City braces for Irene's arrival (as a tropical storm, not hurricane...)
NY Postt ^ | 8/27/11 | CANDICE M. GIOVE, DAVID SEIFMAN and WILSON DIZARD

There’s no calm before the storm.

As frenzied New Yorkers emptied grocery stores, grabbed at every last flashlight and evacuated their homes, the MTA shut down its entire transit system in anticipation of Irene walloping the city.

The storm is on track to strike east of the five boroughs by 8 a.m.

Transit workers began the arduous system halt — the first weather-related one in history — at noon. Bus and subway service might not get moving until well into Monday afternoon.

The apocalyptic standstill leaves five million riders without a way around.

So the idiot Bloomberg shuts down NYC for 3 days for a tropical storm?

You would think this the first hurricane in history of man. It’s like out on the west coast, actual heat alerts for the desert-it’s summer, it’s desert, of course it’s hot.

If I remember correctly, Donna, in 1960, was at least as powerful, if not more so, but there were no mass evacuations, and the transit system wasn’t shut down.

The mini Emperor is showing all those New Yorkers who criticized his non respond to the blizzard what happens when he’s angered.

The buses and subways could have been running for the last 5 hours.

the arrogance and flippancy of some freepers about this storm is disgraceful. sure, it’s “only” a 75-90mph storm... STRIKING NEAR-DIRECT BLOWS on up to four major population centers. oh right, liberals live there, so we don’t care... (rolls eyes)

I live in NYC and Irene will be a TROPICAL STORM with 40 mph winds tops in the city when it hits tomorrow.

And Lord Bloomberg shuts down the city and kills the economy for 3 days for a TROPICAL STORM?

Can’t be too careful.

We in D.C. are at this very moment struggling to survive in the drizzle of Irene. My venetian blinds ripple and belly in the leaf-rustling breezes. The twentysomethings in the house across the street are having a boistrous beer bust. Perhaps that qualifies as “mass hysteria”?

If it keeps up, I suppose we’ll all have to start indulging in human sacrifice and training our dogs and cats to “live together”.

What it’s gonna be like when Irene makes it to the Big Apple I can’t imagine. Either way, it looks like certain “urban youth” flash-mobbers will be having a fine old time looting the evacuated neighborhoods.

stormpulse* (updated 5pm) begs to differ, by 30-35mph. also it's hitting at high tide. but what's 75-88% when trying to make a point? I'm so technical.

you don't have to like Bloomberg, but this and the evac were the right call.

* - I used stormpulse to eliminate anyone's questioning the credibility/conflict of interest of the weather channel.

After Katrina, politicians aren’t taking any chances of being blamed for a catastrophe on their watch. Better safe than sorry.

Here in suburban Maryland it has rained all day. That water has to go somewhere. In congested cities - flooding has to be the biggest concern.

The huge area encompassed by this weather system (to include Tropical Storm and Hurricane strength winds) - is not anything to be taken lightly.

Amazing that you remember Donna. I was just a kid when she ripped through and you’re right, NYC didn’t shutdown and neither did any of the counties to the north of the city. Donna affected communities up to 100 mile north of the city.

Hysteria. Irene will be a TROPICAL STORM by the 11pm update tonite. And she won’t hit NYC for another 18 hours and might only be TROPICAL DEPRESSION by then.

sorry, I forgot, you know everything. clearly I’m a moron, if only for attempting to engage the know-it-alls around here in what I’m sure is their area of expertise.

“I live in NYC and Irene will be a TROPICAL STORM with 40 mph winds tops in the city when it hits tomorrow”

How do you know? I live on Long Island, and none of the meterological reports have it downgraded to a tropical storm.

Yes, it is overhyped, but while the wind damage will most likely be minimal, there is probably going to be a massive amount of rain dumped on the area, that along with storm surge make flooding clearly the main threat at this time, nothing to sneeze at.

We had 10-12 inches of rain in one day in NYC a week or so ago and Lord Bloomberg didn’t shut down the city for 3 days.
