Casey Anthony owes authorities just under $98,000 for the costs of investigating the disappearance of her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, in 2008, a Florida judge ruled Thursday.

Good news. I hope she loses the other cases that have been filed against her and ends up owing so much money that even her book sales won’t be enough to bail her out.
Hey stranger! I was just thinking how long it’s been since I’ve seen you around here!
BTW - Rutgers still sucks.
The state prosecuted her at their cost and she was found not guilty.
Why should she be responsible for the search?
I think she did it but my opinion doesn’t matter.
It's nice to see you, JRBC! :)
She was found guilty of lying to law enforcement.
I believe that she lied to the authorities and in so doing caused them to spend a small fortune searching for her daughter, who was not missing, but dead.
If she’d have been a black ex-NFL hero, she’d now owe NOTHING and be off, golfing.
She’s guilty, but she was found innocent.
More and more this is what I see; gov’t taxes us heavily on the premise they have to give us all this faaaancy stuff. THEN, if you use it? You owe them allll over again.
If we have to pay cash at some point, why not simply just MAKE IT ALL PRIVATE, hmmmm...?
No problem. That will be small change to her after her TV, magazine, and book deals.
She shouldn't be. People lie to the police every day and they aren't fined. This is nothing more than the state of Florida(h) asking for a pound of flesh another way.
Pi$$ on them!!!
Why should lying to law enforcement be a crime.
They can lie to us with impunity.
Price tag is too low however.
Should be more like $100 million and 50 lifetimes to 1,500 years.
My opinions of this woman aside, Florida can shove it. They failed to make their case; why is she liable for the State’s gambles?
BTW, I like Penn State too!
She should be in prison for the rest of her life.
I agree with all those that think she is guilty, but this amounts to a civil fine upon someone who is found not guilty. A concept that does not fit well with my notion of fair and equitable government.
As much as I loved Reagan, I’ve never liked the notion civil forfeiture that his policies brought about.
They just beg for abuse.
I think I read something said that the jury thought she had something to do with this but the state did not charge her with the lesser included offense that they felt she was gu8ilty of, that is why she was not guilty of what she was charged with.
It wasn’t much of a search. The body was in the most obvious place in the closest woods to the Anthony house just down the block and the body was only 20 feet from the road.
Seems to me Caylee should have been found the first morning somebody started looking for her.
I figure a search like that might cost, about $50.00 - $200.00 bucks. $300.00 bucks total if you brought a dog.
I am speechless that it took more than a day to find the body. I guess me and my dog shoulda went down there as soon as Caylee was reported missing?

I have long advocated, for decades, that we need to change our laws and legal system, so that if a defendant is found innocent, that the state must reimburse the defendant for all of his attorney fees, expenses, and lost wages.
It is unfair for innocent people who even if they are found innocent lose all of their life savings and their house defending themselves. A Not Guilty verdict is not good news to anybody who is in financial ruin defending himself.
I personally knew 2 innocent people who lost everything defending themselves against bogus charges. One of the people I knew had to pay for 2 trials since the first jury was hung and the state prosecuted again.
The reason she should be responsible for the search is because of the testimony in court.
In court, the defense was that the little girl drowned in the swimming pool, and in some panic of events, the grandpa disposed of the body. Since her defense in court was that the little girl had drowned, and grandpa got rid of the body, clearly a search was not called for. Police resources were wasted on a fruitless search, and she knew it, regardless of whether the state was able to prove their case in court.
That’s why she should be responsible.
She is liable because she knew that her daughter was not kidnapped and missing. This has nothing to do with whether the state of Florida made their case in court. She is not being held liable for the state’s gambles. This is a completely separate legal issue decided by a judge.
