USAT/Gallup: Perry 31,Romney 24, Paul 13,Bachmann/Gingrich/Cain 5

Link only to RCP - cannot link to USA Today. This poll was conducted after the last debate. Last poll by USA Today/Gallup in early August (before Perry announced) showed Romney 24, Perry 17, Bachmann 13. A Gallup-only pull in mid-August, after Perry announced, showed Perry 29, Romney 17 and Bachmann 10. So it looks like Perry has continued to gain support, but Romney is also picking up support since late August, which has narrowed the gap. The RCP average shows the Perry lead down to 8.6%, which is a drop of about 3 points. So it does appear that the debate hurt him some, but it does not appear that Bachmann or Santorum benefited - it looks like Romney did.

What I find funny about the anti-Perry crowd is that they’ll tell you straight up that they don’t like Perry, but they never seem to tell you who THEIR candidate is. That’s because I suspect most of them have their hearts set on someone who doesn’t seem to have the guts to declare, join in the debates, and take their lumps just like all the other candidates (If she’s actually running, which I don’t think she is).

Didn't McCain win and Romney come in second and all the rest left left behind?

I didn't pick a specific date.

And giving illegal aliens special entitlements instead of making them obey the law like everybody else is amnesty.

But I don’t really see any advantage to conservatismn by letting Obama or Romney win here.

There is no advantage to conservatism regardless.

So... I'll argue for the most conservative candidate in the primaries, I'll hear all the wise political advise about how my guy is 'unelectable', how we need a candidate 'who can win', etc.

Then I'll watch as my candidate slowly succumbs to the conventional wisdom and end up settling for half a loaf in the general election, as usual.

Subsequent events will then prove that the conservatives were right - the more conservative option really was the right choice but of course by then it won't matter, and the nation moves further along the road to self immolation.

The cycle will be repeated as long as we're still having elections in this great country. Sure its discouraging but what else can you do?

As tirednvirginia stated earlier....instead of questions being ask to enable debaters to attack Rick Perry...let's hope Bret Baier has a fairer debate. I thought it incredible how the debaters who got the most questions were the ones willing to attack Rick Perry.

Rick Perry is a really a descent debater...the last 1/2 of the last debate was bad for him. The first debate was the Rick Perry Show...so hopefully, he step it up a bit.

Bush senior, Bob Dole, W, McCain, and now Perry and Romney. From a population of 300 million, this is the best the GOP can do? God help us.

I oppose Perry—I like Palin but if she doesn't run I like Bachman,Cain,Santorum, and then Gingrich.I would, however, vote for Perry over Hunstman,Paul or Romney.

I disagree completely. If Palin gets in, the conservative vote is further splintered and Romney benefits.

The Romney people most definitely want Palin to get in. (She likely won’t).

You weren't clear about anything. I posted some facts and not just opinion. In 2008 Huckabee came in second to McCain, not Romney.

The in-state tuition for children of illegals was passed by the conservative Texas legislature with only 4 lawmakers voting against it. Its a state issue, just as Perry said. Perry does not support blanket amnesty, however.

You make a good point here! When he spent the first half of that last debate getting beat up on (and then the second half too), it's no wonder it was wearing on him during that second half!

He's sure to pick up and polish his skills each time there is a debate, and you're also right that having a debate be more than a punch fight on Perry would be more helpful to us all in the long run.

Do point out to us the perfect candidte in the race with a chance in hell of defeating Obama and I am quite sure that we will support that candidate. Why, I cannot believe that we have yet to notice this perfect candidate that we see so obviously on our tv screens during those debates.

Sophistry.

Conservatism is pure fidelity to the law—law to the letter for gooder or better—we are a nation of laws not men.
If you are rationalizing The Governor of Texas flouting immigration laws, even with the approval of the Texas legislature, than you cannot call him, them or yourself true conservatives.True Americans of the Founders either enforce or repeal laws—there is no third way.

Bank robbery is against federal law, would it be FINE to legislate non assistance with the FBI in capturing the perpetrators using “states rights?”

If everybody in Texas wants to kow tow to illegal aliens that's fine by me as well—just don't EVER call yourselves conservatives.

“but it technically isn’t a lie.”

Until she can produce the person that supposedly told her the “retarded” story, and that person has black and white scientific proof that the vaccine caused said retardation, it’s a lie.

There are no perfect candidates. However, the choices we are presently saddled with are more of the same.

At this point in time it looks like it will be either Perry or Romney winning the nomination.

Its a sad state of affairs when we have to settle for the lesser of two evils once again.

Any one of the candidates can beat Obama right now. any one of them. But through manipulation of the system by the establishment types int he republican party we are going to have another moderate republican in office next year and things are only going to keep getting worse.

The problem many of your establishment types don’t seem to understand is that we need a transformational leader from the right. Someone willing to take on the corporate leeches and far left whack jobs. Neither Perry nor Romney would touch them - their politics are part of the problem not the solution.

Obfuscating the issue with a convoluted post will get you nowhere.

There was nothing deceptive about my post. I gave you the facts. You didn't like the facts. Too bad. The issue of in-state tuition is a states rights issue. Period. The Texas legislature passed it. End of story.

Here in Colorado, in-state tuition was voted down earlier this year. I would not support it. If I lived in Texas I might support it.

As Perry explained this keeps those children of illegals off state welfare rolls and makes then better contributors to Texas society and not just taking handouts in the underground economy.

Fact. Deportation of illegal teenagers from Texas back to Mexico is not going to happen. This is a long term problem. It will not be solved overnight. Securing the borders and stopping illegal border crossings will start to rectify the problem.

Hey I know what you are going through, I did not vote for McCain last time around. I thought, “well how bad can this Obama chap really be?”

Now I know. I won’t make that mistake again. In the primaries I like in order; Cain, Santorum, Gingrich, Perry...the rest I have no love for at all but would support ANY of them (even Paul or Romney) over Obama.

Am I happy that Perry or Romney are likely to be our nominee? No. But I’d prefer either over the current President. My top three have no chance because of a variety of reasons the top one being (almost) no executive experience. We’ve gone that route now for almost three years....hows’ that been workin’ for us?

Perry picking up support. Romney too. The rest fading back. Hopefully Perry continues his steady gains and Romney finds a wall to hit.
The wall is going to come in the form of actual state voting -- caucus and primary.

First Iowa. If Perry wins big there, that's a big smack against the wall for Romney.

Next is NH. If Perry wins it or ties it or even just barely loses it, wow, another wall for Romney.

And then there's SC. That's a wall too thick and high for Romney to do anything but smash into.

The numbers in this poll are general numbers.

What matters is what happens in the individual states.

I strongly hope, and confidently think, that in the individual contests Romney will do worse in 2012 than he did in 2008.

Personally, I think Obama’s failure as a leader has less to do with his lack of executive experience than his apparent egomaniacal crypto-marxist america-hating leftwing-academic islamic-terrorist-sympathising impulses.

>>>>>The numbers in this poll are general numbers.

For now that is the best we have. We're in the primary campaign but the primaries don't start till next February 2011 with Iowa. I'm looking for Romney to hit a wall before that. As the lesser candidates drop out, I don't see Romney exceeding 35%. IIRC, there is one FReeper keeping track of the individual state numbers. Last time they were posted support for Romney is not looking good.

The vaccine was NOT given in TX as Michele Bachmann stated. The Legislature did not pass the bill so NOT ONE DOSE OF VACCINE WAS GIVEN! Perry is an excellent candidate and has been an excellent governor. I am from TX so I should know.

As Perry explained this keeps those children of illegals off state welfare rolls

I don’t disagree with what you are saying over all. But I do hope that Perry or someone can come up with a more eloquent reasoning than “keeping illegals off the welare rolls” because it makes it sound as if the choices are either college or welfare and we know that many, many, people who don’t go to college are able to do quite well in life. This idea that college is so necessary and nearly a “right” should be made obsolete. The argument needs to be refined somehow. I think if you have attended High School in Texas for three years then you are considered “in state” and perhaps the reasoning was just to leave it at that and not to delve into where you were before the three years. The issue of legality should be resolved BEFORE this time period and already having looked the other way for years is the real issue maybe. I don’t know.
