AUSTIN - Gov. Rick Perry and Democratic challenger Bill White agree that while plans to build a mosque near Ground Zero have stirred controversy, they don't object to a local decision affirming the Islamic group's right to build it. A New York City planning commission voted this week to clear the way for a planned Islamic community center and mosque near the site of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Perry, who has campaigned on states’ rights and local control, said he would prefer that planners find another site far from Ground Zero. But he supports the right of local citizens to authorize it.

“I’m a big believer in freedom of religion but believe it would be best for all involved to put the facility elsewhere,” Perry said. “However, zoning is a local responsibility and as a staunch supporter of the 10th Amendment, I do not think the federal government should take steps to intercede or overrule the wishes of local residents. The citizens of New York City will decide the fate of this building.”

I can see where dealing with muslims is probably a little delicate at times.

I can understand Perry’s views but I don’t think, maybe I’m wrong but I don’t think Perry sanctions anything like a mosque on Ground Zero.

An Islamic “Victory Mosque” on or near the ashes of 3,000 dead Americans and others, and it’s blah-blah?

He should have dropped everything, flown to New York and chained himself to something until the locals relented.

I know. How very anti-conservative of him to 1. oppose building the obamanation near Ground Zero but 2. recognize the Constitutional limits of the Federal Government. /S

Is that kind of like how he was for gay marriage before he was against it?

Wow, and we used to think FLIP-FLOPPING was bad when Kerry did it.

Now, if the mosque were in the way of his NAFTA superhighway, then he would find a reason to oppose it.

(Yes, this is a place where Perry’s actions and Perry’s words meld.)

What specifically about the article and/or Perry do you think national voters should know? That he believes it's a local issue and not something the feral government should stick its nose in?
