Exactly a year ago this week, President Barack Obama stood at the podium at the UN General Assembly and declared his support for a Palestinian state.
Palestinians will never know the pride and dignity that comes with their own state, Mr Obama told the general assembly, unless the two parties reached a peace agreement.
So it will be some degree of awkwardness that Mr Obama returns to the UN this week and directs his representatives to vote against a plan that would lead to Palestinians achieving that exact destination, albeit by a different route.
Indeed, the US president will be acutely aware how hypocritical he must appear: voicing support for democratic transitions across the Middle East at the same time as scuppering Palestinian aspirations for recognition. Mr Obama hardly wants to be seen as being on the wrong side of the change sweeping through the Arab world.
Palestinian leaders this week plan to make a bid for full membership of the UN, a move that would officially make it a state, Palestine, on an equal footing with Israel. But the US has explicitly stated that it will use its veto power through the Security Council to block any such move.

"Do I want to win a second term?" "Or would I rather take Israel down?" "Dilemmas, dilemmas."
Neither will you, dummy.
NAIL ON THE HEAD! In terms of Obama’s world view, he experiences no conflict whatever. His only conflict is in figuring out how to retain power.
It has never bothered Ozero that he is appearing hypocritical.
Ozero wrote the book on being a hypocrite and a liar.
Koch nailed Obama.
Doesn’t anybody love him?
Jeez, it’s almost biblical how brother just can’t get a break. Like some kind of divine intervention.
“curses, foiled again”
I’m not a fan of the Palestinians, but I’m afraid Israel will have to give them some kind of state of their own existence. Otherwise, the Palestinians in Israel will eventually reproduce enough to vote the government in Israel as they wish.
The list, ping
Let me know if you would like to be on or off the ping list
The Palestinians already have a state. It's called Jordan.
‘”Do I want to win a second term?” “Or would I rather take Israel down?” “Dilemmas, dilemmas.”’
I think you give him too much credit. Likely his dilemma is ‘Grey Goose, or a little blow?’.
We are used to him changing his tune on everything he said before, the UN and Palestinians can get used to it too.
Bottom line, there has never been a Palestinian state before so there never should be one.
The Palestinians already have a state where they belong. It’s called Hell.
Is it possible that Barry will slink into the mushy middle and vote with an ‘Abstain’ at the UN? If there were none or little consequences to him you can bet OblahMao would throw Israel under the bus at the UN without blinking.
Actually, there is also a different war also in the offing — Shi’a Iran vs Sunni Saudi Arabia/Gulf-States. The Muslims may decide Israel is too tough a nut to crack and go for their hated co-religionists instead.
Most of the Jews are too smart to see that as nothing less than what it is, and “Goodbye, Barry”.
they’re called Israeli Arabs and they comprise about 20% of the State of Israel. They have FULL rights including SPECIAL rights to not have to serve in the IDF if they don’t want to, and even include members of the Knesset (congress or parliament.) The joke is - with everyone talking about “Israeli Apartheid...” WHERE ARE THE JEWS OF SYRIA / LEBANON / IRAQ / IRAN / EGYPT etc? They are DEAD, while Muhommedans in Israel live rich lives (often on welfare with 6+ kids) and bitch about the injustices of the Jews.
Say goodbye to your world.
