I saw the GOP debate and the Greta interview with Palin and Bachman. I am absolutely against Perry's mandate of the Gardasil vaccine. On policy grounds. Period.
But, to see the two ladies pile on with corruption charges against Perry was truly disgusting. If they have any proof that Perry mandated the vaccine to profit Merck, I am the first one who wants it. And, if proof emerges that he did so, I will be the first one to revoke my support for him.
It happens in the industry all the time. Acquaintances get you an audience. So, in this case, the fact that Perry's previous staffer was a lobbyist must have gotten the meeting. A meeting to hear about this wonderous cancer curing drug. Nothing corrupt about it. Is there more to the reason Perry made such a call? Possible/Probable. Evidence of it? None so far.
Come on. Do Palin and Bachman have to resort to gutter politics to get themselves better positioned?
ditto
In 2005, HB 2475 said, "This bill requires the Department of State Health Services to develop a strategic plan to eliminate mortality from cervical cancer by the year 2015 " "The strategic plan must be developed and delivered to the governor and legislature no later than December 31, 2006."
Was the plan delivered to Perry? Yes it was.
A 47 page report (Acrobat PDF) called "Texas Cervical Cancer Strategic Plan," December 2006, by Texas Department of State Health Services in collaboration with The Texas Cancer Council was delivered.
Page 8, "Executive summary" Armed with this new HPV vaccine, we can achieve the moment when we know our goal eliminating cervical cancer death and suffering is in reach.
Page 20, "Access to Care" - "Women must have access to cervical cancer screening to eliminate cervical cancer in Texas. The National Cancer Institute reports that groups of women with high cervical cancer mortality:...
"Widespread vaccination is a key to reducing cervical cancer incidence in Texas"
The people who think this was something Perry cooked up in secret for crony capitalist pals at Merck in exchange for $6,000 total in campaign donations are demented.
He acted in the furtherance of the legislature's public health goals by ensuring the widest dissemination of and coverage for the vaccine.
The three shots included in Gardasil cost $360 which is not cheap for "low income" individuals most in need of it. Opt-out vaccines are covered by insurance, Medicaid and other programs. Opt-in vaccines not.
In the time since, Gardasil has been found effective against even more forms of HPV-related cancer beyond cervical cancer. It's effective against oral, anal and penile cancers too. On that basis the FDA has expanded its approval to include males.
The science is solid: there's now a competing HPV cervical cancer vaccine using the same technology.
For the umpteenth time Perry said he overreached and should've gone through the legislature.
As for that, I wonder if this was a case of a strong legislature asserting itself against what's considered a weak governorship.
The opt out was badly constructed. It didn’t help the situation of private schools with boilerplate vaccination policies that simply include the Texas mandatory list by reference. Perry didn’t know, or else Perry didn’t care.
I have just about had enough of the BULL. The vaccine was tested for years. It was approved by the FDA. It was recommended by the American Academic of Pediatrics. It was recommended by the CDC. It was recommended the National Cancer Institute and by other professional bodies as well.
It had to be "opt out" to ensure coverage by health insurance, medicaid and other programs.
Of course the men were not required.
Men cannot get cervical cancer. At the time, Gardasil was approved only for that use.
If you paid attention for one scintilla of a second to this issue you'd know a couple years later the FDA approved Gardasil for HPV-related cancers in males.
It's now used to prevent multiple cancers caused by just a few of over 150 HPV strains in males and females.

Thank you for finding this information.
I had not heard this before.
Hope Perry can elaborate on this more.
This info REALLY needs to get out.
Bachmann is desperate to save her dying campaign. It's shameful she'd stoop that low.
Perry's clearly not afraid of the issue. Where Bachmann wouldn't name the company, Perry did. Where Bachmann would only say "thousands" donated Perry was specific ($5K) and put it in context of total money raised, tens of millions.
She also showed her desperation on the vaccine claiming there was "no choice" when she knew full well parents could opt-out for their kids. She affected a concerned and pleading mother's look, as if she was going to cry at one point. It was very unbecoming.
Like Romney, Bachmann showed no class on Social Security either suggesting Perry would end it when he was standing right there saying nothing of the kind.
When things got tough for her campaign, Bachmann revealed herself as a transparent, deceptive, innuendo-slinging liar. She learned well from her time with Ed Rollins.
I didn't see what Palin said but she's the last person who should be trading in innuendo after what's been said about her.
I’m a black, 42 year old, red meat conservative firefighter here in Austin Texas who: 1) Has listened to rush daily (all 3 hours on ipod and streaming audio) since 1990 2) Enmeshed myself in realclearpolitics.com, heritage.com, freerepublic, wsj.com, glenn beck and all the fox conservative shows (Greta doesn’t count) the last 10 years 3) Has an extensive war chest file cabinet full of various conservative news pieces and blog posts on multiple current and past events (ie keynesian economics, obamacare, clinton taxes, obama deficit, global warming farcical data, and pro life issues) 4) Has a twitter page following approx 25 conservative bloggers and columinst (reggieta is screenname) to further stay informed.
I grew up in Oakland California so I now the disaster of democratic city management and state rule. Texas is bad ass compared to the basket case called California. And I know the backwards destructive voting patterns of the black community blinding voting for Democrats, regardless of it causing there very own demise.
I want to get this clown Obama out of the white house as much as the next conservative. But these Freeper attacks on arguably the most likely general election republican candidate (Perry) are hilariously stupid. The focus is the economy dummies and ya’ll are doing the democrats work for them by taking the dirt road into issues that won’t be the big focus in 2012. Even Rush said this on last weeks show. The Far Left’s goal is to get the focus of ya’ll off the main issues and into the weeds on interesting but ancillary issues. I know this is primary season but it’s all rediculous to see. And if the candidate isn’t Palin no one else passes the sniff test. Really!? (I loved Palin dearly in 2008 but she has squandered her chances starting with when she quit her governorship. I’ve concluded she’s all about getting attention now more than being a viable candidate. When she quit the governorship, she quit the chance to be president. PERIOD.)
Just a question. Who in the hell are you going to vote for....Romney and his Romneycare? Really? And Cain and Bachmann with their general election numbers in the single digits. Yeah...they’ll get the nomination. Let’s not be stupid people.
First....grow the hell up. No candidate is perfect. I’ve been in Texas since 91. Seen Perry up close for 10 years. He’s the real deal. Definitely has made mistakes but is no GW Bush (ie spending).
So do this for me. Either agree to back and vote for Romney or shut the hell up. Because neither Cain nor Bachmann nor Paul (for you Ron Paul wingnut borderline cultist) are going to get the nomination. Perry ain’t perfect but IMO he’s no McCain nor GW Bush and definitely no romneycare Romney. And for the record I think Romney is a disaster because he can never attack Obamacare since it was modeled after Romney’s very own state plan
Now, you petulant children can go back to slinging mud against a most viable Texas candidate. Clearly it makes you feel better. In the end, you’ll vote for Perry in the general, or even Romney, because he ain’t Obama. Where are you gonna go? That’s what I thought. So what’s the whole point of this psuedo-intellectual exercise on these posts? Sheesh.
So you are in effect saying that Gov Palin is unlikely to contest for POTUS because she is afraid and that such fear has been brought on by her Katy Couric interview during the 2008 campaign? Seriously?!
When you have your next medical emergency, why don't you try going to Pep Boys for help?
Rubio is not a Natural Born Citizen. Therefore, he cannot be a VP or POTUS.
The opt-out was badly constructed, ignorant of the way that private schools did things in Texas. Once Perry was made aware of this, his excuse for ignorance was gone.
The big E-mail dump gave a lot of impressive insight on this. I doubt the whole seedy Merck/Gardisil situation sits well with Palin. Doesnt sit well with me, either.
She'd better know something more because nobody is going to win the WH without Texas and Texans won't take kindly to that kind of inuendo without something to back it up. If she does not have rock solid evidence he sold out for a contribution, then nobody will believe her again.
Thank you for this information- something that seems to be relatively rare lately.
If we're not careful, that will happen. I try to remember that FR is not the country, and that a small number of foolish posters can cause havoc beyond their numbers.
>> I heard part of the Palin interview and frankly, Ive lost a lot of respect for Sarah Palin.
Something’s not right. Palin was hostile towards Perry at the end of the interview as if she had an axe to grind.
Perry was a jackass for the Gardisal EO, but the ravaging, given the EO reversal, and his admissions of poor judgement, is getting out of hand and generally unbecoming. The Left must be enjoying this chaos tremendously.
Cain and Gingrich are the only participants that stand out as being respectable candidates with Perry not lagging far behind.
Perry has really rained on her parade.
Based upon a brief internet search, it seems that you are correct.
Palin discussed with Greta today the Gardasil issue in Alaska, and how she (Palin, governor at the time) was absolutely opposed to seeing it mandated in Alaska.
Flame away bitches.
