Is Obama Depressed?
The Atlanta Post ^ | September 16, 2011 08:01 AM | Yvette Carnell

On election day 2008, America was handed a triumphant symbolic victory, albeit unfulfilled. To most of us, President-elect Obama was a largely ambiguous character onto whom many of us had attached our own psychological yearnings and contemplations.

The truth is, as always, revealed in the fullness of time. Much of the disparate patchwork that weaved together Obama’s life story, the stuff that gave birth to his psychological outlook, was available to us before election ’08. What was not available, however, was any informed analysis of how Obama’s experiences would translate once Obama stopped campaigning and began actually governing.

Gawker is now reporting that the Times is preparing a story arguing that President Obama is depressed. According to a Gawker article published September 12th, “Obama no longer finds joy in the political back-and-forth” and “has seemed increasingly listless to associates.” It goes without saying that an article on the state of Obama’s mental health is purely speculative since, without a report – or prescription- from the Presidential doctor, there’s no way of accurately discerning the President’s mental fitness. But murmurings on whether Obama requires Zoloft or Wellbutrin does add another layer of context to the debate about what it means to be the first black President and the expectations that title carries.

The Slimes had better be careful.

If he is truly “depressed”, that would mean he is unfit for office (he is anyway, but I’ll humor them). He should resign immediately.

His background puts him at high-risk for depression. I wouldn’t be surprised, with his history of drug use (I’m guessing it was a LOT heavier than he admits in his book) to find that he suffered from clinical depression. I’m also curious as to whether his mother used drugs while he was in the womb.

I think the Slimes is trying to drum up sympathy for him. I don’t recall hearing of any of our non-Boomer presidents suffered from depression.

I don't think pathological narcissists get depressed until their supply of adoring fans (narcissistic supply) runs out (and, yes, it might be just about time for that).

Typically when that happens, things turn ugly!

As a long-time lurker, Onyx, I remember that your hubby is a psychiatrist.

Can you confirm this theory?

What was not available, however, was any informed analysis of how Obama’s experiences would translate once Obama stopped campaigning and began actually governing.

All the information about who this guy is and therefore how he would govern (badly) was out there, the media just suppressed or minimized it.

We knew he had no executive experience whatsoever.

We knew because of his associations with the likes of Ayers, Wright, ACORN, etc., that his views likely mirrored theirs.

He promised to push for government health care even if he lied about how he intended to do it.

He promised to reverse the Bush tax cut and try to raise taxes.

Clearly, Obummer was no DLC moderately liberal guy, like Bill Clinton. It was entirely predictable he would fall back on Keynesian deficit spending to react to a recession.

Oh, yeah, it was all in plain sight.

Barry should ask himself “What would Lyndon Baines Johnson do?”

Mine doesn’t think he’s clinically despressed.

He just thinks he’s depressed because he’s not universally loved and appreciated.

He says he thinks Obama believes his approval ratings should be 89% not 39% so, yeah, he’s depressed and mad about that...LOL.

Call it a *situational depression* - he’s not loved.

True. Unfortunately there is no medication to treat a severe personality disorder.

Exactly. To anyone who was paying attention, such as those on FR, it was obvious. We knew years ago what this guy was about and how he’d act.

Most people got caught up on the rhetoric and fake worship (all the fainting people at his rallies) and intentionally chose to overlook his shortcomings of which there were many.

He’s crashing and burning in probably the biggest drop in popularity in this history of the U.S. From all the hope to trying to figure out how to get him out of the process (and this coming from the left), I sincerely don’t think he’ll run in ‘12.

How do we know this is not a set up by the Rats to get 0bama out of the way now so they can put Biden in the seat and then go about getting a stronger Rat to run against the GOP nominee whomever that might be? I say it is a ruse.

Personality disorders are diagnosed on a different ‘axis’ than mood disorders such as depression and bipolar. So it appears obvious that he has narcissistic PD, but he could also have major depression or a lesser form of depression suc as such as dysthymic disorder.
But in addition to narcisstic PD, he may also have borderline PD which is characterized by manipulative behavior patterns. Borderline has no treatment and when identified, most practioners are urged to simply avoid treating these people because they constantly try to cause trouble.

Interesting view. I tend to think he won't let it go easily.

Beyond that, I'm not sure it would make a difference. It's not like there's a Joe Manchin out there who could run against the Obummer record. Pelosi and Reid have kept their members whipped into supporting the Obummer agenda right down the line. The logical candidate would be Hillary, but she has been a loyal member of the administration and could hardly run against health care given what she proposed in her own campaign. Either way, the Dems are stuck with this albatross.

I didn’t say he’d let go easily. More like “forced” out. The last thing the Dems want is for him to get whipped in the election. His narcissism may come through in ways unheard of in the history of the U.S. through a “created” crisis only HE can fix or some other method.

Regardless, I don’t think we’ll see him at the top of the Dem ticket in ‘12.

Just my opinion.

Individuals with NPD do not tolerate discomfort well and most commonly enter therapy for depression.

Seems quite likely that he could be depressed. (I’m certainly no expert in this. jmo)
