HYATTSVILLE, Md. — Michelle Obama says a pledge by the Olive Garden, Red Lobster and four other restaurant chains to serve healthier meals is a "breakthrough moment" for the industry.

The Darden restaurant company pledged Thursday to reduce calories and sodium by 20 percent over 10 years. It will also make a fruit or vegetable side dish and low-fat milk standard with kids' meals. If a child wants French fries, an adult will have to ask for them.

Finally, I’m sure Darden wouldn’t do this if they didn’t think it would make them more dough in the long run.

Perhaps I could believe that if they had decided to make that move independently, however since it evidently was coordinated with the White House, it's hard to give much credence to the idea.

In a similar vein, maybe someone in the upper management ranks of Smith & Wesson might have thought that cooperating with Bill Clinton in making built-in gun locks a mandatory "feature" of their handgun product line would lead to customer approval and subsequent financial gains by the company (and exactly how did that work out for them? Yes, it destroyed the company, and the former owners had to sell out to keep it afloat.), but cozying up with the First Lady (or, by extension with the government) would seem to reek more of rent-seeking than an honest attempt to advance the interests of the shareholders.

I expect that this, too, will backfire big time on the company. Leaving a bad taste in your customers' mouths is not a wise marketing strategy for any company, especially a restaurant chain.

I wonder if the First Elistist perceives Americans as going out to dinner very frequently and thus believes we need her expert guidance from years working as a dietician/nutritionist. Oh wait, politicians don’t have to be experts to pass along dictates, they just need to get elected and magically know all.

As for my family, we go out to dinner 2-3X a month, and yeah... sometimes it’s not healthy, but it’s not our normal meal. I’m fine with a giant portion of something that may not be as healthy as a salad. It’s a night out. I’m a big boy and have the capability to actually make decisions.

How freaking hard it to put low calorie items on the menu and leave the rest alone? Many restaurants have been doing that for years.

I’ve eaten there only once, a couple of weeks ago, I know it is hard to believe, but I’m very discriminating with my dining out dollars and going to a national chain restaurant means mediocrity generally, so I no go. I’ll never go again.

Screw this fad. I don’t see any TGIFriday’s in my neighborhood anymore since they downsized their portions and tweaked the menu. That’s what happens when you start listening to foolish food nazi’s rather than your clientele.

Additionally, never, ever eat at a Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que. Mrs. Bigfoot and I stopped by one a couple of Sunday’s ago for lunch. The food took 50 minutes to be served. The waitress brought us an appetizer to pacify us and instead it almost poisoned us. The food especially the pathetic ear of corn was inedible and the bill came to $52.00 for two lunches without adult beverages!!! Be forewarned.

Who says french fries are unhealthy? Also, how do I know vegetables are healthy? Just because someone says so?

No loss - never eat at the Olive Garden anyways. If I want sphagetti out of a can, I can buy Chef-Boy-Ardee. I am sure that they will stop serving the other fatty foods which contains alfredo sauce. /sarc.

As for Red Lobster, they can keep their frozen fish.

Someone needs to report that guy from Diners, Drive-ins & Dives.

He’s a total subversive to the cause.

I never eat there, anyway.

This is stupid. The fat in milk is GOOD FOR YOU. Go take a look and see how low fat milk is made, what the process is to remove it.

Mooch is a dumbass beyond words and so is Darden for agreeing to this. As far as Friendly’s goes the place went down the tubes YEARS ago.

EXACTLY. My wife is Italian and refuses to eat there. Here in the NE we have tons of options for Italian good, the rest of the country not so much.

That said Olive Garden is horrible in comparison to REAL Italian cooking.

"If a child wants French fries, an adult will have to ask for them."

However, if a child wants an abortion or condoms from the school nurse, no adult permission is needed or desired.

Silly you...Get your "health" priorities straight. (Do I need a sarc tag?)

Giant BTTT moral/health point!

None of your chains are down Louisiana way. We do have a Tasty Donut that serves small, thin burgers fried with onions, muctard and pickle served on a parker roll - yum. I usually drive by for a couple before grocery shopping. Anyway, the food police haven't hit Louisiana yet and if they dare to take on New Orleans, hold on to your hats - you will see grease-a-fly’n all the way to Texas:)

Advice on reducing your sodium intake should be taken with a pinch of salt, according to the latest research. Not only is there no need to eat less of it but it can also be positively dangerous for some people’s health.

Scientists across Europe have completed three studies which contradict a British Government health warning that people should cut their intake to six grams a day.

Research from the University Medical Centre Utrecht in the Netherlands, to be published this summer, showed that there was no material benefit from a lower intake.

Prof Deiderick Grobbee, a cardiovascular specialist and an author of the report, said: “If people stick within a range of moderate sodium intake, which we normally get from salt in our food, there is no material variation to the risk of mortality.”

There was little to be gained, he said, by cutting salt for anyone on a typical Western diet who eats the equivalent of 16g or three-and-half teaspoonfuls a day.

The independent research, known as the Rotterdam Study, involved almost 8,000 people in their fifties and above. Each person’s sodium intake was estimated from a nightly urine sample and compared with their blood pressure over a month.

The findings showed that as long as their salt intake was moderate - no more than 16g a day - there was an insignificant effect on blood pressure.

If an adult has to ask, that rules out anyone in the White House or its administration.

I wonder what they would think of this?

The Infamous Twinkie Lasagna

1 Box Twinkies

1 Package cream cheese

1 Pint Sour cream

1 Pint Ricotta cheese

1 Cup sugar

¼ teaspoon vanilla

1/8 Teaspoon Orange Liqueur

1 Cadbury’s chocolate bar w/almonds

Slice twinkies lengthwise and arrange the slices in a single layer in a medium baking dish. (at least 2” deep) combine all ingredients but the chocolate in a mixing bowl and pour enough over the twinkies to cover them. Shave the chocolate and sprinkle between layers. Continue to build the layers until the dish is full. Freeze over night and let thaw for at least 2 hours before serving
