(CBS News)
The Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the presidential campaign season, and many of the leading candidates for the Republican nomination have started to take shots at each other, not just at President Obama, reports CBS News political correspondent Jan Crawford.
Several jabbed at Texas Gov. Rick Perry, perceived by many pundits as the latest frontrunner.
That list included Sarah Palin - who's managing to keep speculation alive about whether she's going to toss her hat into the GOP ring.
At a Tea Party rally in Indianola, Iowa, the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee took what Crawford says appeared to be a swipe at Perry, after reports suggesting he was cozy with big donors.
"Some GOP candidates," Palin said, "they also raise mammoth amounts of cash and we need to ask them, too: What, if anything, do their donors expect in return from their investments?"
Most of the leading Republican contenders will be in South Carolina today at a political forum hosted by powerful, arch-conservative Sen. Jim DeMint.
And DeMint told "Early Show" co-anchor Jeff Glor he doesn't think a Palin run is in the cards this time around.
"It doesn't appear that she is," going to get into the fray, DemInt said. "She's done a lot, I think, to engage the American people and stir things up, which we really needed to do, to get American citizens more involved in the process. It made a big difference in the last election. My hope is it'll make an even bigger difference in the next election, as people take back their government."

Since when does he speak for Palin? I'll wait and hear what SHE has to say.
If Sarah announces today in New Hampshire, she will be in the GOP debate Wednesday night. She may wait until Constitution Day September 17th. That way she will not only announce on a day made for the Tea Party but will be much more informed on how to address the opinions that come out of the GOP debate Wednesday.
I pray it goes well. I have a 21 yr old grandson looking, looking, looking................
Would that apply to Palin as well?
Of course. I’m not saying DeMint isn’t a politician and has an agenda of his own. But...He knows what it takes to be in a race. Not saying she won’t run but I’m thinking Gov. Palin is a hard working lady and would want to hit the gronud running right away.
Perry and Romney’s campaigns are running full steam ahead and she hasn’t even announced....my thoughts are if she was going to run she would have announced already and started her campaign. Just my two cents I certainly don’t know....Heck I expect a couple of curve balls from Obama...I’m thinking he will announce a new VP after asking Biden to step down. Maybe someone to balance out barry....Obama/Christie???? They were awful buddy buddy the other day
A lot of people didn't.
A lot of people have given up and lost interest in a Palin run.
When they are getting rich through pay to play? Not gonna happen unless the next Prez is a powerhouse. The political class in DC needs to be PUSHED. Few willingly give up power and money.
Sure he did something. Supporting him got lots of former freepers the Zot in the great "Not A Purge."
I think that if she runs, it will be because Perry fumbles - else she will stay on the side-lines and add her own brand of support.
She has set the stage for plain-spoken, unapologetic conservatism and we need to be grateful for that. If she stays out, she will still have tremendous influence in ensuring we stay on track - especially if we win the WH back. She will also serve as a conduit to help explain the benefits of any progress we manage to put in place to restore our Nation.
In or out, she has become a national tresure to me.
Don’t know who this guy is but...............

Palin does not use or rely on polls. She said in Iowa that she has never won a poll but has won elections. She also said that polls are for strippers and skiers. Polls are worthless.
But they are hysterical. One had her in 3rd place with already declared candidates. Imagine! 3rd! And she hasn't said whether she's running.
If our candidate is Perry or Romney we’re not taking back our country.
I fully agree. I know too many independents who, while they have no use for Obama at all, have less opinion of Palin. While the conservatives I know like her on principle, none think her electable (I’m in that camp).
You can’t win elections without the independents, and if you choose a candidate who’s also way behind the eight ball in that segment, you are not going to win.
I know this will stir up the Palin True Believers, but reality is reality.
True....I still miss Howlin...
how can we trust this guy....he seems so right on in everything but this....
Indeed.
I wonder, what will her standing with her fervent supporters be if she opts out this time around? It can't be enhanced, can it? Will they rationalize it away? She certainly likes the spotlight.
She has also lost elections.
She also said that polls are for strippers and skiers. Polls are worthless.
That's what people at the bottom of the polls say. They're almost always proven wrong.
It will be interesting to see who he supports.
>> In or out, she has become a national tresure to me.
Amen!
