US President Barack Obama warned the US east coast was in for a "long 72 hours" as he led his government's response to Hurricane Irene at a disaster command center in Washington.
Obama on Saturday chaired a meeting at the National Response Coordination Center (NRCC) set up at the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) headquarters in Washington, which is marshaling federal and local hurricane-relief efforts.
"This is going to be a tough slog getting through this thing," Obama said during a video teleconference including senior federal officials and local government agencies in the east coast path of Irene.
"It's going to be a long 72 hours. Obviously a lot of families are going to be affected ... the biggest concern I'm having right now has to do with flooding and power," Obama said during the videoconference.
"(It) sounds like that's going to be an enormous strain on a lot of states" that could last days, or even longer in some cases, he said.
Saturday evening Obama convened a conference call with members of his senior emergency response team including Vice President Joe Biden and Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, among others.
"The President was briefed on the current track of the storm, the weather impacts being felt so far and efforts to pre-position response and recovery assets," said a statement released by the White House.
"The President asked to be kept apprised of developments throughout the night and said that he wants the group to re-convene tomorrow morning."

“Obama takes charge at hurricane command center”
Does anyone besides myself get a vision from this headline of Obama as José Ferre’s Padishah Emperor Shaddam IV at the controls of the rotating war command center in the war pyramid directing legions of Sardakar troops fighting hurricane Irene?
that is always what happens when a man exerts himself, no?
That’s an insult to Jose Ferrer. He had much more gravitas.
Too bad Irene is hitting the East Coast, rather than the Midwest; then he could ignore it.
It seems that flooding and power outages only count with this administration if it inconveniences or damages the Eastern Seaboard, especially the Dem-dominated portions; otherwise Obama might have been more responsive to the major flooding, power outages, and storm damage in flyover country earlier this year.
Sort of similar to his attitude about the 2+ million acres of wildfires in the Southwest, mainly Arizona, Texas & Oklahoma earlier this year. Case in point, see how they blwew off Perry’s request for additional aid.

So he is concerned about power outages for families...Hmmm I have heard that his newly announced EPA regulations will shut down at least 20%+ of the Nation’s power plants...contributing to making the costs as he says: “necessarily skyrocket...”
A poser is always looking for a pose to take. Also “Never let a crisis go to waste.”
One of the posters at Yahoo (”John”) said exactly what I was thinking:
“What is the President of the United States doing taking charge of a hurricane response center? Is the White House staff crazy? These people are loony toons. So does he do windows too? Presidents don’t take charge of hurricane response centers. How much more ridiculous can this Administration get? Propaganda I can believe. But this is totally out to lunch. Are we supposed to believe this demonstrates his leadership ability? It does precisely the opposite. This is something which is supposed to be delegated well be low the level of President of the United States. What’s he going to do next? Take his shirt off and move some rocks bare chested like a Putin? Don’t these people understand such things?”
Thank you, John!
Here’s one I found particularly good:
lol perfect job for Obama...he destroys everything he is in charge of so....let’s put him in charge of hurricanes!!
Zero has an identity crisis. At times he thinks he’s FDR, Lincoln,or Reagan and now he thinks he’s a meteorologist.
The tough slog will end for us in 2012, Barry. And good riddance!
Too true.
When the crunch comes, the last thing these command centers need is some political moron stopping everything so everyone can listen to him tell them how important their work is, or to patiently explain to him (usually with a camera conveniently nearby) something which is unfolding.
Maybe the command center wheeled in a wittle throne for 0 to clamber up on and preside.
What are you gonna do? He can’t get a tee time on any golf course within 300 miles of Washington.
I bet he hops on Air Force One for some “special” event and heads to to the west coast....and goes golfing.
Absolutely right! For a good time, read the yahoo comments.
I’d be surprised if Air Force One takes off in weather like this.
I’d recommend he use a glider or hot air balloon.
