Horror show: Netflix losing more customers than expected on price hike, stock plunges 19 pct
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Netflix's decision to raise prices by as much as 60 percent is turning into a horror show.
The customer backlash against the higher rates, kicking in this month, has been much harsher than Netflix Inc. anticipated. That prompted management to predict Thursday that the company --the largest U.S. video subscription service-- will end September with 600,000 fewer U.S. customers than it had in June.

I’ve noticed that the list is far more extensive also! I wonder how many people figure that out :)
I am thinking of joining. Maybe you can help me with a question I have. How many devices can I stream to on one account, and can it be concurrent? I would really like to reduce my channel footprint since I pay so much and would prefer a la cart.
Can you stream Amazon Prime to an iPad?
You can’t get Amazon prime on an iPad..at least I can’t figure out how to do it!
Just checked the CEO, Reed Hastings, his political contributions info. He’s an Obama supporter and ‘Rat donor. Explains a lot.
Shareholders, you have a problem....
Amazon Prime is much better than Netflix. I have looked as well, was hoping maybe I missed something. :(
I have 6 devices registered and don’t know if there is a limit.
Right now there is a rumor that Netflix will limitn the number of concurrent streams but they deny this. I personally don’t have the bandwidth to run more than two concurrent streams.
I’m okay with the price hike for now. I use Netflix ALOT - both streaming and DVD. I did, however, cancel my DirecTV service. I don’t miss that at all.
I might reconsider if Netflix gets too much more expensive. They are really opening themselves up for a knockdown if they keep this up.
I'll never order Netflix
Recount, I have 10+ devices capable of streaming my netflix account. I didn’t count computers, tabs and phones.
Amazon’s product isn’t as convenient to use because they don’t have the clients on all the entertainment devices. And there’s actually lots of great movies coming out lately. The jury is way way out on who has the superior product, there’s too many different layers to both, layers the other doesn’t have.
Amazon didn’t get sued when they removed things from people’s kindles. If vudu loses the license vudu loses the license, there’s nothing they can do about it. Check the terms of use, I’m sure there’s something in there about how movies you bought are not guaranteed to be available forever.
Custom profiles per device makes sense. I don’t doubt there’s gay lesbo stuff on there, they’ve got a pretty wide selection which winds up including odd stuff. I just don’t encounter it.
I think a cable TV channel would be the worst thing for them. Way too much overhead, still more licensing headaches, staff, schedule, negotiating with the cable companies, all to jump into a medium that’s losing viewers... to Netflix. You don’t jump on sinking ships, and you way don’t jump on ships sinking because you torpedoed them.
Netflix hasn’t been exciting for years. That’s part of how you know they’re a good product. Microwaves aren’t exciting either, and we all have one.
Media is different than cars because cars are physical property and media is intellectual property. IP gets distributed, PP gets sold. They HAVE to be vastly different. If they weren’t then I could buy a CD and make millions of copies and sell them but so long as I kept the original all would be well. There’s a lot of problems in how we deal with IP, mostly thanks to Disney’s desire to own their Mouse forever, but if we ever started treating it like cars the entire entertainment industry would collapse.
That model doesn’t work for Netflix because they charge a flat monthly fee, and with that flat monthly fee the users could watch nothing or hundreds of things. Trying to figure out who gets how much of an iTunes style cut up would be impossible. And also the iTunes revenue stream is drying up, it worked for a while but it’s suffering from the same malaise as the rest of the music industry now.
Good question. I hadn’t frequented the apps that much, but didn’t find out right away that the lists were much more extensive. Once I started using it in earnest, I did find out rather quickly. I’m glad you picked up on it too.
Ipad? That’s that giant Iphone that doesn’t make phone calls? Not sure.
Ditto. While willing to pay for 2-DVDs-at-a-time service and then sit on the discs for weeks (making them $5 rentals on average), I’m not willing to pay 60% more. Streaming only now - when you’ve got kids, unlimited videos for a cheap flat fee rocks!
Wonder if they did an analysis of how many subscribers underused their subscription, knowing they were wasting money but too lazy/greedy to actually cancel/change it, but would drop one part or the other when prices went up further.
Methinks streaming-only was their original goal. DVD rental was just a leveraging tool to grow the base while technology caught up.
It is now 600,000 and 2. LOL
Mine is wi-fi only. I prefer to see it as a giant iTouch. :)
