Karl Rove slammed GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry on ABC’s Good Morning America on Wednesday, calling his views on Social Security “toxic.”

Such views, Rove said, are “toxic in a general-election environment, and they are also toxic in a Republican primary.”
“And if you say Social Security is a failure and ought to be replaced by a state-level program, then people are going to say, ‘What do you mean by that?’ and make a judgment based on your answer to it,” he added.

I wonder what Perry thinks about the following.
Yeah it’s a ponzi scheme but only because Congress took the taxes of small business and working Americans (the kind that have earned income as opposed to investment) and redistributed it to hedge funders, mega rich, poor, illegals, railroad workers and those in government such as some in Congress, who never paid into SS.
It wasn’t my decision that politicians of both parties spread it around to others instead of lock boxing it to only those who paid, and I don’t accept it is an entitlement.
Perry is a globalist in sheep’s clothing. He overplays the conservative role to cover it up.
Yesterday, I forced myself to tune in to Hannity on WABC here in NY. I had to force myself because we just lost a powerful Conservative voice (Steve Malzberg) on WOR who was on opposite Hannity. Sure enough, within minutes, the dolt Hannity announces that Rove will be on latter that day. I couldn't switch stations fast enough.
Sean Hannity is a useful idiot.
It may harm him among some indies, but it also may help him among other demographics, like the Tea Party and objective indies.
A lot more people are wise to the SS PONZI SCHEME. Anyone who is informed and honest knows that it's nothing less than a PONZI SCHEME.
At last, a politician running for office has the balls to call it exactly what it is, and then not back away from it when pressed.
This isn't the good ol days 20 years ago when any pol who mentioned touching SS was finished. Times have changed and people are beginning to realize that everyone can't have a nice retirement that costs exponentially what the retiree put into it.
When “reality” becomes “toxic” ...most people and societies are on an express train to disaster.

He means Perry calling SS a "ponzi scheme" and Perry saying that the younger generation won't have any benefit from the money they're putting in if things continue as they are?
Of course Perry is right. It's similar to a ponzi scheme in that eventually you are making the recipient group too large for the paying group to cover. That is a classic ponzi scheme.
Is it "toxic" politics to talk about such things? Yes, history has proven that SS is the "third rail" of politics.
What is Perry's solution? I'm not sure, but a few indirect quotes seemed to indicate some kind of guaranteed government investing of individual money. I don't know how it would work, but I can see it being cheaper than this current system.
As always, I don't trust any paper wealth that goes up in value simply because more people want to buy that paper this week and goes down in value because people don't want that paper next week.
This needs to be pointed out by anyone proposing an alternative to SS: if Federal employess can invest in a TSP account, which is really an IRA, why can't private sector employees do the same.
Would love to see someone ask Barney Frank to disclose how much he's earned from his TSP account. In fact, why not disclose the TSP earnings for EVERY Congress critter, and then ask them why they are opposed to allowing non-federal employees to have the same opportunity to invest in, as you call them, private individual chose retirement funds.
And what provision of the Constitution gives the Federal Government the right to control your retirement???????????????????????
If a state has a retirement system then that might encourage people not to leave a State. It would set up competition between the states for workers.
If I leave a job, then that company is no longer responsible for maintaining my retirement account. If the state sets up a retirement system, then when you leave the state, you are no longer their problem.
The polling numbers are such that it is a loosing issue.
How did it work for Sharon Angle against Harry Reid? People can talk sensibly about SS reform, but many people of all political leanings are put off by overblown rhetoric and demagoguery on most any issue, and especially one they've paid into for decades.
Sounds like he basically has to provide a realistic alternative and “fix” for it. Nothing new here, he’s just a bit more willing to “go there” - which has to be done.

Perry leaves himself open to charges of starving old ladies unless he articulates a plan to fix it properly.

Well he is doing well in the primary polls and even vs. Obama.
What he has to do is come up with a plan, like Bush’s, but sell it better than Dubya did.

The question is: useful to whom? Not to me. That stupid 'debate' he had yesterday after 5pm made me switch to the classical station just as fast as I could.
