When Eduardo Sancion chose the location for his shooting spree in Carson City, Nevada Tuesday he picked a a street home to at least seven military installations and recruitment centers.
Just over a mile away on South Carson Street is the Army National Guard, another mile north is the Nevada Army national Guard depot. Scattered throughout the stripmalls and businesses on Carson St. are recruiters for the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines.
Sancion pulled up to to the IHOP known to be popular among servicemembers in a blue minivan with a "Support Our Troops" bumper sticker on the back, and began his spree by shooting a woman near a motorcycle on his way in.
Inside he fired at five National Guardsmen seated at the back of the restaurant eating breakfast, killing three soldiers -- then shot seven civilians -- killing another woman.

The fact that Sancion or Sencion targeted military is obviously related to motive. However, notice how quickly the family and the media leapt up to allege the murderer was mentally ill, changing him into a victim too.

Three members of the National Guard were killed when the shooting interrupted their breakfast meeting. Along with 31-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Miranda McElhiney, the other victims killed in the shooting were 38-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Christian Riege of Carson City and 35-year-old Major Heath Kelly of Reno.
...In all, seven people were wounded in the attack. Their names were not released, but authorities said three of them were released from the Carson-Tahoe Hospital on Wednesday.
Maj. April Conway of the Nevada National Guard said one of the three released was a Guard member. That leaves one Guard member still hospitalized, along with three civilians.
Riege, an armor crewman, was known as a fitness buff. He served in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010.
Kelly was a decorated officer and avid student of military history who was known for his dry sense of humor. He was married with two kids.
...McElhiney, of Reno, was the youngest of those killed. She was an administrative sergeant who had been in the Guard for 13 years. She was remembered for baking birthday, wedding and graduation cakes for anyone who asked and mentoring young women entering the Guard.

Maybe it is time once again, to ban service uniforms offbase.
They did this in the 80's with all the anti establishment/anti Viet Nam War riffraff/hippies/slugs out there.

Maybe it is time to allow all military members to be armed wherever they go.
Nevada is a state that doesn’t hassle you very much for a CCW. It is amazing to me that NO ONE inside that building was armed except the perp.

IIRC- there was an armed civilian in the IHOP who said that when the shooting started and peoples heads started exploding, the last thing he thought about was pulling a gat. I support CCW but sometimes it’s not enough.

I saw on TV last night someone in the
parking lot with a CCW
say he was outgunned and did not try.

I'll second this. You don't run from a fight like this. All of our soldiers have sacrificed to one degree or another for us, we shouldn't expect them to hide what they are when they're in public. Unlike most of us, they've actually earned that freedom. Those who would harm or ridicule our soldiers don't deserve to live, much less live in this country.

It is amazing to me that NO ONE inside that building was armed except the perp.I agree. Nevada allows concealed carry. Even my Ohio CCW permit is valid there. When I read of this incident, I couldn't believe that no one in that IHOP was carrying.

Oh no, that’s like saying they are INVITING attack by wearing the uniform.
There is a war going on in this country. This shooting was part of it.
Here in CA, the latino gang-bangers shoot at and often kill law enforcement officers, then flee to Old Mexico where they will not be extradited, due to our death penalty.
I think it has become a rite of passage for the invaders to wage this war on peace officers and others in uniform. Therefore, all the more reason to wear the uniform proudly and, in essence, say: Bring it.

My friends and I talked about that too. The majority of us have CCW permits and we were wondering what would have happened if a couple of bystanders were armed.
I do admit though - despite having my concealed carry permit, I don't carry. I have only had my permit for 6 weeks and still haven't found a comfortable way to carry. It's especially frustrating for me as I'm left-handed.

I would much rather have a LIVE Soldier in civilian clothes, then a Dead one in uniform.
They did the ban in the 80's to protect our Soldiers, and a good thing they did, you, I nor anyone else were harmed by that order to ban.
In civies or uniform, our soldiers still know how to protect themselves, if given a chance. In uniform they were sitting ducks, what chance did they have to protect themselves, armed or unarmed?
I say cut the RISKS. It's like saying after a child has been run over, "My kid has a right to play in the street, it's our street", your kid is also DEAD.

It's like saying after a child has been run over, "My kid has a right to play in the street, it's our street", your kid is also DEAD I'm sorry, that is not a good analogy. It doesn't pass the common sense test. No one advocates that kids have a "right" to play in the street. Please.

Are Mexican nationals eligible to receive Social Security Disability payments?
