(CBS News)
The Labor Day weekend marks the unofficial start of the presidential campaign season, and many of the leading candidates for the Republican nomination have started to take shots at each other, not just at President Obama, reports CBS News political correspondent Jan Crawford.
Several jabbed at Texas Gov. Rick Perry, perceived by many pundits as the latest frontrunner.
That list included Sarah Palin - who's managing to keep speculation alive about whether she's going to toss her hat into the GOP ring.
At a Tea Party rally in Indianola, Iowa, the former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential nominee took what Crawford says appeared to be a swipe at Perry, after reports suggesting he was cozy with big donors.
"Some GOP candidates," Palin said, "they also raise mammoth amounts of cash and we need to ask them, too: What, if anything, do their donors expect in return from their investments?"
Most of the leading Republican contenders will be in South Carolina today at a political forum hosted by powerful, arch-conservative Sen. Jim DeMint.
And DeMint told "Early Show" co-anchor Jeff Glor he doesn't think a Palin run is in the cards this time around.
"It doesn't appear that she is," going to get into the fray, DemInt said. "She's done a lot, I think, to engage the American people and stir things up, which we really needed to do, to get American citizens more involved in the process. It made a big difference in the last election. My hope is it'll make an even bigger difference in the next election, as people take back their government."

“arch-conservative Sen. Jim DeMint”
CBS would not even identify a Senator as liberal much less arch-liberal. Any Democrat would just be a senator.
I like the format of this gathering a lot. Instead of being all about the moderators, it’s all about the candidates.
bummer. she was it, our only chance. now all we get is another big-haired, self worshipping skirt chaser.
RIP America.
I’m willing to wait until SHE says what she is going to do.
Until then, it’s just guessing.
I have been saying the same thing. Why should she run now? She is a major force that will get stronger in coming years. She is young and can afford to wait. Get more clout via SarahPAC, collect some chits, and cash them in down the road.
What could Romney possibly know of Palin’s plans?
Agree - Sarah is on her own timetable. Yet with repeated references to “my plan” in her recent speech, I believe only she’s in...
Only Sarah knows for sure....But DeMint’s word is good enough for me. (Wonder if he’s trying to soften the letdown some will feel if she doesn’t run?)
"You're the disease and I'm the cure"
Coming to a local TV screen near you. Sarah Palin "Cobra" will announce her candidacy on Labor Day Sept. 5th 2011.
“She is young and can afford to wait.”
Foolhardy. With the economy in the toilet and Obama’s re-election looking very unlikely along with the possibility of a GOP controlled Congress in 2012, whoever wins the GOP nomination will be in an excellent position to chart this country’s history for the next 4-8 years. For her to skip this election to wait for “clearer skies” is mindboggling. From a GOP perspective the weather forecast couldn’t be more promising!
I saw a headline yesterday that claimed "Romney wins Tea Party Endorsement". But now I can't find it anywhere, so apparently it was yanked.
She may or may not run but when giving her speech Sat I found her reaction interesting (to say the least) when the 2000 people started chanting “run, Sarah, run”. I’d like to hear how that woman who O’Reilly oft has on interprets Palin’s expression at that time. It wasn’t one of acceptance, for lack of a better term.
Kickoff in New Hampshire? Today just might be the day.
demint may vote and speak like a teapartier but hes a politican first and last. like all politicans listen to 50% and believe 25%
Not invisible hand, non-existent balls.
Wah, wah, wah, someone said that she doesn't like me, wah, wah, wah.
Don't you even have enough courage to wait until "your only chance" declares what she will do?
Chamberlain, stay the hell out of my foxhole.
I disagree.
In the absence of data, one theory is as good as another...
Yeah...but the country can't.
Spokeshave who has his first job interview in months next week.
Nope. DeMint has his own PAC agenda, not that I disagree with it but as the system goes along in DC, it is all about raising money. If he thinks he can scrape off some of her regular PAC donors by saying it “doesn’t appear” she is running, then he sets the table to add some to his PAC.
