Obama’s failure as a President. We willed him to loose. Heavy stuff.
He controlled the House AND Senate for TWO years and did NOTHING to help the economy. All he did was screw older Americans and lot of others with his bogus health care bill.
Dr. Kavorkian in Presidential garb. First seniors, then the economy get his treatment.
I would like to see the transition to a communist/socialist government with unlimited power fail. That’s because I’m an American and I love this country. It’s not just possible to be pro-America and anti-Obama, it’s impossible to love this country and also support Obama.
Democrats wants to see the country fail. They need Obama to be reelected to finish the job he started; complete defeat of this country.
If Obama “succeeds”, the country fails. Conversely, if Obama fails, the country succeeds. Therefore, the only way to have the country succeed is for Obama to fail.
Mister Hoyer, the country is already failing BECAUSE of Obama you moron!
Might've worked three years ago but most of the country now equates Obama with miserable failure.
He’s a POS alright.. just like Obama and my tag line could be used perfectly here in Maryland.
a.The attribution of one's own attitudes, feelings, or suppositions to others.
To a modern day Democrat, political power trumps everything else. Democrats are using a failed ideology in terms of repairing an economy. Yet, their only answer for their failures is to do more of the same.
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results".
Albert Einstein
If the Democrat Party were truly interested in improving the economy, they are the ones who should be compromising....with the American People.
Steny! Steny! Steny! Come up for air! Which party hasn’t event submitted a budget for two years or more? Which president submitted a budget that ALL members of the Senate voted against (that would include Democrats)? Which party controlled both houses and the White House for two years but didn’t do anything to strengthen the economy? Who has proposed numerous ideas to perk up the economy (hint: Paul Ryan is one) but Democrats never give them a chance. Steny, your ridiculous babbling isn’t working. The people are much smarter than you.
