In the wake of recent reports of a joint Israeli-Jordanian plan to link the Red Sea on the Israeli side and the Dead Sea on the Jordanian Side, parliamentarians in Egypt are agitating for the nation's caretaker junta to demand Israel surrender the port-city of Eilat.
Egypt has insisted it has a claim to the city of Eilat since it lost the city to the nascent state of Israel in the wake of the Egyptian army's defeat in Israel's 1948 War of Independence, but after the 1979 Camp David Accords the claim was officially dropped. Or so it seemed.
The reassertion of the claim comes as members of parliament (MPs) in Egypt decry the "Israeli plot to choke the Suez Canal to death."
The control of trade routes has been a principle source of conflict in human history. The 1967 Six-Day War broke out after Egypt closed the straits of Tiran and strangled the trade from Israel's southern port city of Eliat.
In exploring the 'claim,' which has been hotly debated in Egypt's parliament this week, Abed el-Aziz Sayef a-Nasser, an aide to the Egyptian foreign minister, was called as an expert witness. A-Nasser is the director of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry's legal department.
"Eilat, or by its former name Umm Rashrash, belongs to the Palestinians," he said on behalf of the Egyptian Foreign Ministry.
His predecessor, Dr. Nabil el-Arab i, was the head of the Foreign Ministry's legal department and headed the delegation for negotiations at Taba. He also emphatically maintained: "Eilat belongs to the Palestinians."

Egypt is a gutter nation, to paraphrase the Right Reverend Louis Farrakhan.
Of course they want Eilat... Now that it’s filled with luxury hotels, happy tourists, vibrant business and the best SCUBA diving this side of the Great Barrier Reef.
See how they like it when AGAIN it’s another stinking nest of thieving bedouins!
“Egypt has insisted it has a claim to the city of Eilat since it lost the city to the nascent state of Israel in the wake of the Egyptian army’s defeat in Israel’s 1948 War of Independence”
The islamopigs lost it when they tried to destroy Israel the last time. TFB
They also were easily pushed back in 1956, when they nationalized the Suez Canal and denied access to Israel, which then started grabbing ground in the Sinai like it was on sale, until the US persuaded Israel to give it back. They also lost the entire Sinai when they tried blocking access to Eilat in 1967. And they failed to annihilate Israel in 1973, or even take back the Sinai, but in 1978 the US convinced Israel to give the Sinai back, and Egypt to relinquish all claims to Eilat.
If they make another move on Eilat, we should reclaim the Sinai and Ghaza, repopulate Yamit and Gush Katif, and stop listening to the present Cretin In Chief altogether.
I wonder what Lawrence of Arabia will bring our Euro-fondling US elite folks next?
It's as I predicted over 30 years ago. Egypt can take back their "peace", but Israel won't try to take back the land they gave away in the name of this phony peace. The faith that naive liberals have in the good wishes of their mortal enemies is so touching.
BTW, I'd like to ask Obama, if I could, who's leading Egypt these days. That question would be good for a real deer in the headlights look from The One, I'd say.
How long before the Obama Administration demands Israel stop building in Elat?
I think the Jews should just move out. leave the fabulous hotels and all of the wonderful infrastructure because they owe it to the egyptians.....//NOT// In fact, I believe that the Israelis need to reoccupy the Sinai, which belongs to them.
Correct. Enough with the "

Don’t worry, It will be sorted out for them by the G-d of Yisrael.
How long does anyone think it will take Israel to kick their miserable asses again if it came to it?
I give it three to four weeks max.
“How long before the Obama Administration demands Israel stop building in Elat?”
What? He hasn’t done that yet? Must be too busy “taking charge” of Hurricane Irene.

Too long. It has to be over in five days, or it won’t make a good movie. Bad enough it’ll take longer than the Entebbe rescue. You can’t expect people to watch these things forever, can you.
Sure. We don’t really need all that shipping to and from Asia, Australia, East Africa and the Pacific Rim. If only we’d give Egypt Eilat, they’d reopen the Suez Canal to us for the first time since 1956. I can just feel it in my bones—no, that was a cramp. Never mind.
Yes, but first He'll kick them in the teeth again, as He always does before delivering them to the Promised Land.
So if they renew the claim does the US get the billions it wasted on Egypt since then back?
Even more troubling is Israel’s willingness to allow Egypt to remilitarize the eastern Sinai. If we go along with that, then it is time to shut down the Multinational Force and Observers who operate in the Sinai. Then, we should stop paying Egypt the two billion they receive annually. We can then wait for the next Arab-Israel conflict, which won’t be long in coming.
